Pharmacist Prescribing System: A New Initiative in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Objectives: To declare the pharmacist prescribing system as new initiatives in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Methods: It is a new initiative project drove by national Pharmacist prescribing system services. The projects formulated from the international business model, pharmacy project guidelines and project management institution guidelines of a new project. The initiative project is written through project management professionals and contained of several parts, including the initial phase, the planning phase, the execution phase, the monitoring and controlling phase. Results: The pharmacist prescribing system services with a defined vision, mission and goals. The services had various benefits including clinical and economic on patients as illustrated in the review. The continuation of the project assured by risk management model description. In addition, the monitoring and controlling of the services as declared. The transition to operation project, though closing project stage explored in the analysis. Conclusion: The pharmacist prescribing system services is new initiative, part of the clinical pharmacy program. The Pharmacist prescribing system will reduce drug-related problems, improve clinical and economic outcomes of patients and the healthcare system and create patient's safety culture at healthcare organization; it is highly recommended to implement in Saudi Arabia.

This thesis explores the soft skills that a pharmacist needs in order to perform effectively. In order to be a good professional, a pharmacist should possess "a combination of comprehensive therapeutic knowledge, experience, problem-solving skills, and judgment" (Burke, et al., 2008). Throughout the research we expect to identify skills such as: teamwork skills, communication skills, patient oriented attitude, risk management skills, empathy, patience, reliability and professionalism, patient relation management, analytical skills, decision making among the employees of Dawacom. Knowing that managerial skills include technical skills, human skills and conceptual skills, it is hypnotized that, although pharmacists possess strong technical skills, they register a deficit in the human and conceptual skills areas. General Administration of Pharmaceutical Care at Ministry of Health (GAPC-MOH) in Saudi Arabia is responsible of implementing pharmaceutical care and related issues to all pharmaceutical care services of health care setting. General administration of pharmaceutical care established updated strategic plan after reviewing several strategic plans of national and international pharmaceutical organizations. The Strategic plan contains 5 general strategies, 15 initiatives, and 83 projects. The plan should follow up by assessment elements measures to reach successful results, its including but not limited general pharmacy services assessment, medication safety assessment, and patient satisfaction of pharmacy services, pharmacist competency, and pharmacist job satisfaction. The strategic plan for governmental pharmaceutical administrations is pathway map for all health care providers with emphasis on pharmacists, clinical pharmacists and pharmacy administrators. It is needed to implement pharmaceutical care in organized and long term method, to improve patient's outcome, and avoiding unnecessary cost in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Background: Pharmacy practice residency program (PPRG) is one of a major professional degree in Saudi Arabia. The residency is very high demand in the pharmacy market. The clinical pharmacist required to visit hospitals to improve the services and start the program. Objective: The goal of this study to explore the value of clinical pharmacist consultation visit with emphasis on clinical pharmacy services (CPS) and pharmacy education and training (PET) at Ministry of Health hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods: It is a twelve months cohort study of a regular visit to three major hospitals included public, pediatrics with maternity and emergency specialties at Riyadh region. The assessment used based on Saudi hospital pharmacy standards, MOH pharmacy strategic plan, and the 6-points Likert assessment scale system before the study and by the end of the study. The total number of finished projects were eighteen projects divided between CPS (twelve projects) and PET (six projects). Results: The improvements range changes in CPS from 16.7% to 100% with average positive improvement 48%. In the PET the improvements range changes were 32.8% to 100% with average positive changes was 85%. The highest score of the projects of CPS was an assessment of pharmacy services, assessment of emergency pharmacy services, and assessment of critical pharmacy services. The maximum score of the projects of PET was doing an interview with hiring a new pharmacist, train drug Information for staff pharmacist, and apply on the job training for the new pharmacist. Conclusion: The pharmacist showed practical significance impact on the clinical pharmacy services and pharmacy education and training in Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia. National Pharmacist Competency System at Ministry of Health Hospitals in Saudi Arabia
National Pharmacy Competency System is unique program founded at Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia. The program is a part of the general administration care strategic plan. The program consisted of three categories, including a general core of general pharmacist competency and clinical pharmacist competency. In addition to pharmacy management skills competency, and advance with different specialization of clinical pharmacy competency. The pharmacy competency system should perform at least annually. It is very hard to find a study to examine the extent application of pharmacist competency. Most of the works of literature discussed in single or one section of pharmacy practice. This system improves pharmacy practice, with the emphasis on drug therapy monitoring, prevent a drug related problem, and improve patient outcome therapy.

