Process parameter definition with respect to the behaviour of complex kinematic machine tools
The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2013
The definition of machining processes with respect to complex kinematic machine tool behaviour involves the control of machine accuracy and kinematic performances. The aim is to propose process settings and tool paths which guarantee the required machining quality while maximizing productivity. This article presents an experimental protocol which enables the determination of machine tool structure behaviours which have an influence on machining quality. In parallel, an experimental analysis of the different kinds of settings which can improve machining quality is carried out. Two kinds of settings appear: the first class of settings improves machining quality or machining time, and the second class has an antagonistic influence on machining quality and machining time. Thus, the definition of the second class of settings arises from an optimisation between first-order defects, second-order defects and machining time. The developed method is illustrated on a parallel kinematic machine tool, the Tripteor X7. Note that this study is a first step towards controlling machine tool behaviour during machining.

A main limitation of parallel kinematics machine tools in machining tasks is their accuracy low level largely due to geometrical transformation errors. These errors appear due to the difference between the behaviour of the inverse kinematics model integrated into the controller and that of the real PKM. The aim of this paper is to analyse the influence of the controller IKM on PKM machining behaviour and to quantify its incidence on the assembly and machining tolerances of structural elements.

The main topic refers to enhancing the machining accuracy by minimizing the path error while machining through linear, circular or other interpolations on CNC machines for milling, boring and milling, grinding or turning. Currently the path error minimizing process while machining on CNC machine tools is a little explored, because of the absence of the dependence relations between the path error and the parameters of the kinematical axes taking part to the interpolation of the work piece contour. This work establishes and analyzes the relations of dependence between the path error and the response times of the kinematical axes that take part to the linear and circular interpolation. The theoretical results are experimentally verified by performing several machining operations through circular interpolation, where the moving speed along the contour and the response times of the kinematical axes are modified. The results of this research are intended for the machine tool designers and those who use such machines.

The paper concerns an analysis regarding geometry of a grinding wheel used in grinding of cylindrical worm threads characterized by various geometry. It presents geometrical and physical factors having impact on the dressing process and quality of the grinding wheel. In particular, an attention is paid on the accuracy of a grinding wheel's outline if it is approximated by linear interpolation line segments which are obtained in the case of dressing on a CNC machine tool. On the basis of two grinding wheel outlines (Archimedes and circular-arched one), the relevance of the length of the segment line on the geometrical accuracy of wheel's outline has been presented. In the case of development of a wheel dresser path on the CNC machine tool, the necessity of a customized approach has also been indicated.
Linear motion analysis for a novel 4-DOF parallel kinematic machine
Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering
Motion accuracy is significantly influenced by nonlinear behavior of parallel mechanisms. In this paper, an interpolation algorithm suitable for linear motions of a novel 4-DOF parallel kinematic machine is developed. In this interpolation scheme, velocity and orientation deviations are realized along with path nonlinearity of mechanism. Simulations showed that this algorithm has the capability of sustaining the kinematical constraints and maintaining the nonlinear error below the specified tolerances. Furthermore, to evaluate the linear motion capability of presented 4-DOF parallel mechanism, two digital data loggers recorded the nonlinear error during motion of end effector with pre-defined paths having various lengths and locations in workspace. Results indicated that the developed algorithm based on reducing the kinematic nonlinearity produces more accurate motions.
Survey of the Dominant Error Types at Parallel Kinematics Machine Tools
2010
Theoretically parallel kinematics machine tools should be very accurate and rigid due to their closed loop structure and no error accumulation characteristics. Unfortunately, these theoretical presumptions have not been confirmed in practice. This paper gives a survey of the types of errors which significantly decrees the expected accuracy of the parallel kinematics machine tools.

Abstract: This paper addresses the workspace analysis of two 3-DOF translational parallel mechanisms designed for machining applications. The two machines features three fixed linear joints. The joint axes of the first machine are orthogonal whereas these of the second are parallel. In both cases, the mobile platform moves in the Cartesian $ xyz $ space with fixed orientation. The workspace analysis is conducted on the basis of prescribed kinetostatic performances. Interval analysis based methods are used to compute the ...
Sensitivity analysis of parallel manipulators using an interval linearization method
Mechanism and Machine Theory, 2014
The subject of this paper is about an interval linearization method for the sensitivity analysis of manipulators to variations in their geometric parameters. First, the proposed method is presented. Then, three manipulators are used as illustrative examples: The five-bar mechanism, the 3-RRR planar parallel manipulator and the Orthoglide. The benefits and restrictions of the proposed method are also discussed and appropriate indices are derived to show the efficiency of the method. The obtained results are also compared with the results obtained with frequently used methods. The proposed method is simple to implement and provides verified results in low computational time and thus can be applied to complex robots such as the Orthoglide. In particular, the standard linearization method computes unreliable results near singularities, whereas the proposed interval linearization method automatically detects such situations.
Calibrate Parallel Machine Tools by Using Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Interpolation Method
This paper is an extended research of our previous study, in which only tpe-1 fuzzy system was discussed, for a novel technique used in the pose error compensations for parallel machine tools calibration process based on an Interval Type-2 Fuzzy error interpolation (IT2FEI) method. Robot calibrations can be classified into model-based and modeless methods. Either inverse or forward kinematic models need to be used in the traditional calibration methods to perform the identification and compensation of the pose errors for parallel machine tools. Instead of using a model, the proposed method presents a modeless technique combined with an interval type-2 fuzzy interpolation method to obtain the same or higher calibration accuracy when a small workspace is adopted. Simulated results show that not only the robot compensation accuracy can be improved, but also the calibration process can be significantly simplified, and it is more suitable for practical applications.

By taking a 3-DOF translational milling machine as an example, this paper investigates the kinematic calibration of PKM systems with fewer than 6-DOF. The error mapping function is formulated in such a way that the geometric errors affecting the compensatable and uncompensatable pose errors can be separated. Based upon the previous investigation, a hierarchical approach to the geometric error identification is proposed. The compensation strategy is developed which is particularly suitable for the PKM systems with translational moving capability. The experiment has been carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the results show that the accuracy can be significantly improved.
