Analysis of electric conduction mechanisms in polyethylene terephthalate
Materials Letters, 1998
The isothermal current-voltage measurements on insulating materials can be improved by using a symmetric triangular signal. The measured current is field dependent and the Richardson-Schottky, the Fowler-Nordheim, the Poole-Frenkel, Ohm, space charge limited current and ionic current mechanisms can be used for the interpretation of the results. The experimental data can fit with two or more from the presented mechanisms. In deciding which is the best mechanism, it is necessary to use a second condition. We propose to use the slope of the Richardson-Schottky and the Poole-Frenkel plots to calculate the dielectric permittivity of the sample. For high fields the work function can be determined from the Fowler-Nordheim plot and can be used as a control parameter. Polyethylene terephthalate was used as standard material to Ž y1 y1 . test the validity of these models under moderate electric fields 0.5 MV m -E -20 MV m . For low fields Ohm's law describes the current flow. The Richardson-Schottky law is adequate only for a small field range. The Poole-Frenkel law fits best the experimental data. For high fields the Fowler-Nordheim law fits as well the experimental results. The charge accumulated in the sample strongly influences the measured current. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
Electrical properties of polymers
2005
Fully revised and expanded, this new edition of Anthony Blythe's successful title on electrical properties of polymers covers both the fundamental and recent developments in this growing area. The book provides a broad and comprehensive account of the topic, describing underlying physical principles and synthesis through to emerging technologies. The second edition places particular emphasis on the new generation of conductive polymers, describing emerging uses of polymers in industrial applications and covering topics such as light emitting diodes, flexible polymers and soft electronics.

Properties and Applications of Polymer Dielectrics, 2017
In this chapter, a comprehensive study on the general structure of polymers, their properties and applications has been carried out. In particular, the application of polymers for insulating high-voltage (HV) equipment has been reported, together with the effect of electric field when they are subjected to HV stress. Experimental results related to the effect of partial discharge (PD) on polymeric insulations have been reported and discussed. Practical implications of the results have been discussed, and recommendations are made for future improvement. It is important to obtain new information regarding novel polymeric materials such as nano-polymers that can possibly outperform the currently used ones. It is also vital to investigate the right information for electrical equipment, i.e. by using the appropriate polymer as solid insulation, minimizing the presence of any metallic sharp object and any other conducting path during manufacture in order to avoid any type of internal or external PD.
ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYMERS (1)
The processability and film-forming properties of the conjugated polymers are crucial for the fabrication of high-performance photoluminescence emitting diodes (PLEDs) and polymer solar cells (PSCs). However, conjugated polymers of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), polytheiophene (PT), polypropylene (PPP), etc. without substituted side chains are insoluble and infusible, which limits their application.

A blend of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5diyl) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl C 61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is popularly used as an active medium in polymeric solar devices. According to the most recent understanding, the blend is a threephase system contrary to its earlier understanding of two-phase bicontinuous network. We have synthesized a P3HT-PCBM based layered heterostructure system by spin coating and thermal vacuum evaporations. Current density (J) was measured as a function of applied electric field (E) across the system bound between two metal electrodes. J-E relations were analyzed into the backdrop of space charge limited current model and Schottky model. The later was used to predict dc-dielectric constants from the linear slopes of ln (J) versus E 1/2. The curves were not monotonously linear, but observe a knee-bend separating into two linear segments for each curve. Thermal annealing from 40°C to 80°C was used as an activation tool for driving changes in the internal morphology via inter-diffusion of polymers and current measurements were performed at room temperature after each annealing. At the last stage of annealing the two linear slopes were highly distinct. The presence of sharp knee-bend results in approximately 20 times jump in dielectric constant as a function of electric field. Such high jumps in dielectric constant illustrate the potential for switching applications and charge storage. The high dielectric constants can be understood in terms of space charge polarization due to isolated domains which hindrance to charge transport. The high dielectric constants were confirmed by another experiment of capacitance measurements of a different set of similar samples. A study of thermal evolution of internal morphology was also carried out using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques to correlate the morphological changes with the transport properties.
Physico-chemical factors conditioning the electronic conduction of conductive polymers
2021
The driving idea and the main objective of this synthetic work is the study of physicochemical factors such as the dielectric constant of the solvent, the polarizability of the chains and the Gap energy of the conductive polymers, these characteristics condition their properties. electrical and electrochemical. We focused our study on polyaniline, two synthetic methods are presented: chemical polymerization and electropolymerization with emphasis on the theoretical aspects of the phenomena involved as well as on the electrochemical methods used such as cyclic voltammetry. We have therefore developed with maximum clarity the links existing between the physico-chemical properties of polyaniline and its electrical conductivity.
