Florence and Josephine O'Donoghue's War of Independence: A Destiny that Shapes Our Ends (original) (raw)

Abstract

A mixture of memoir, letters and narrative history tells a compelling love story set amidst espionage and guerrilla war. 'Florrie' O'Donoghue describes his evolution from an apolitical shop assistant to IRA intelligence chief, from 1916 to 1921. He recruits as a spy Josephine McCoy, a war widow working as a head clerk for the British Army, who is desperate to be reunited with her son. The clandestine collaborators ultimately marry and reflect on their unlikely union.
