A sustainable building is constructed of materials that could decrease environmental impacts, such as energy usage, during the lifecycle of the building. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been identified as an effective tool for building performance analysis virtually in the design stage. The main aims of this study were to assess various combinations of materials using BIM and identify alternative, sustainable solutions to reduce operational energy consumption. The amount of energy consumed by a double story bungalow house in Johor, Malaysia, and assessments of alternative material configurations to determine the best energy performance were evaluated by using Revit Architecture 2012 and Autodesk Ecotect Analysis software to show which of the materials helped in reducing the operational energy use of the building to the greatest extent throughout its annual life cycle. At the end, some alternative, sustainable designs in terms of energy savings have been suggested.

J. Inf. Technol. Constr., 2021
The construction industry has a huge impact on the environment in terms of noise, water and land pollution, traffic congestion and waste disposal. Another aspect of the construction industry impact on the environment is the increasing energy consumption. According to published research, buildings energy use is expected to increase by 32% by the year 2040. As a result, efforts have been directed toward improving green building awareness and the application of sustainability concepts in the design, construction and building management processes. In this research, using extensive simulations, the integration between Building Information Modeling methodology (BIM) and Building Energy Modeling (BEM) methodologies in order to effectively minimize the overall energy consumption of a residential building in the UAE is investigated by studying several design factors including: building orientation and windows type, size and distribution on the overall building energy consumption. Results sho...
Responding To Building Energy Analysis And Performance With Building Information Model (BIM)
2015
One rapidly evolving process that has been envisioned to support building energy performance analysis is the Building Information Modelling. Given the ability of Building Information Models to serve as a multi-disciplinary data repository, this dissertation seeks to explore and exploit the sustainability value of Building Information Modelling/models in delivering buildings that require less energy for its operation, emits less CO2 and at the same time provides a conducive living environment for its occupants. This paper’s objective was achieved by a critical and extensive review of literature covering the following areas: (1) building energy consumption, (2) building energy performance and analysis, and (3) building information modeling and energy assessment. Literature cited in this paper show that linking an energy analysis tool with a BIM model helped project design teams to predict and create sustainable construction projects. To buttress this finding, an in-depth analysis was ...

Reducing carbon emissions and addressing environmental policies in the construction domain has been intensively explored with solutions ranging from energy efficiency techniques with building informatics to user behavior modelling and monitoring. Such strategies have managed to improve current practices in managing buildings, however decarbonizing the built environment and reducing the energy performance gap remains a complex undertaking that requires more comprehensive and sustainable solutions. In this context, building information modelling (BIM), can help the sustainability agenda as the digitalization of product and process information provides a unique opportunity to optimize energy-efficiency-related decisions across the entire lifecycle and supply chain. BIM is foreseen as a means to waste and emissions reduction, performance gap minimization, in-use energy enhancements, and total lifecycle assessment. It also targets the whole supply chain related to design, construction, as well as management and use of facilities, at the different qualifications levels (including blue-collar workers). In this paper, we present how building information modelling can be utilized to address energy efficiency in buildings in the operation phase, greatly contributing to achieving carbon emissions targets. In this paper, we provide two main contributions: (i) we present a BIM-oriented methodology for supporting building energy optimization, based on which we identify few training directions with regards to BIM, and (ii) we provide an application use case as identified in the European research project "Sporte2" to demonstrate the advantages of BIM in energy efficiency with respect to several energy metrics.
Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Energy Performance of Building - A Review
Journal of Applied Artificial Intelligence
Nowadays, the advancement of technologies in the building industry may give a significant impact to the environment. The building sector contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions which may harm the environment and the high consumption of energy required high demand in burning the fossil fuel. These may effects the environment where, the carbon dioxide (CO2) has been significantly released to the atmosphere and harm the environment which may lead to global warming. In order to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, there is a need to develop a solution which may account these environmental problems. Conserving the energy of the building is one of the strategies to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions to the environment. Recently, linking the building information modelling (BIM) to analyse the energy performance of the building has been spread widely. BIM has been recognized as a suitable tool to perform a building analysis in the early design...
Effective Energy Consumption Parameters in Residential Buildings Using Building Information Modeling
GJESM Publisher; Iran Solid Waste Association, Tehran University, Iran, 2020
Building information modeling can help in predicting the energy efficiency in future based on dynamic patterns obtained by visualization of data. The aim of this study was to investigate the effective parameters of energy consumption using BIM technology which can evaluate the buildings energy performance. First, three forms of general states in the building were modeled to evaluate the proposed designs in Autodesk Revit Software. Then, the main building form for energy modeling and analysis was selected. Autodesk Revit 2020 software was also used to obtain the results of climate data analysis and building energy consumption index. Finally, the most optimal mode was selected by examining different energy consumption modes. The results showed that the use of building information modeling technology in adjusting the parameters affecting energy consumption can save energy cost up to 58.23% in block D. Energy cost savings for block C and the western lobby were obtained as 51.03% and 43.05%, respectively. Based on energy use intensity, energy cost savings for blocks C, D, and the western lobby were estimated as 16.67%, 16.30%, and 11%, respectively. The results of parametric studies on alternative schemes of energy use intensity optimization showed that 16.30% savings could be achieved by the base building model in a 30-year time horizon. Therefore, it was concluded that optimization of energy consumption would reduce the environmental pollutants emission and contribute to preservation and sustainability of the environment.

The construction industry (CI) has a significant impact on the environment and on climate change due to the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Globally accepted Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically SDG 7 (Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and Modern Energy for All), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) stress the responsible utilization of energy in various industries, including construction. The CI uses almost half of the world’s produced energy. Therefore, this research presents insights into the efficient use of energy in the building sector and shows how energy efficiency can be achieved by altering different parameters and components like orientation, materials, glazing, and HVAC systems through a case study of a hospital building in Green Building Studio (GBS). This paper also aims to use the Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach to make environmentally sustainable decisio...
