The Internet as Mass Medium

Journal of Computer-mediated Communication, 1996

The Internet has become impossible to ignore in the past two years. Even people who do not own a computer and have no opportunity to "surf the net" could not have missed the news stories about the Internet, many of which speculate about its effects on the ever-increasing number of people who are on line. Why, then, have communications researchers, historically concerned with exploring the effects of mass media, nearly ignored the Internet? With 25 million people estimated to be communicating on the Internet, should communication researchers now consider this network of networks' a mass medium? Until recently, mass communications researchers have overlooked not only the Internet but the entire field of computer-mediated communication, staying instead with the traditional forms of broadcast and print media that fit much more conveniently into models for appropriate research topics and theories of mass communication.

Thus the call for a masspersonal communication model, incorporating two dimensions – message personalization and message access exclusivity – explicitly linking mass communication and interpersonal communication.

The Complexities of New Media: Can the ‘Web Media’ Completely Erase Traditional Media from the Communication Industry?

Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies, 2016

Over the years, there has been a popular outcry among investors and operators in the communication industry that the advent of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) will affect the survival and mode of operation of the traditional media, especially newspapers and magazines. Although it is not in doubt that these technologies pose serious challenges to the survival of mainstream media. This has generated controversies as to whether the 'web media' will completely erase or overshadow the conventional media. This and other issues surrounding the convergence of new and mainstream media, is the thrust of this paper. Communication Technologies (ICTs) have impacted on the society in positive and negative dimensions. Auwal (2015a:29) rightly explains this scenario when he writes that, "over the years, the transitional advancement in digital technologies and the increasing number of new media platforms have revolutionized the ways in which people communicate and share information. These technologies have affected the socio-cultural, political and economic structures of the contemporary society."He explains further that, new media emerged as powerful communication and development tools, adding to the potency of mobile telecommunications as drivers of economic and democratic change. New media technologies have significant impacts on organizational, professional and individual reputations. The impacts, more often are evident in the journalism profession, especially in the print industry. According to Ezea, Ozibo and Hassan (2013), the world is changing fast and much of that change is driven by technology. This is no doubt, the power of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) of which the Internet plays a prominent role, not only in terms of the diffusions of innovations, but also in terms of their operations. The Internet is

Internet as a medium

One general reservation should be expressed at the beginning of this paper. Phenomena described below are based rather on specificity of Polish Internet, although this cannot be done without taking into account sub-system character of Internet treated as an element of media communication. The analysis itself is based on the constructivist theory of communication.

HOW HAS THE INTERNET IMPACTED ON THE MEDIA, USING ANY TWO SOCIAL MEDIA AS EXAMPLE

This paper looks at how the internet has impacted on the media with special focus on the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter to produce, disseminate and receive information. To achieve this aim the paper adopted series of media concept from academics such as; Clay Shirky, Futurologist Paul Saffo, Sociologist William Dutton among others The interactive nature of internet is a crucial factor in this study while some believe its role of citizen journalism is unethical in the practice of journalism profession others opined that social media as a fusion of sociology and technology has transformed communication from monologue (one to many) into dialog (many to many) and democratize information distribution process transforming people from content readers into publishers. The paper which adopted the Survey research method to generate secondary data discovered that new media may not necessary bring about the extinction of old media just as television could not exterminate the existence of radio but it is pertinent to say that online journalism through the use of social media has transformed the process of news gathering and dissemination as it delivers real time information with plurality of views and in some cases with video clips and series of pictures to back up stories. Keen says that Web 2.0 revolution has peddled the promise of bringing more truth to more people but every week a new revelation calls into question the accuracy, reliability and trust of the information we received from the internet. Despite the seemingly advantage of the social media, the conventional media is needed to authenticate, analyse and interpret the veracity of online information, this is where conventional media catches up with the internet, overtakes and begins to dominate it.