METHOD AND DESIGN: Descriptive Cross-sectional study was carried out in District Hyderabad/ Jamshoro with census sampling of Hospital Pharmacists. Duration of study was from Oct 2016 to Feb 2017. Self-administered questionnaire was developed from the job description of Hospital Pharmacists provided by the Health Department, GoS for study to assess role of Hospital Pharmacists. Questionnaire has 4 parts include the questions on the duties, responsibilities, recognition, development and working environment for Hospital Pharmacists. The data was analyzed in SPSS IBM version 21.0.
Evaluation of Hospital Pharmacy Setup in Government and Private Hospitals

To investigate about current position of hospital pharmacy setup in different government and private hospitals in Pakistan and foreign countries of Gulf. Method: This survey was done to evaluate the pharmacy setup present in government and private hospitals of Islamabad, Rawalpindi (Pakistan) Dubai and Riyadh (Gulf cities). A proforma was filled during the survey of 34 hospitals selected from public and private hospitals in these four cities. Result: Practically, 87.5% government and 69% private hospitals had pharmacy setup in Pakistan, whereas all government and private hospitals in Gulf countries had pharmacy setup. Most of government and private hospitals followed any one type of dispensing system, but nearly 37.5% of private hospitals do not follow any system in Pakistan. Conclusion: The study suggests that the hospital pharmacists do have concern about their professional responsibilities. However, pharmacy setup in Pakistan needs to achieve special consideration. The pharmacy setup in foreign countries is well-developed and well-maintained but no system can be perfect in any case. There are always some pitfalls in approach to standard positions. Local as well as foreign hospitals need some proactive on pharmacists to enlarge their roots in their profession.

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 License METHODS It is a retrospective analysis of eleven years (2006-2016) of MOH hospital pharmacist workforce. All data were derived from Ministry of Health statistical yearbooks. [15-25] It included pharmacist or clinical pharmacist's workforces at MOH hospitals. The type of hospital included having bed capacity 50-1500 beds with Adults public hospitals, pediatrics and maternity hospitals, Psychiatric hospitals, Diabetic centers, Cardiology centers, Oncology Centers, Renal Dialysis Centers, and Medical cities. All pharmacists were expected to provide pharmaceutical according to ASHP definition and requirements. [1-2] All type of pharmacy services were based on Saudi Central Board of hospital accreditation, Joint commission of hospital accreditation, ASHP best practice standards, and general administration of the pharmaceutical care strategic plan. [26-28] All Pharmacist works at MOH administration or non-MOH government hospitals and primary care centers were excluded from the studies. All private hospitals or community pharmacists were excluded from the study. All pharmacy technicians were excluded from the study. Introduction: The pharmacy is one of the most extensively used therapeutic services of the hospital. The study was conducted to assess and analyze the type of hospital pharmacy services and drug distribution system; the planning considerations for hospital pharmacy, the various policies and procedures involved and associated managerial issues. Materials and Method: The study was conducted in the hospital pharmacy of 600-bedded hospital of Gian Sagar Medical College & Hospital, Patiala, Punjab, India in September 2016 for 4 weeks. Multiple on-site observations were done over the staff of the pharmacy and their environment. Conclusion: The Gian Sagar pharmacy though running good has scope of improvement. The staffing, equipment and the organizational structure are satisfactory but the procurement of drugs is too slow resulting in many out-of-stock items. Moreover, the staff development is important because of continual changes in expectation of the quality of pharmacists, social needs and the new information technique in education.
