The present study investigates long-term changes in climate aridity in association with urbanization, industrial development and the use of land in Thriasio plain, Greece. Resident population and established activities increased rapidly in Thriasio although with a growth rate varying among municipalities. Nonlinear regressions were run to estimate the growth of economic activities on a local scale. Meteorological indexes showed a trend towards warmer and drier climate consistent with the intense process of urbanization and industrialization observed on a local scale. Our results indicate the urgent need for measures mitigating climate aridity in mixed urban-rural landscapes surrounding large Mediterranean cities.

Changes in aridity, especially to more arid classes, can have a strong impact on vegetation development in urban environments affecting also the inhabitants’ health and quality of life. In this work, water related parameters (i.e. Potential evapotranspiration PET, water deficit D and surplus S) and aridity index AI were examined according to Thornthwaite's approach, in the city of Heraklion – Crete in Greece during the period 1955-2017. The decadal analysis of seven decades (1950s to 2010s) indicates that S remains negligible, however PET and D have increased values varying from 938mm in 1980s to 1007mm in 2010s for PET and from 396mm in 1960s to 568mm in 2010s for D, whereas precipitation has decreased presenting maximum in 1960s (579mm) and minimum in 2010s (422mm). Therefore, the recent decade (2010s) is more arid compared to the past, displaying the lowest AI value (0.42). During the previous decades, AI was much higher with values between 0.60 in 1960s and 0.44 in 1990s, in...
Relative Humidity and Land Use Changes in an Environmentally Stressed Area (Thriasio Plain – Greece)
Procedia Technology, 2013
In this paper an attempt is made to conjunct the meteorological parameter of Relative Humidity with Established Activities and land use changes we in an environmentally stressed area in Thriasio Plain -Greece. For this purpose relative humidity data from 1958 to 2011 was used. In order to examine the growth of the number of established activities over time and the consequent change in land use a Verhulst equation model and two simple regration models were used. Models results for established activities in the area are marked by a continuous growth, though the rate varies among the different local authorities. In addition, what appears to have played a significant part in the evolution of activities and residential zones of the area is the land surface available in each one of the local authorities.
Integrated analysis and mapping of aridity over Greek areas with different climate conditions
Assessment of aridity conditions prevailing in a certain area is essential for the research on climate and climate change. Greece is characterized by a variety of climatic conditions such as drought conditions or flooding phenomena. The current study focuses on three selected areas within Greece that present different climatic characteristics due to their location and aims to analyze and compare the aridity conditions prevailing in these areas. Aridity conditions were estimated using the Aridity Index (AI). Mann-Kendall test was applied to investigate possible trends. Spatial distribution of aridity conditions was performed using multi-linear regression techniques and Kriging method within ArcGIS 10.2.1. The results indicated that the study areas face humid conditions, mostly due to the existence of high altitudes. Furthermore, the various climatic conditions are responsible for differentiations in seasonal analysis regarding the aridity conditions. The study areas related to the Mediterranean climate resulted more heterogeneous conditions compared with areas affected by the continental climate. Nevertheless, the created aridity spatial maps of trend analysis presented with differentiations, especially in the mountainous areas were an extreme downward trend is appeared. For the southern investigated area in Crete Island characterized purely by Mediterranean climate, the results were more moderate in terms of aridity conditions.
Sustainability
One of the biggest challenges of our time is climate change. Every day, at different places of the world, the planet sends alarming messages about the enormous transformations it is experiencing due to human-based activities. The latter are responsible for changing weather patterns that threaten food production, energy production and energy consumption, the desertification of land, the displacement of people and animals because of food and water shortages due to the reductions in rainfall, natural disasters and rising sea levels. The effects of climate change affect us all, and if drastic measures are not considered in a timely manner, it will be more difficult and costly to adapt to the aforementioned effects in the future. Considering this context, the aim of this work is to implement a prospective study/structural analysis to the identified sectors of a regional plan of adaptation to climate change so as to promote the resilience of the region against the negative phenomena gener...
Land use patterns and climate change—a modeled scenario of the Late Bronze Age in Southern Greece
Environmental Research Letters, 2020
In this study, we present a modeling approach that investigates how much cultivable land was required to supply a society and whether societies were in need when environmental conditions deteriorated. The approach is implemented for the NorthEastern Peloponnese and is based upon the location of Late Helladic IIIB (1300-1200 BCE) archaeological sites, an assessment of their sizes, and a proposed diet of the people. Based on these information, the areal requirement of each site is calculated and mapped. The results show that large sites do not have sufficient space in their surroundings in order to supply themselves with the required food resources and thus they depended on supplies from the hinterland. Dry climatic conditions aggravate the situation. This indicates that potential societal crisis are less a factor of changing environmental conditions or a shortage of arable land but primarily caused by socioeconomic factors.
