Anthropometric measurements for ergonomic design of students’ furniture in India

This paper presents anthropometric measurements regarding engineering students in India. Health survey (ergonomic assessment) was carried out to know the health status of all students who have been using poorly designed furniture. The data were measured with the help of various tools. After data collection and analysis, authors came up with exhaustive dimensions for designing adjustable classrooms furniture. Dimensions recommended include; bench surface height, bench depth and width, back rest width and height, backrest angle, desk height, desk depth, width, and desk angle. Therefore, an implementation of these data will help to create comfortability, safety, well-being, suitability, reduce Musculoskeletal disorders, and improve performance of students in terms of attentiveness. Also, it is highly recommended to consider requirements from students in designing classrooms furniture and conduct seminar or workshop to educate students regarding the negative impact towards adapting poor posture in the long usage of classrooms furniture.
The desk-and-chair and chair-with-mounted-desktop furniture are widely used in the classrooms of Bangladeshi universities. However, an anthropometric survey showed that the fixed-type and side-mounted-desktop-chair used by university students in Bangladesh were not manufactured according to ergonomic considerations. The study evaluated the potential mismatch between university classroom furniture dimensions and anthropometric characteristics of 500 Bangladeshi university students. Fifteen anthropometric measurements and nine dimensions from the existing classroom furniture were measured and then compared together to identify any potential mismatch between them. The paper showed the variation between the anthropometric measurements of students and the dimensions of existing furniture. The results indicated that the seat height of both desk-and-chair and side-mounted-desktop-chair was high, while the desk height of desk-and-chair was high and that of side-mounted desktop chair was low for the students. The paper also recommends the furniture dimensions for both types, which are ergonomically fit.

In many institutions, classroom furniture does not meet any national ergonomic criteria. This study aimed to use the concept of ergonomics to design a classroom desktop-chair for students in Uasin-Gishu County, Kenya. Anthropometric data were collected from a total of 382 students of both genders. The fourteen anthropometric measurements were taken from students with the help of anthropometric tools. The research applied fundamental engineering principles of product design and was carried out in compliance with ISO 7250-1:2017. The data obtained was analysed using Minitab 17.0 statistical package. Using the collected anthropometric data, a students' desktop-chair was proposed. In conclusion, one type of ergonomically suitable classroom desktop-chair design was proposed to improve the match between classroom desktop-chairs' dimensions and students' anthropometric characteristics. It is highly recommended that similar scientific research should be carried out in other countries.
Design and Development of an Ergonomic Chair for Students in Educational Settings

Background: Proper designing of chairs based on ergonomics increases efficiency, promotes quality of education, leads to correct posture in students, and reduces risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Objectives: The aim of this study was to design and develop an ergonomic chair, based on anthropometric data of students in educational settings. Methods: Anthropometric parameters were obtained from a stratified-random sample of 207 students. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 20 software, and the results were extracted as mean, standard deviation, and percentiles. The chair was planned in the CATIA software and developed by a three-dimensional print. Results: In this study, an ergonomic chair was designed based on anthropometric data from students. The seat height, depth, and width of the chair were determined as 44 cm, 42 cm, and 42.15 cm, respectively. The height of the desk was adjustable in 19 to 29 cm, and the depth and length of the desk were considered as 51 cm and 65 cm. The width and height of the backrest were also 54 cm and 44 cm, and the backrest angle was adjustable in 95°to 105°. Conclusions: An ergonomic chair with adjustable parts was designed to achieve a well-match between anthropometric characteristics of students and the furniture. Such chair can reduce musculoskeletal disorders in students. Some ergonomic characteristics of this chair include adjustability of footrest, backrest, armrests, and desk. A chair with such characteristic can be used by many students with different body sizes.
Anthropometric Consideration for Designing Students Desks in Engineering Colleges
The present study is aimed to evaluate the extent of mismatch between different dimensions of students furniture and the respective anthropometric measures of students. For this purpose, 400 engineering students in the age group 18-24 years were randomly selected from engineering colleges in North Karnataka. The dimensions of the students desks available in the classrooms were taken. The class room furniture was evaluated with a defined match criterion given by various researchers. For the evaluation of classroom furniture a match criterion equation was defined. After considering the existing classroom furniture dimensions in each match criterion equation, the anthropometric characteristics of the considered population were compared in order to determine the mismatch between them. The results from the present study show that the college furniture is far from compatible with the anthropometric measurements of the students. there was a significant difference between the desk height and the sum of elbow rest height and popliteal height of the students, seat height and popliteal height, seat width and buttock popliteal length.. Incompatible furniture forced the students to adopt unnatural postures (lateral bend, forward bend, twisting, etc.) in the classroom for long periods, which imposes physical and mental strain on the students. It is recommended to develop an anthropometric database of students and on the basis of it, at the time of renewal of furniture, take into consideration this information either to gain adjustable furniture or possibly acquire, in size, three types of desks, large, medium and small so that students have the options and find the most suited to their anthropometry.

