Mechanistic approach to generalized technical analysis of share prices and stock market indices
2002
Classical technical analysis methods of stock evolution are recalled, i.e. the notion of moving averages and momentum indicators. The moving averages lead to define death and gold crosses, resistance and support lines. Momentum indicators lead the price trend, thus give signals before the price trend turns over. The classical technical analysis investment strategy is thereby sketched. Next, we present a generalization of these tricks drawing on physical principles, i.e. taking into account not only the price of a stock but also the volume of transactions. The latter becomes a time dependent generalized mass. The notion of pressure, acceleration and force are deduced. A generalized (kinetic) energy is easily defined. It is understood that the momentum indicators take into account the sign of the fluctuations, while the energy is geared toward the absolute value of the fluctuations. They have different patterns which are checked by searching for the crossing points of their respective moving averages. The case of IBM evolution over 1990-2000 is used for illustrations.
Technical Analysis - a Paranormal Phenomenon
international journal of research in computer application & management, 2011
Do not save, but invest is the rational counsel as investments may bring better returns. We all consume less than our income to save and want to be in a position to invest in physical (Land, Gold) and financial (Equity, Debt & Derivatives) assets available for investment. To invest in share market is an exciting roller coaster journey. It involves crucial decisions involving, which shares to be included in portfolio, when to buy and sell. Two most commonly used tools to diagnose and decide are fundamental analysis and technical analysis. Fundamental analysis involves analysing the characteristics of a company in order to estimate its value. Technical analysis takes a completely different approach; it doesn't care about the "value" of a company or a commodity. Technicians/Chartists are only interested in the price movements in the market. Various tools and theories of technical analysis are used to determine the price patterns. Most of them seem illogical but still they work and portfolio managers and professionals of security market use them to make money. This paper is an earnest effort to determine how such a paranormal phenomenon of technical analysis works.
The paper presents findings of Indian adoption of technical and fundamental analysis of Chartist Methods. These findings have some practical implications. First, as professional traders do not trade purely on the basis of the economic fundamentals, but also take into account market movements generated by other factors (noise trading), knowledge of technical analysis is important to anyone who would like to participate successfully in the stock market. Second, the existence of a skew towards reliance on fundamental analysis at longer horizons suggests that models based on economic considerations will be more important on the long run. Third, the existence of a skew towards reliance on technical analysis at shorter horizons suggests that models based on short term considerations (noise) will be more important in the short term. Fourth, results have also identified a group of strikingly dissimilar forecasting styles representing different forecasting patterns across the various time periods examined. This emerging typology of forecasting practitioners in stock market indicates that technical forecasting methods are widely used by fundamentalists also. Fifth, the identification of most commonly used chartist methods and services and valuation techniques would help the stock market participants know the popular evaluation techniques. Sixth, stock market investors need to note that there is no significant association between demographic variables of brokers and the usage of technical and fundamental techniques.

Ranking and Managing Stocks in the Stock Market Using Fundamental and Technical Analyses
International Journal of Economics and Management Studies, 2015
The stock selection problem is one of the major iss ues in the investment industry, which is mainly solved by analyzing financial ratios. However, cons idering the complexity and imprecise patterns of the stock market, obvious and easy-to-understand in vestment rules, based on fundamental analysis, are difficult to obtain. Fundamental and technical analyses are two common methods for predicting the future behavior of the stock.Fundamental analys is focuses on the economic forces of supply and demand which cause stock prices change. On the other hand technical analysis examines historical data relating to changes in the price and trading v olume by using graphs and indicators as a primary tool to predict future price movements. Therefore, in this paper, a model has been proposed for selection of the right portfolio in stock exchange. Financial industries ranking and companies ranking have been applied for selection of the righ t stock in this model. These rankings have been done thro...
