Changing perspectives of the role of community pharmacists: 1998 – 2012

Journal of Primary Health Care, 2017

INTRODUCTION In New Zealand, extended medicines management roles proposed for pharmacists include the optimisation and monitoring of medicines in patients with long-term conditions through greater collaboration with general practitioners (GPs). Although some collaborative roles have been successfully implemented in hospitals, barriers for both pharmacists and GPs hinder interprofessional working relationships in the community. AIM To compare data from a 2012 study with two previous studies (1998, 2002) examining perceptions of community pharmacists and GPs of the expanding medicines management roles of community pharmacists. METHODS In 2012, a survey, modelled on the 1998 and 2002 studies, was sent to 600 community pharmacists and 600 GPs. Analyses considered the five-point Likert scale to be a continuous variable. A change of ≥ 10% between any two surveys indicated a relevant change for comparison. RESULTS Increasing agreement, which differed considerably between professions, was a...

General practitioners' and pharmacists' perceptions of the role of community pharmacists in delivering clinical services

Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy, 2009

Background: Because community pharmacists are encouraged to provide clinical services, there is a need to determine the role perceptions of both community pharmacists and general practitioners (primary care physicians). Differing role perceptions are likely to result in barriers to pharmacists expanding their roles in health care. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether community pharmacists' and general practitioner's perceptions of the role of community pharmacists may be a barrier to pharmacists increasing their role in medication management. Other potential barriers were also explored that could provide a framework for future research. Methods: A postal survey to 900 and 1000 randomly selected community pharmacists and general practitioners, respectively, elicited the perceptions of these groups toward the role of community pharmacists. Likert scales were used to quantify the results. Results: The results revealed a gap in perceptions regarding the role of the community pharmacist, with general acceptance of the technical roles but less acceptance of clinical roles by general practitioners. Barriers to increased involvement of community pharmacists in clinical services included a perceived lack of mandate, legitimacy, adequacy, and effectiveness by both groups. Also observed was a lack of readiness to change by community pharmacists. Conclusions: This study suggests that there are significant barriers to community pharmacists increasing clinical services, both from the community pharmacists themselves and from the general practitioners. Attention to change management in a complex environment will be necessary if community pharmacists are to change their role toward more clinical services.

From "retailers" to health care providers: Transforming the role of community pharmacists in chronic disease management

Health policy (Amsterdam, Netherlands), 2015

Community pharmacists are the third largest healthcare professional group in the world after physicians and nurses. Despite their considerable training, community pharmacists are the only health professionals who are not primarily rewarded for delivering health care and hence are under-utilized as public health professionals. An emerging consensus among academics, professional organizations, and policymakers is that community pharmacists, who work outside of hospital settings, should adopt an expanded role in order to contribute to the safe, effective, and efficient use of drugs-particularly when caring for people with multiple chronic conditions. Community pharmacists could help to improve health by reducing drug-related adverse events and promoting better medication adherence, which in turn may help in reducing unnecessary provider visits, hospitalizations, and readmissions while strengthening integrated primary care delivery across the health system. This paper reviews recent str...

Pharmacy and Society: How Effective Communication Can Strengthen the Role of Community Pharmacist

2019

Ever since pharmacy has become a profession, pharmacist's role has been continuously subjected to changes due to specific influences from historical, socio-economic, political, and scientific context. Nowadays the classic perception of pharmaceutical profession in Community Pharmacy is facing worldwide extinction due to many factors. Modern services, such as online, mail-order, and telephone-order pharmacies are increasingly gaining ground thanks to their ability to facilitate customer demand. However, at the same time, they are endangering “face-to-face” contact, affecting the building of customer loyalty based on direct “human” interaction, and consequently reducing pharmacists to mere commercial figures. Communication is in fact emphasized as the essential element to build a solid and appropriate interpersonal relationship with the client, to make the consultancy process effective, and to strengthen pharmacist's professionalism in community pharmacy.
