Influence of Parents and Peer-Group on Choice of Business Education Programme Among Secondary School Students in Zaria Metropolis, Kaduna State

This study investigated the Influence of parents and peer group on choice of business education programme among secondary school students in Zaria metropolis, Kaduna state. The study had four objectives. Four research questions were raised to guide the study while two null hypotheses were formulated and tested. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study was 8865 SS III students that registered for UTME in Zaria metropolis. Three hundred and eighty two students were used as sample for the study. The instrument used to collect information from the respondents was self- structured questionnaire, titled Students Choice of Business Education (SCBE). ASSESSMENT OF BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS' ENROLMENT TREND IN AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY, EKPOMA, EDO STATE

This paper investigated the assessment of business education students' enrolment trend in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. The main purpose of this study was to assess the enrolment trend of Business Education students in A.A.U from 2007/2008 to 2011/2012 academic session. Five research questions were raised to guide the study and three hypotheses were formulated. The case study research design was adopted for this study. The simple random sampling technique was used in drawing up 100 respondents from the population. The questionnaire titled 'Assessment of Business Education Students' Enrolment Trend Questionnaire (ABESETQ)' was used in eliciting information from the students. The instrument was validated by experts and the test-retest method of reliability was adopted in obtaining a coefficient of 0.81. The researchers together with a research assistant administered the instrument. The Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS), Mean, Standard Deviation and ttest statistics were used in analyzing the data. One of the findings is that there is a significant difference between the perceptions of male and female Business Education students as regards factors affecting enrolment trend in A.A.U. A major recommendation made was that there should be conscious government policies aimed at reinforcing and revamping Business education.

Indecision about the choice of subjects as always been a problem among students in Kenya secondary schools when it comes to humanities. With good background, students still need to develop themselves on the subject areas they are keenly interested in and particularly that they have potentiality for and can afford further training. The general aim of this research was to gain a profound appreciative knowledge of the factors influencing the choice of business studies in Kenya’s secondary schools, a case study of public secondary schools in Embu county, Embu North sub-county. The study would be of great significance to the school management because it would help the management community in understanding the factors affecting the choice of business studies. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population for this study was drawn from form three and form four students and teachers. Sample size of 6 teachers and 123 students was drawn from the teachers and the students in form three and four. Primary data was collected by use of a questionnaire. The study generated quantitative data. Quantitative data was coded and entered into Statistical Packages for Social Scientists (SPSS Version 17.0) and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study found that that parents’ advice was key in students’ choice of business studies. There is a high demand for business qualifications in the job market. Students had developed a career path with the help of their mentors through mentorship. The study revealed that the teachers did not influenced the subject choice. The study found out that gender did not influence choice of subject. Students had developed a career path that they strived to achieve/attain in life with regard to their next course of study in the university. The study recommends the schools should continue with career talks while incorporating it with group counselling and all parents to be more involved with their children when they are making choice of their subject.

Making a career choice is a major decision phase in every students’ life. Students have to consider several factors before making a decision as to which programme to pursue at high school. The purpose for the study was to find out the factors (extrinsic and intrinsic) that influence students’ choice of business studies as programme of study in the senior high schools. The study employed descriptive survey design.Using census, 95 students were employed to respond to the survey questionnaire. Data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential (independent t-test) statistics. Evaluation of Business Education Programme in Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria

This study evaluated undergraduate Business Education degree programs of the Faculty of Education, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt. The evaluation research design was adopted for the study. A sample size of 150 respondents was purposively adopted to represent the sample size. The data collection techniques employed in this survey are observation and questionnaire techniques. The instruments were Business Education Programme Evaluation Checklist (BEPEC) and Business Education Objectives Questionnaire (BEOQ). Mean and standard deviation scores were used to answer the research questions, non-parametric statistics (Kruskal Wallis test) to test the normality of the instrument. The results revealed that the objectives for the Business Education undergraduate program at Rivers State University are adequately effective and useful, while the few areas of deficiencies recorded were not in the philosophy and objectives of Business Education, but in the provision of facilities and equipment. It was recommended that the institution should engage the services of experts in educational evaluation to constantly evaluate its undergraduate programs to ensure all components of the programs are updated regularly to meet the required minimum academic standards established by the National Universities Commission. Also, with the proliferation of the latest development of technological hardware and software; the Head of the department should internally source for funds to provide the lacking equipment and facilities for the teaching and learning of Business Education.

