Media, Mobility and Citizenship in the Global Capitalism Context: Reflections on the Trajectory of a (original) (raw)

2020, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MEDIA STUDIES

The article reconstructs the trajectory of the Syrian refugee Talal Al-Tinawi in the city of São Paulo, in order to reflect on the possibilities of international migrants to constitute spaces of citizenship, conditioned by the frameworks imposed on the experiences of mobility by three of the pillars that underpin global capitalism: control and criminalization of migration, individualization of the social, and a regime of visibilities anchored in the centrality of media. In theoretical terms, we articulate conceptual notions on capitalism, media, citizenship and migration. The methodology covers mapping and recollection of digital media materials, as well as semi-guided interviews. The results point to negotiations of possible citizenship spaces by Al-Tinawi, within the framework of media narratives that articulate elements related to refugee status, national belonging and social entrepreneurship, for the construction of an ideal, similar, and not threatening immigrant.
