A high-order extension for the Cattaneo's diffusion equation
Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2006
In this paper, a high-order generalization of the diffusion Cattaneo's equation is considered. A class of admissible linear relaxation dynamics is characterized by computing the impedance of a simple diffusion process. Some examples are used to illustrate the results. r
Stochastic foundation of normal and anomalous Cattaneo-type transport
Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1999
We investigate the connection of the Cattaneo equation and the stochastic continuous time random walk (CTRW) theory. We show that the velocity model in a CTRW scheme is suited to derive the standard Cattaneo equation, and allows, in principle, for a generalisation to anomalous transport. As a result for a broad waiting time distribution with diverging mean, we ÿnd a strong memory to the initial condition of the system: The ballistic behaviour subsists also for long times. Only if a characteristic waiting time exists, a non-ballistic, enhanced motion is found in the limit of long times. No transition to subdi usion can be found.
Anomalous Diffusion From Basics to Applications

that physicists have written about the subject over the last 20 years thus seems advisable. In broad terms, a predator-prey model describes the dynamics of two kinds of entities-specifically, one kind could be destroyed on contact with the other.
Minimal model for anomalous diffusion
Physical Review E
A random walk model with a local probability of removal is solved exactly and shown to exhibit subdiffusive behavior with a mean square displacement the evolves as x 2 (t) ∼ t 1/2 at late times. This model is shown to be well described by a diffusion equation with a sink term, which also describes the evolution of a pressure or temperature field in a leaky environment. For this reason a number of physical processes are shown to exhibit anomalous diffusion. The presence of the sink term is shown to change the late time behavior of the field from 1/t 1/2 to 1/t 3/2 .
Exact time-dependent solutions for anomalous diffusion with absorption
Granular Matter, 2001
Recently, analytical solutions of a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation describing anomalous diffusion with an external linear force were found using a non extensive thermostatistical Ansatz. We have extended these solutions to the case when an homogeneous absorption process is also present. Some peculiar aspects of the interrelation between the deterministic force, the nonlinear diffusion and the absorption process are discussed.

Within the framework of the Maxwell-Cattaneo relaxation model extended to reaction-diffusion systems with nonlinear advection, travelling wave (TW) solutions are analytically investigated by studying a normalized reaction-telegraph equation in the case of the reaction and advection terms described by quadratic functions. The problem involves two governing parameters: (i) a ratio ϕ 2 of the relaxation time in the Maxwell-Cattaneo model to the characteristic time scale of the reaction term, and (ii) the normalized magnitude N of the advection term. By linearizing the equation at the leading edge of the TW, (i) necessary conditions for the existence of TW solutions that are smooth in the entire interval of −∞ < ζ < ∞ are obtained, (ii) the smooth TW speed is shown to be less than the maximal speed ϕ −1 of the propagation of a substance, (iii) the lowest TW speed as a function of ϕ and N is determined. If the necessary condition of N > ϕ − ϕ −1 does not hold, e.g., if the magnitude N of the nonlinear advection is insufficiently high in the case of ϕ 2 > 1, then, the studied equation admits piecewise smooth TW solutions with sharp leading fronts that propagate at the maximal speed ϕ −1 , with the substance concentration or its spatial derivative jumping at the front. An increase in N can make the solution smooth in the entire spatial domain. Moreover, an explicit TW solution to the considered equation is found provided that N > ϕ. Subsequently, by invoking a principle of the maximal decay rate of TW solution at its leading edge, relevant TW solutions are selected in a domain of (ϕ,N) that admits the smooth TWs. Application of this principle to the studied problem yields transition from pulled (propagation speed is controlled by the TW leading edge) to pushed (propagation speed is controlled by the entire TW structure) TW solutions at N = N cr = 1 + ϕ 2 , with the pulled (pushed) TW being relevant at smaller (larger) N. An increase in the normalized relaxation time ϕ 2 results in increasing N cr , thus promoting the pulled TW solutions. The domains of (ϕ,N) that admit either the smooth or piecewise smooth TWs are not overlapped and, therefore, the selection problem does not arise for these two types of solutions. All the aforementioned results and, in particular, the maximal-decay-rate principle or appearance of the piecewise smooth TW solutions, are validated by numerically solving the initial boundary value problem for the reaction-telegraph equation with natural initial conditions localized to a bounded spatial region.
Computing the non-linear anomalous diffusion equation from first principles
Physics Letters A, 2008
We investigate asymptotically the occurrence of anomalous diffusion and its associated family of statistical evolution equations. Starting from a non-Markovian process à la Langevin we show that the mean probability distribution of the displacement of a particle follows a generalized non-linear Fokker-Planck equation. Thus we show that the anomalous behavior can be linked to a fast fluctuation process with memory from a microscopic dynamics level, and slow fluctuations of the dissipative variable. The general results can be applied to a wide range of physical systems that present a departure from the Brownian regime.
Analytical results for long-time behavior in anomalous diffusion
2012
We investigate through a Generalized Langevin formalism the phenomenon of anomalous diffusion for asymptotic times, and we generalized the concept of the diffusion exponent. A method is proposed to obtain the diffusion coefficient analytically through the introduction of a time scaling factor λ. We obtain as well an exact expression for λ for all kinds of diffusion. Moreover, we show that λ is a universal parameter determined by the diffusion exponent. The results are then compared with numerical calculations and very good agreement is observed. The method is general and may be applied to many types of stochastic problem.
