Stratigraphy and Chronology of the Fossiliferous Layers from Križna jama (Slovenia)
2014
All fossil remains originate from layers, which are dominated by fluviatile rearranging of the sediments, i.e. they are allochthonous. The cave bear remains from Križna jama are dated by means of 14C-dating to ages between 47 and 32 ka BP. There were also charcoal remains found and dated, showing that fluviatile transport of sediments took also place in historic times.
Recent developments in archaeozoological research in Slovenia
1999
Abstract This paper is a concise summary of archaeozoological research carried out by the author in Slovenia. Selected research results are used to illustrate some of the archaeological problems that can be elucidated on the basis of animal remains. Rather than providing a diachronic evaluation, special topics were selected that are best represented by the great variety of sites analyzed. The importance of multidisciplinary research is emphasized.
Geologija
This study presents the results of the first systematic morphostratigraphic and provenance analyses of the Pliocene-Quaternary fluvial sediments in the Celje and Drava-Ptuj intramontane basins. Based on the degree of terrace preservation, the dip of the terrace surfaces and fans, and the composition and degree of weathering of the sediments, low-, middle-and high-level terrace groups were constrained and tentatively attributed to Late Pleistocene, Middle Pleistocene and Plio-Early Pleistocene, respectively. The provenance analysis focused on the sediments from the high-level terrace (Plio-Early Pleistocene) and encompassed clast lithological analysis and microfacies analysis of the clasts. The results indicate a local provenance with relatively short transport, which is consistent with the morphology of the clasts. The source rocks of the Plio-Early Pleistocene deposits in the Celje Basin are attributed to the formations outcropping in the southern Pohorje Massif and the Upper Savinja River Valley corresponding to the paleo-Savinja. The possibility of resedimentation of the clasts from Miocene clastic sedimentary rocks located north of the Celje Basin also needs to be considered. The sediments of the Drava-Ptuj Basin originate from the Pohorje Massif, the Kozjak mountain range, and the area south of the Pohorje Massif which were deposited by the paleo-Drava and paleo-Dravinja rivers. Our study indicates that the drainage systems of the paleo-Savinja, paleo-Drava and paleo-Dravinja during the Plio-Early Pleistocene roughly correspond to those of the present day.
Opuscula Archaeologica Radovi Arheološkog zavoda, Vol.28 No.1, 2004
This work briefly outlines the results of field work on the island of Palagruža conducted in September 2003 which was a resumption of works that commenced in 1996 and 2002. There are descriptions of the fragment of a ceramic strainer from the early Neolithic period found at Jonkova njiva, Late Roman architecture (“fortification”) discovered in front of the Church of St. Michael, and numerous finds, particularly of Greek and Hellenistic pottery, on the southern slope, which also confirms the existence of a Diomedes sanctuary on Palagruža. Georadar remote sensing has shown that there are older architectural remains under the stone pavement used to collect rainwater. Signs in three languages have been posted to caution visitors of the importance of their preservation. Works have also commenced on the project to landscape Salamandrija and set up an archeological collection in the lighthouse.
Palaeobotany in Slovene Archaeology
Arheoloski Vestnik, 1999