BUSINESS EDUCATION IN NIGERIA: ISSUES, CHALLENGES AND WAY FORWARD FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The main aim of this research was to investigate: the challenges facing business education programme; and how the possibilities of overcoming the challenges of business education programme would help in promoting national development. The survey design was adopted for the research. The population consists of 132 business educators' in universities and colleges of education in Edo and Delta States. Two research questions were raised and answered using the mean statistic, while two corresponding hypotheses were formulated and tested using the t-test statistic. A four point scaled questionnaire was used for data collection, validated by two experts and the reliability coefficient using the Cronbach alpha method was 0.82. The results showed that there are challenges facing business education programme. It also showed how the possibilities of overcoming the challenges of business education programme would help in promoting national development. There was no significant difference between the mean ratings of business educators in universities and colleges of education on the challenges facing business education programme, and no significant difference between the mean ratings of male and female business educators on how possibilities of overcoming the challenges facing business education programme would help in promoting national development. Logical conclusion was drawn based on these findings. It was recommended, among others, that government and other major stakeholders should invest their resources (financially and otherwise) to ensure the possibilities of overcoming the challenges facing business education for national development.

This paper focused on the societal perception of Business Education graduates in Nigeria. Business Education programme is purposely designed to produce competent, knowledgeable, skilful and efficient workforce who can favourably compete with the dynamics of work environment and also become self-reliant. However, most Business Education graduates in Nigeria are not well recognised by the society because of their negative perception towards Business Education as a course of study. The study thus recommended among others that Business Education curriculum should be made more relevant, updated and tailored towards the development of graduates' entrepreneurial and employability skills, government should make the programme more lucrative and highly prestigious, teaching and learning should be redirected from theoretical to practical as this will make graduates of the programme more capable to perform wherever they find themselves and there should be serious public enlightenment on the relevance and prospects of Business Education in Nigeria.

ANALYSIS OF THE RATIONALES FOR STUDENTS’ NEGATIVE ATTITUDES TOWARDS BUSINESS EDUCATION PROGRAMME OF TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN DELTA STATE

The study analyzed the rationales for students' negative attitudes towards business education programme of tertiary institutions in Delta State. Four research questions were answered and four null hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The survey design research design was employed in the study. The population consisted of 1,885 Business Education students in five tertiary institutions in Delta State, in the 2023/2024 academic session. Twenty percent (20%) of the population which is 377 was used as the sample size, applying the systematic random sampling technique. The research instrument used in this study was the closed format questionnaire structured on a four-point Likert scale, consisting of section A with four (4) items dealing with the biographic data of the Students and section B with twenty (20) items dealing with the research questions and hypotheses. The Cronbach Alpha Reliability Test (CART) technique was adopted in establishing the reliability of the Instrument yielding a coefficient of 0.91. Mean was used to answer the raised research questions and T-test statistics was used in analyzing the formulated hypotheses. The findings revealed that; public perception, lack of workshop machines and equipment, content skills training, lack of infrastructural facilities, and non-functional libraries were rationales for students’ negative attitudes towards business education programme of tertiary institutions in Delta State. Hence, it was recommended that, there should be proper public enlightenment and education on what business education is all about. This will correct the negative attitude concerning the programme as an all-comer programme which is designed to accommodate the never-do-well, a programme for the other person’s child, a programme for those not having the brain power for vigorous academic demands, a somewhat inferior type of education, etc. Keywords: Rationales, Students Negative Attitude, Business Education

Business Studies Academic Performance Differences of Secondary School Juniors in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria

The research examined the differences in the academic performance in Business Studies of a sampled secondary school junior students in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. A sample of 290 (138 male and 152 female) Junior Secondary Three (9 th grade) students was surveyed. The students' variables' being examined vis-à-vis academic performance in Business Studies were: 1) gender and 2) self-concept. Students' academic performance in Business Studies differed significantly on the basis of gender and self-concept. Implications for students' personal variables considerations in the teaching-learning of Business Studies are suggested.
