The Meaning and Importance of European Identity and its Relationship to Regional and National Identities in Spain: Some Contributing Factors to the Development of European Identity. European, Spanish, and regional identities were studied as part of a wider research survey of youth beliefs and experiences regarding the European Union. The research was conducted in the capital city (Madrid) and the Basque Country (Bilbao). At each location, representative and European-oriented youth samples (N=400 and N=100 each) of 18-24 years (50% female) were gathered. The interviewees were asked about their perception of border countries as included in Europe, and to rate different feasible meanings of the EU, its impact (at personal, regional, and country levels), and different cognitive, affective and evaluative aspects of European, Spanish and regional identities.

How to build the European Identity? Attitudes towards the European Union across its countries

Journal of Identity and Migration Studies, 2013

This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of the process of European identity formation, using systematic comparisons of national attitudes towards the European Union. The topic of European identity has generated a lively academic debate in the recent decades. The article investigates the patterns of European identity construction and the similarities between national and European identities in terms of articulation and the relationship between the two layers of identity. Are these identities in competition? It is necessary, in order to develop the European identity, national identity to be at least eroded or they can coexist peacefully? The paper will analyze different types of arguments, suggests that European identity can be constructed, and function alongside national identity. The empirical evidence drawn from surveys shows that national identification and European identification are not perceived as contradictory and people feel part of both communities.

ATTITUDES BEHIND EUROPEAN IDENTITY

2014

The present paper addresses the topic of European and national identities, in the context of the European Union. Identity can be defined as sum of presumed attitudes and behaviors (Diken, 2003). Furthermore, the individual and social identity is related to the attachment theory in a certain way. In the same way as we can attach to other people, we can attach to ideas and places-such as home country and Europe (Bowlby, 1982). According to these ideas, we supposed that the students who defined themselves not only by their national identity but also by a superordinate category (European), have more positive attitudes and emotions toward the European Union and the process of European integration. Our research investigates the attitudes of two samples of 111 Hungarian and 100 Romanian adolescents (16-17 years old) towards European Union membership. The emotional aspect of attitudes concerning European and national attachment were investigated using Semantic Selection Test (De'Escury, 2008; Szabó, 2010) and the cognitive and behavioral components of these attitudes were explored by a questionnaire focusing on the perceived consequences of the home country's European integration. The results confirmed our hypothesis.

The Europeans of tomorrow: Researching European identity among young Europeans

2009

After the rejection of the European Constitution in 2005, and more recently the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty by the Irish, questions were raised about if and how European citizens feel connected to the European Union. What does it actually mean to feel European? Not much empirical study has yet been undertaken, especially in political science research, on this topic. This is due to the difficulty of dealing with identity questions. Not only are identities amorphous, contextually influenced and sometimes fluid, it is hard to get a full understanding of this concept by using just one methodological approach. This paper‟s analysis is based on the writings of M. Bruter (2005) who makes a conceptual distinction between a civic and a cultural European political identity, thus overcoming the often acclaimed theoretical deadlock that exists in literature on political identity. Theoretically, this paper thus elaborates on this framework as proposed by Bruter. Empirically, the paper focuses...

Symbolic and pragmatic aspects of European identity

Sociologija, 2006

It seems realistic that one of the long-term preconditions of European integration is the strengthening of European identity. Otherwise, it might happen that a growing split occurs between the elites and the population in the question of integration. In the Western European countries the concepts of Europe and the EU frequently coincide, while in the Eastern European countries Europe has primarily cultural-historical connotations and the EU embodies economic development and welfare. In an international comparison, European identity was stronger in the newly joining countries, but in some of them (i.e. in Hungary and Estonia) the national identity was among the strongest as well. The current study is based on a Hungarian representative survey carried out in 2003 - that is before Hungary joined the European Union. We supposed that class positions, the availability of material, cultural and social resources strongly influence European identity. We examined two aspects of identity, a sy...