Purpose: Sitting for a long time is considered to be one of the most important disease risks. Therefore, individual-specific arrangements in the early period can prevent these diseases. This study was aimed to assess the suitability of school desk and chair for Turkish population with current anthropometric measurements and find out the impact of this on the same participants' life quality. Method: The students of the School of Health Science (N=153) made up the sample for this study. 14 different anthropometric measurements were taken from the participants and they were required to fill in the WHOQOL-Bref Life Quality Scale for the last month in the study. Result: Statistically no significant difference was determined in regards of general and sub-parameters of life quality points such as physical and environmental points between sample female (n=81) and male (n=72) population (p>0.05). Some fit and unfit measurements for desk dimensions were determined when anthropometric measurements of desk dimensions were analyzed minimally and maximally (5-95%) in terms of gender. Conclusion: In this study musculoskeletal disorders owing to the long term use of ergonomically unsuitable desks by determining fit and unfit measurements in desk dimensions and the effect of this on life quality are explained. Also norm values for new furniture designs were determined by calculating anthropometric measurements that must be updated termly for the continuously changing population.
This study determined the compatibility of cahirs and tables in computer laboratory to the students body dimension at the Lyceum of the Philippines University, Batangas City. Descriptive type of research method was utilized in the study. The researchers used large and small anthropometer and tape rule from the ergonomics laboratory of the university to measure the body dimension of the students. The researchers found out that the average of the body dimensions (shoulder width, hip width, back length, buttock popliteal length, knee height, and elbow height) of the engineering students are fit to the existing computer laboratory chairs and tables. Only five of 81 students that the researchers interviewed have said that they are not comfortable when they are using computer in the engineering computer laboratory even though their sizes are fit to the existing computer laboratory chairs and table.

As the design of a workstation can have significant effects on user fatigue, safety and user performance, ensuring that the workstations used in any work systems are agreeable with the principles of anthropometrics have become so important. In this research, a library furniture set (table and chair for student) currently used at a Main Library, College of Engineering, Defence University, Bishoftu, has been evaluated. The study evaluated the potential mismatch between library furniture dimensions and anthropometric characteristics of 121 Ethiopian University students (25 females, 96 males) randomly selected, aged 18-38 years. Thirteen anthropometric measurements of students (Stature, Hip breadth, Mid-shoulder sitting height, Elbow rest height, Sitting height, Buttock-popliteal length, Buttock-knee length, Buttock-toe length, Popliteal height, Thigh clearance, Eye height sitting, Shoulder, Knee height) and five chair dimensions (Chair seat height, Chair seat depth, Chair seat width, Chair backrest height, Back rest width) from the existing library furniture were measured and then compared together (using match criterion equations) and also to identify any potential mismatch between them. The results indicated an all mismatch between body dimensions of the students and the existing library furniture. Also, the data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as means, standard deviations, fifth, fiftieth and ninety fifth percentiles for the table and chair dimensions and student's body dimensions were calculated using Excel Microsoft Package. Moreover, the data obtained from the student's body dimensions was compared with the relevant dimensions of the furniture using independent samples t-test (2-tailed) and chi-square test at 95 percent level of confidence. Again, the results showed a degree of mismatch between the student's body dimensions and furniture dimensions. This may be an indication that the dimensions of locally manufactured library furniture and student's anthropometric dimensions are at variant. It was thus concluded that the anthropometric dimensions of the Ethiopian student's were not employed in the design and manufacturing of library furniture. The proposed dimensions of the library furniture more appropriate for the students were given. This additional information on students' anthropometry can be used by local furniture industries as a starting point for designing more appropriate furniture for universities students, or used by university to aid in furniture selection.

In our competing educational world, students spend a considerable part of their daily life, studying at library furniture. Not surprisingly, due to lack of proper anthropometric databases, these products have typically been ill fitted for the intended user populations. To verify the optimum anthropometric match of library furniture within an academic environment, through a combined qualitative and quantitative approach. 267 (120 female and 147 male) students, were subjected to 11 standard anthropometric measurements. In line with the measurements, subjective evaluations were also considered through detailed fitting trials on selected groups of participants. Combinational equations defined the unacceptable furniture dimensions according to elbow and sitting popliteal heights, mainly for smaller and taller divisions of the studied population, which were systematically comparable along with subjective and objective outcomes.
