Engineering Technology Education in an Era of Globalization

The world has become a fundamentally different place than it was when most engineering technology (ET) curricula were devised and implemented. Graduates must interact in a global environment, as international corporations are the rule in virtually any sector where ET graduates seek jobs: electronics, automotive, aerospace, consumer goods, energy. Unfortunately, what graduates need to compete in those environments is not yet a significant part of many engineering technology programs. Engineering technology programs in the U.S. must adapt to the globalization of industry, and prepare faculty and students to face these new challenges. After setting the larger stage of engineering technology education in a global environment, specific details relating to Arizona State University, Brigham Young University, and Purdue University's activities towards meeting this challenge are detailed.
Global Engineering Education: Issues, Strategies and Predictions

This paper reviews results from a workshop on Global Engineering Education held at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, February 26 and 27, 2004. The motivation for this workshop came from a desire to get practitioners of global engineering education experiences together to talk about issues. The workshop proceeded through four stages: inspirational presentations, discernment of the issues, development of barriers and strategies to vault the barriers and summary conclusions. Twenty-six participants from 17 industries and universities from five countries selected 6 major issue areas. Each issue area was discussed and plans were developed to improve the progress toward global engineering education. A major conclusion is that global engineering education appears to be more important than was first thought. It can have an impact on the convergence of solutions for technological, social and cultural problems around the world and can help make progress toward improving living conditions in all countries by establishing a common understanding of and applying engineering solutions to human needs.
Developing Global Competencies through the Engineering Curriculum in the Americas

Recently there has been an urgent call to academia to educate the Global Engineer. The Engineering for the Americas (EftA) initiative has focused attention on producing engineers that would facilitate the flow of work and human resources across the Western Hemisphere. The IV Summit of the Americas recognized the importance of the initiative and the Organization of American States (OAS), Engineering for the Americas, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) organized the Engineering for the Americas Symposium in 2005 in Lima, Peru. The Symposium focused on the needs of the productive sector for engineering graduates and capacity building; quality assurance in engineering education; and country planning for financing of upgrades to engineering education. The Final Report urges the academic sector to boost its collaboration with industry to develop a change in paradigm to educate the Engineer of the 21st Century, which they describe as a world class engineers, leaders, visionaries, and entrepreneurs, committed to the social environment and with a clear sense of the common good; an engineer who helps to create himself/herself, not look for work but create it. This paper presents different initiatives that can be embedded in the engineering curriculum to facilitate the development of the global competencies that future engineers of the Americas will need to be competitive in the global market.
Engineering Education Solutions to a Global Economy
Engineering education has to face challenges that globalization poses and to adapt itself to a divers global work environment characterized by the increasing flow of economic goods, knowledge and information between countries and cultures. Extending multidisciplinary, senior design problem-and teamoriented projects, where students from different areas of engineering collaborate by adding an international component seems to be a natural, rewording path to follow. We have started with an international team composed of students from the Faculties of Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences and Automatics and Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology -at POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest (Romania) -and from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering (USA), in parallel with a second team made of students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Parana (Brazil) and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering (USA). The paper disseminates the strategy we used and the experience we gained in the selection of the team, the funding solutions, and the positive and negative elements of this first attempt to include an international component to the senior design project. Employers in the U.S. are recruiting engineering students who have intercultural competencies and can solve complex global engineering problems. However, a stringent engineering curriculum leaves little room for students to gain intercultural competencies, particularly for those enrolled in programs with mandatory cooperative education. An extensive literature review on the internationalization of curriculum in higher education documents program approaches, benefits, and learning outcomes. While there is broad agreement participation in global experiences fosters strands of intercultural competencies, there is less agreement as to which singular program approaches promote specific cultural learning outcomes. This action research study illuminates the concept of a Global Engineering Track and how its curriculum, cocurriculum, experiential education, and critical reflection stages can act as combined contributors towards developing intercultural authenticity. A conceptual theoretical framework defines how engineering programs can combine singular transformative engineering activities to reconceptualize an engineering curriculum.
Gaining International Competence: A Multi Faceted Approach To International Engineering Education

In direct alignment with Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology criteria to train engineers who should be globally competent, the International Programs in Engineering office in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan has created a broad palette of international program activities that will engage both its undergraduate and graduate student populations to develop global skills. Programs range in duration from a few hours to the length of an academic career and include language learning and cross-cultural training. These programs are accompanied by a strategic marketing plan that has resulted in a steady increase in participation, with more graduates who are well-equipped to deal with the challenges posed by working in multinational corporations.

This is a position paper on connecting engineering education to the prevailing needs of society. Engineering is the foundation for national development and engineers work at the intersection of science, technology, and societal needs. Throughout history, engineering has played a crucial role in the advancement of commerce, development of society, and the pursuit of human welfare. The application of engineering to the problems of society is predicated on structured education programs. This paper addresses how engineering education is progressively important to society and what must be done to continually advance the quality and effectiveness of engineering education. The paper proposes 15 grand challenges for global engineering education, based on the premise of the 14 grand challenges for engineering published in 2008 by the US National Academy of Engineering and highlights the role of diverse disciplinary viewpoints needed to ensure that engineering education addresses economic, cultural, and social factors that impinge upon engineering solutions to societal problems. The premise of the paper is to spark more interest in research into models, techniques, and tools essential for making engineering education more robust in solving global society problems.
Going big: Scaling up international engineering education to whole college initiatives

Comprehensive globalization in engineering design and manufacturing in the last decades has led to fundamental new imperatives, as we consider how to effectively train and prepare our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workforce to succeed in this diverse, multicultural, widely-distributed, multi-lingual research, design and production network. Over the past 10 years, many forward-looking institutions have experimented with internationalized curricula and programs to meet this need, but many remain smaller scale initiatives limited to one or two participating departments or programs. In order to take STEM internationalization to the next level, we need to efficiently make internationalized tracks available as a regular, attractive option to all STEM majors, requiring a comprehensive, uniform approach at the institutional level.