Drought Variability Over Thessaly Plain, Greece. Present and Future Changes
The diachronic variability of precipitation is of major scientific concern, because it is linked to water availability or deficiency on regional scale. The latter, resulted from a prolonged period of abnormally low precipitation or permanent absence of precipitation, is associated with dryness, having on one hand, a substantial impact on agricultural production and thus the society itself, and on the other hand, the redistribution of flora and fauna. In some cases, dryness drive climate refugees, and this is a great challenge - threat - that must be faced – mitigated - by stake holders in international organizations and fora. The Aridity Index (AI) measures the degree of dryness of the climate at a given region, and according to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) it is defined as the ratio of precipitation to the potential evapotranspiration. In this study, we investigate the climate change impacts on AI over Thessaly plain, Greece. Thessaly, the largest plain and gra...
Ecosystems and land use changes in Thriassio Plain – Greece: Current situation and perspectives
The natural ecosystems of an area (fauna and flora) can play a vital part in combating problems resulting from modern development, whether this is related to industrialization, or to the expansion of the urban network. However, at the same time, the natural ecosystems bear the resulting pressure and environmental degradation. The present study focuses on natural ecosystems existing within the environmentally degraded area of Thriassion Plain, as well as on their prospects, as these are outlined from the implementation of the general urban planning up to now. For this purpose are used all available data regarding fauna and flora of the area and also data adopted from Corine Land Cover -European Environmental Agency regarding the kind of land uses of the area. Also were used Landsat satellite images, adopted from GLOVIS and a time series of NDVI images was made, covering the 1972 to 2010 time period. The full conclusions drawn can be briefly summarized as following: ecosystems of the area are systematically degrading. Despite the fact that they could have a stabilizing role in the deterioration of the natural environment and above all the atmosphere of the area, ecosystems are systematically degraded and destroyed. Moreover, safeguarding natural ecosystems could act as a protective shield of the area against natural disasters, such as floods. Finally, the study provides some general proposals and guidelines in relation to measures that need to be taken for the protection of natural ecosystems of the Thriassion Plain area.
Climate Aridity and Land Use Changes: A Regional-Scale Analysis
Geographical Research, 2012
In recent years, aridity and drought have become crucial issues at the global scale because of their environmental and socio-economic implications. On the one hand, aridity causes a reduction in the biological and economic productivity of terrestrial ecosystems, and represents a serious threat to ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrological processes. On the other hand, human use (and abuse) of vulnerable dry land ecosystems may lead to unsustainable land management. Based on these considerations, this paper analyses the recent land cover changes observed in Latium (Italy) during the exceptionally dry period 2000-2007. More than 50% of the area investigated was classified as dry in 2004-2007 compared with 0% in 2000-2003. Moreover, climatic aridity impacted differently on seminatural, agricultural, and built-up land. These findings illustrate a possible scenario for suburban Mediterranean regions: increasing aridity (mainly due to rising temperatures) mainly impacting on peri-urban land.

Agricultural landscapes illustrate the impact of human actions on physical settings, and differential human pressures cause these landscapes to change with time. Our study explored changes in the terraced landscapes of Nisyros Island, Greece, focusing on the socioeconomic aspects during two time periods using field data, cadastral research, local documents, and published literature, as well as surveys of the islanders. Population increases during the late 19th to early 20th centuries marked a significant escalation of terrace and dry stone wall construction, which facilitated cultivation on 58.4% of the island. By the mid-20th century, the economic collapse of agricultural activities and consequent emigration caused the abandonment of cultivated land and traditional management practices, dramatically reducing farm and field numbers. Terrace abandonment continued in recent decades, with increased livestock grazing becoming the main land management tool; as a result, both farm and pasture sizes increased. Neglect and changing land use has led to deterioration and destruction of many terraces on the island. We discuss the socioeconomic and political backgrounds responsible for the land-use change before World War II (annexation of Nisyros Island by the Ottoman Empire, Italy, and Greece; overseas migration opportunities; and world transportation changes) and after the war (social changes in peasant societies; worldwide changes in agricultural production practices). The adverse landscape changes documented for Nisyros Island appear to be inevitable for modern Mediterranean rural societies, including those on other islands in this region. The island’s unique terraced landscapes may qualify Nisyros to become an archive or repository of old agricultural management techniques to be used by future generations and a living resource for sustainable management.
