When Art Informs: Inviting Ways to See Disability

Learning Disability Quarterly, 2011

In this essay I consider the arts-created and performed by artists v^/ith disabilities-as a site of productive knowledge for educators willing to interrogate the limits of scientific ways of understanding disability. A sample of artists who deploy the arts for self-understanding and self-expression informed by their experience living with disability in contemporary society is included here. The artists represent all disability categories in an effort to encourage LDQ readers to probe the multiple possibilities that exist for researching learning disabilities by reflecting on the cultural meanings ascribed to disability experience, and, in particular, those meanings authored by individuals with disabilities. The cultural flashpoints described here reflect a shift in understanding the disability experience in the present moment and, as such, hold great promise for translation and application by researchers and educators.

The image as a relate: video as a resource for listening to and giving voice to persons with learning disabilities

British Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2011

We wanted to show how we try to give the voice of persons with learning disabilities. We have used video as the means by which we can collect and show what people with intellectual disabilities say. We learnt • Video is a tool that offers persons with learning difficulties the opportunity to express their experiences. • Video can help make people with intellectual disabilities more visible and can help us listen to what they have to say.

A visual report on what is of value for people with intellectual disabilities in a Flemish care organisation

2020

Background: This paper presents the findings from a qualitative research project that explored what ten people with intellectual disabilities who receive care and support in a residential care facility deem valuable for living a good life and what the opportunity to manage resources for care and support themselves means to them. Method: With the use of photovoice, the 10 participants documented their care and support, and by extension, their own lives. We describe how the project was carried out and the facilitating and obstructing factors we encountered. Results: The collected images and related personal stories teach us about the central importance of significant others to the lives of the participants and their vital role as "necessary others" who nurture a multitude of possibilities. Conclusions: The increasing policy focus on independence and self-sufficiency is opposed to the vital role of relationships in the participants' view of a good life.

‘It’s my home and your work’: the views of a filmed vignette describing a challenging everyday situation from the perspective of people with intellectual disabilities

International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being, 2018

Purpose: Examining everyday challenges in the interactions between people with intellectual disabilities and their staff, as seen from the user's perspective, is an important perspective in health care research. Involving people with intellectual disabilities as so-called co-researchers is a relatively unexplored research strategy. In this paper, co-researchers participated in all the steps of the research process, from planning to reporting, in addition to the written reporting of the findings. The aim of this study was to explore how people with intellectual disabilities experienced a filmed vignette of an everyday situation. Method: Based on audio-recorded and transcribed individual and focus-group interviews with people with intellectual disabilities, performed by co-researchers with intellectual disabilities together with researchers, qualitative content analysis was used. Results: The analysis reveals three themes: "being emotionally touched", "being aware of the other", and "being unclear". Conclusions: The results are discussed in light of normalization and participation in society with independence and one's own decision-making. Regarding the care of people with intellectual disabilities, the main finding is the need to focus not only on greater involvement of this population in their own daily lives, but also to teach self-determination skills. Another finding is the importance of involving people with intellectual impairment as co-researchers.

The Image of Disability Among Intellectually Disabled People

2014

The work presented in this article is based on the theory of social representations and it is an exploratory study that aims to know the image that intellectual disabled people have about disability. 17 intellectual disabled people of both sexes (ages range from 16 to 44 years old) participated in this study. An individual interview was done about disability and participants were asked to make two drawings: a drawing of a disabled person and a drawing of a non-disabled person. All data were collected by the psychologist of the Center where the participants are service users. After referring to the main methodological difficulties we faced in data collection, we present the results of a content analysis of participants’ answers. Essentially, this analysis shows the existence of two images of disability associated with two groups of individuals: those who saw disability as physical or sensorial disability and also as an inability to acquire some school competencies and those for whom ...

Symeonidou, S. & Loizou, E. (2018). Disability studies as a framework to design disability awareness programs: no need for ‘magic’ to facilitate children’s understanding. Disability & Society, DOI: 10.1080/09687599.2018.1488677

This paper presents and critically discusses a disability awareness program that was addressed to non-disabled children aged between 6-8 years old in Cyprus. The main aims were to explore how disability studies and antioppressive pedagogies could inform decisions on structured activities and materials to support children understand disability as condition of life, and recognize disabling practices. Artefacts from children's work and narratives are presented throughout the paper to inform decisions and choices in relation to the program. The discussion draws on international literature and critically examines: a. how disability feminists' focus on experiences of disability can have a central place in awareness raising programs, and can be further strengthened by a social model understanding of disability, b. the local context and the use of language as raised by postmodernists/poststructuralists, and c. the use of cartoons as a form of art that can help recognize and challenge dominant disability stereotypes.

Exploring the ability of individuals with an intellectual disability to generate and use a compassionate image

Journal of Applied Research in Intellectual Disabilities

Background: It has been 10 years since Whitehouse and colleagues (2006) carried out a systematic review examining the key adaptations of psychological therapies for people with Intellectual Disabilities. The past decade has seen developments in this area of research. Following on from their study; this review aimed to examine how these adaptations have changed over time. Methods: Published studies were systematically reviewed to evaluate the adaptations in individual psychological interventions for people with Intellectual Disability during the period 2007-2017. Seven articles were identified. Articles were evaluated using a quality rating tool. Content analysis was used to examine the key adaptations. Results: All studies identified the following adaptations: memory aids, augmenting activities, directive methods and involving caregivers in therapy sessions. Six of these studies referred to a treatment manual. Conclusions: While many of the adaptations remain unchanged, there have been developments which, perhaps in part, reflect recent attempts to incorporate newly emerging psychological therapies for people with intellectual disability.
