Writing to Read and Relate (W2R) implicitly tested the use of writing as a tool for teaching historical empathy, and for providing African American students at a high-poverty urban school with culturally responsive instruction. W2R lead to enhanced knowledge, and improved topicreferenced interest and motivation (volition) as compared to students assigned to a Traditional Comprehension (TC) tutoring control condition. Results from this study show that these students-even students identified as weaker, "Basic" readers-may learn from and find relevance in difficult historical texts when supported to write about these texts vis-à-vis their own lives.
Numerous research studies have investigated the racist undertones of traditional history textbooks of the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth century. Few studies, however, have thoroughly and theoretically explored how African American history textbooks and African American educators have responded to these racist textbooks. Utilizing the theory of revisionist ontology, this study sought to fill this gap by examining Lelia Amos Pendleton's history textbook, A Narrative of the Negro. This article explicates Pendleton's approach to historical writing and argues that her approach went beyond typical contributionist approaches to narration. It provides an example of a written account of history that reinvented African American personhood.

One of the major pedagogical challenges, for teachers at all levels and in all disciplines of the education system, is to acknowledge Africa's presence in the evolution of world civilizations. Knowledge about the existence and evolution of African civilizations before European contact have been suppressed, distorted or erased from textbooks. Furthermore, only relatively recently have a number of historiographies on such topics as the internal, trans-Sahara and transAtlantic slave trades and slavery have begun to be produced in academia. Moreover, scholars have been slow to recognize the central role of Africa in disciplines such as economics, art, literature, science and music in the global currents of intellectual and philosophical thought. Hopefully, the voice, agency and self-representation of African/Black people have steadily emerged from the shadows in various forms of life writing, in addition to original research and publications across disciplines. This paper and accompanying workshop for teacher educators is this author's initiative to bring a historical consciousness to both a curricular and pedagogical need for engagement with the scholarship produced by African-descended peoples. My thesis is that various genres of life writing-memoirs, autobiographies and biographies-can enhance the learning and teaching about Africa and African descended peoples in such a way as to bring about a holistic understanding of the historical and institutional bases for their contemporary human condition, locally and globally. Teacher educators who prepare language arts and social studies teachers for the public school system will find texts at various reading levels among the resources. Teachers of the humanities and social sciences at the tertiary level will have the opportunity to explore ways in which auto/biographies may enhance their learning and teaching. 1. In this paper, the author offers a rationale for Black Studies programs for the reader's consideration, attempts to resolve the question, loBlack History for what? and illustrates how Black History can be taught as an integral part of a modern social studies curriculum which is spiral, conceptual, and interdisciplinary, and which emphasizes decision-making and social action skills. Black History should help students develop the ability to make reflective decisions so that they can resolve personal problems and shape public policy by participating in intelligent social action; the goal of Black History should be to help students become effective change agents. "What You Supposed to Know": Urban Black students' perspectives on history textbooks
Research in social studies education has raised significant practical and epistemological concerns with the history textbooks used in urban schools. While these concerns are well documented, we know less about their implications for Black students’ understandings and applications of historical content. This qualitative, ethnographic study explored six Black, urban students’ perspectives on history textbooks and how these textbooks influenced their historical knowledge about civil rights leaders. Guided by the critical race framework, connections are drawn between participants’ recollections of textbook accounts and their understandings of contemporary racial relationships and civil rights struggle. Findings suggest a contentious relationship with the information presented in textbooks and the need to rethink social studies curriculum and pedagogy in relation to the contextual realities and lived experiences of Black urban youth.
