The Adventure of A Mecmua (Miscellany): On the Mecmua of Şahidi (Versified Dictionary) Numbered Süleymaniye 876 in the Süleymaniye Library ABSTRACT One of the sources which provide data to lexicography studies is versified dictionaries written to teach foreign vocabulary and prosody to Ottoman children. There have been many studies on versified dictionaries, which had an important place in classical Turkish literature, and prominent examples of the genre published by the researchers so far. Nevertheless, libraries contain many mecmuas (miscellanies) comprised of versified dictionaries compiled in various languages by different poets in different periods. These mecmuas, which have not yet been well studied, are important in that they point to versified dictionaries commonly used in educational activities, in other words, well read/popular dictionaries. In this article, I will introduce in detail a mecmua located in Süleymaniye Library, numbered Süleymaniye 876. This mecmua which consists of 165 folios is entitled Şahidi Mecmuası and comprises different versified dictionaries/mecmuas written by different scribes at different times. Of the ten dictionaries compiled in the mecmua, two are Arabic-Turkish, five are Persian-Turkish and three are Arabic-Persian. Two of the Arabic-Persian dictionaries are Nisabü’s-Sıbyan and its interlinear translations. As with some other mecmuas, parts of Halimi’s dictionary are collated as separate dictionaries. There are some errors with the compilation of the mecmua and some folios are missing.
