Business Process Management Systems (BPMSs) are software platforms that support the definition, execution, and tracking of business processes. BPMSs have the ability of logging information about the business processes they support. Proper analysis of BPMS execution logs can yield important knowledge and help organizations improve the quality of their business processes and services to their business partners. This paper presents a set of integrated tools that supports business and IT users in managing process execution quality by providing several features, such as analysis, prediction, monitoring, control, and optimization. We refer to this set of tools as the Business Process Intelligence (BPI) tool suite. Experimental results presented in this paper are very encouraging. We plan to investigate further enhancements on the BPI tools suite, including automated exception prevention, and refinement of process data preparation stage, as well as integrating other data mining techniques.

To be able to manage the processes it is essential to possess information on the current progress of the processes as well as past performance. This requires to create for each process particular indicators that measure its performance. By comparing the past values of indicators the process owner may calculate the progress made in improving the quality of process. Most business processes are described by at least few measures, which may be on different levels and often may be expressed in different units. Using business intelligence systems, there is a need to express the performance of the process using a single complex indicator. The use of information technologies to manage processes makes it possible to automate many activities that previously were performed by the process owner. BPAF: A Standard for the Interchange of Process Analytics Data
During the initialization and execution of a process instance, multiple events occur which may be of interest to a business, including events that relate to the instantiation and completion of process activities, internal process engine operations and other system and application functions. Process mining and other analytical techniques often involve extracting this process history data from a process execution environment and submitting the data to the process analytics environment for processing. We present the Business Process Analytics Format, an XML-based interchange format for process audit events that combines an extensible state model with a robust XML representation, is able to accommodate multiple event originators and can map to the popular MXML format used in process mining applications.
Monitoring and Analyzing Influential Factors of Business Process Performance

Business activity monitoring enables continuous observation of key performance indicators (KPIs). However, if things go wrong, a deeper analysis of process performance becomes necessary. Business analysts want to learn about the factors that influence the performance of business processes and most often contribute to the violation of KPI target values, and how they relate to each other. We provide a framework for performance monitoring and analysis of WS-BPEL processes, which consolidates process events and Quality of Service measurements. The framework uses machine learning techniques in order to construct tree structures, which represent the dependencies of a KPI on process and QoS metrics. These dependency trees allow business analysts to analyze how the process KPIs depend on lower-level process metrics and QoS characterisitics of the IT infrastructure. Deeper knowledge about the structure of dependencies can be gained by drill-down analysis of single factors of influence.

Business Process Management: A Comprehensive Survey
Business Process Management (BPM) research resulted in a plethora of methods, techniques, and tools to support the design, enactment, management, and analysis of operational business processes. This survey aims to structure these results and provides an overview of the state-of-the-art in BPM. In BPM the concept of a process model is fundamental. Process models may be used to configure information systems, but may also be used to analyze, understand, and improve the processes they describe. Hence, the introduction of BPM technology has both managerial and technical ramifications, and may enable significant productivity improvements, cost savings, and flow-time reductions. The practical relevance of BPM and rapid developments over the last decade justify a comprehensive survey.

The article tackles the topics related to systems, methods and mechanisms for storing process definitions and instances for the purpose of their analytical processing-process warehouses and general architecture of such process warehouses, including tools allowing their extract, transform, load (ETL) as well as analytical processing and exploration of stored process definitions and instances-i.e. the process mining. Furthermore, the article describes a mechanism for storing processes, with the use of a network database, and one of the methods for researching into similarities of the processes through the tagging of generic processes.
