A Critical Discourse Analysis on Climate Change in a Globalized World: The Nexus of Islam and Sustainable Development

The interplay between climate change and society requires the cultivation of deeper insights into the interdisciplinary connections between faith and development. This study seeks to undertake a grounded theory analysis of the Islamic narrative among policy makers about climate change and Islamic values. A focus group panel of key experts was conducted on the topic of sustainability and faith, using a climate policy canvas to gain insights into the role of faith in shaping perceptions and policies to mitigate climate change. The results showed that Islamic values can be in positive interaction with environmental responsibility and ecologically friendly behavior. Despite the divergent narratives between the Global South and North with regard to equity and liability, policy makers are mindful of the ecological imperatives and the need to mainstream ethical values in order to influence climate policy. Sustainability and climate change in major religions with a focus on Islam

Climate change mitigates adaptation and requires not only technical solutions, but also better insights in the understanding of relevant belief and identity systems, in which religion plays an important role. Human attitudes, convictions and ultimately our consumption patterns will play an important role in climate adaptation and mitigation. Religion is a key determinant of individual convictions and a central marker of behaviour and community belonging. The report presents findings from the world’s second largest religion, Islamic, on attitudes and behaviours to climate change in countries around the world. Climate change preparedness in several Muslim dominated countries is relatively low in spite of the fact that some of the countries that will be most affected by climate change are Muslim majority. This report is based on a new survey on Muslim leaders and our assessment of population level datasets around the world focused on attitudes towards climate change.

Recent rise of climate change is a global challenge. It has become the biggest threat to the natural ecosystem of Earth, human life, and future generations. The latest climate reports of international panel on climate (IPCC) indicate that climate variations have sensitized the entire world. Therefore, it is essential to take preventive measures to reduce impact of climate change for protection of living beings and future generations on Earth. Power plants, fossil fuels, greenhouse gases, transportation, industrial revolution, non-renewable energy resources, and deforestation are main reasons of climate changes. Deforestation has augmented imbalance, disorder, global warming, climate change, air pollution and other ecological issues at local, regional and global level. Forests are considered lungs of the ecosystem. Religious ecological principles can play an effective role to eradicate ecological and climate changes. Islam is an eco-friendly religion. Islam provides complete guidance in every walk of life. This research study provides a comprehensive analysis of how Islam guides people in addressing and mitigating the global challenge of climate change. Islamic ecological precautions can play an exquisite role in minimizing impact of climate change on humane life. Global climate changes have affected Pakistan in form of unseasonal heavy rains, extreme flooding and drought. The main objective of this article is to provide an overview of climate change impact and its solutions in the light of Islamic perspectives.

Muhammadiyah’s Response to Climate Change and Environmental Issues: Based on Tarjih National Conference

This paper aims to analyze Islamic dialectics in the Muhammadiyah community for responding to climate change and environmental issues. As one of the institutions in Muhammadiyah, the Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid (MTT) has an important role in bridging environmental issues into the Muslim community. The National Conference Meeting in 2014 and 2015, MTT concerning fatwa about Water Jurisprudence and Disaster Jurisprudence. By the content analysis method, these two fatwas respond to various problems caused by weather changes. The fatwa serves a legal guide for programs and sustainable activities related to environmental issues. The conclusion of the paper made Muhammadiyah has shifted from a theoretical understanding of environmental preservation (Hifz al-Biah) to an active and practical attitude in translating fiqih to the level of real practice.

Reconciling Islamic Ethics, Fossil Fuel Dependence, and Climate Change in the Middle East

The dominance of fossil fuel economies in the Middle East with large Muslim majority populations has led to a recurring question about the role Islamic ethics might play in galvanizing action on climate change. However, the perceived clash of economic values versus environmental norms in Islam deserves more careful examination. This brief article considers the advent of the " Islamic Declaration on Climate Change " which was promulgated in 2015 and considers the tangible steps Muslim government leaders and civil society have taken on this matter. The tangible steps that are being considered with an action plan are discussed in the light of earlier environmental movements within Islam. A brief discussion of environmental norms within Islamic scriptures is also provided to give theological context to this narrative. The establishment of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in the UAE as a treaty-based organization with United Nations affiliations is also considered. The environment can play an important peace-building role in the region as exemplified by organizations such as Eco-peace in Palestine, Israel, and Jordan. Based on the analysis of these developments, it is likely that Muslim countries will continue to play a more proactive role in addressing climate change than they are often given credit for in popular discourse.

Being one of the most global challenges, climate change has been the concern of many international conferences. It is believed that the politicians' perspectives of climate change are different from the scientists' perspectives. This study attempts to fill in this gap through employing the textual and the ideological analyses to investigate the political and the scientific speeches about climate change. It aims at: investigating the textual features of the political and the scientific climate change discourses, examining the ideologies behind the presidents' and the scientists' speeches and shedding light on the differences between the political and the scientific discourse on climate change.
