Pictures Revisited: A Traditional Vehicle in Enhancing Young Learners’ Vocabulary

The dire state of high illiteracy rate in the English language among Malaysian students speaks for the need for efficacious language learning approaches, expressly to augment learners' vocabulary knowledge which is deemed the foundation of language development. This paper overviews the various measures pictures have been traditionally utilised for successful vocabulary learning and it surmises that pictures have been gainfully employed in picture storybooks and flashcards, as well as enlarged posters and imagery creation for effective vocabulary acquisition. As aptly put by Ryan (1993, p.1), “Carefully selected pictures can be a catalyst giving rise to the production of thousands of words.” Therefore, this paper aspires to firstly, appraise the diverse ways pictures havebeen tapped for language development and secondly, to examine the effectiveness of the methods and pose recommendations. Leveraging on the resources and previous research findings of researchers renowned in this field as a reference, this paper focuses largely on related studies by Malaysian researchers to render it relevant to Malaysian learners. It is hoped that this review does not only furnish one with consequential insights into vocabulary development for young learners that can be applied in our Malaysian classrooms for effective teaching and learning but serves to rejuvenate interests in pictures as a means to an end where vocabulary learning is concerned. The prevailing perspective is to acknowledge the richness and scope of pictures, as well as its versatility and to capitalize on them advantageously for utmost benefits in Malaysian classrooms. Implication of English Vocabulary Instruction Trough Pictures for Elementry Students

Vocabulary instruction in elementary students differs from other level of education. It aims to empower them understand English vocabulary related to their surroundings.This study focuses on the implication of vocabulary instruction in elementary students through pictures. The use of pictures initiate and activate students curiosity on topic. This study focuses on the use of pictures in learning vocabulary to elementary students. The data collection technique was in the form of observation and field note in one of state Elementary School (SDN) in Surabaya. The study found that picture game is useful to empower students in learning English vocabulary. In addition, students are able not only to write the words correctly, but also to construct simple sentence. This study provides suggestionto integrate picturesin learning vocabulary.Keywords: Vocabulary, Instruction, Elementary Students
The Effectiveness of Picture: An Empirical Evidence in Vocabulary Mastery

This action research was conducted to improve the students’ English vocabulary mastery by using picture. To achieve the objective, data were collected through the test, questionnaire and observation from 21 students in third graders of SDN Karawang Kulon II. The outcomes of the research showed that students’ vocabulary mastery got improved. This improvement is seen from the mean score of the test, i.e. 56.19 (Pre-test I), 81.90 (Post-test II), and 94.29 (Post-test II). Additionally, the result of questionnaire on the vocabulary teaching applying picture also shows the positive changes. The above data indicates that vocabulary picture can be effective media for vocabulary learning English. However, it is expected that other researchers could conduct similar researches on the related issues to develop it.
The Effectiveness of Using Picture to Teach Vocabulary at Elementary School

The objective of this research was aimed to find out whether teaching vocabulary using picture better than teaching vocabulary without picture (conventional) at Students of Elementary School. The Method of this study was a quasi-experimental design. The samples were 60 students. Meanwhile, there were some instruments used by the researcher to help him to collect data such as pre-test, treatment, and post-test result. The data were described based on the planning, implementation of process standard in teaching and the assessment as planned in the lesson plan. The data analysis found out that an F-value of the effect of teaching method was 10.781 and significance value was .002 where it is less than 0.05 and the mean score of post-test for experimental group was 87.60 and for control group was 80.80.The result of the research shows that experimental method has significance value and more better than conventional method. Improving Students’ Vocabulary Comprehension in Learning English Through Pictures

The objective in the research are to find out whether teaching vocabulary through pictures can improve the students’ vocabulary comprehension, and are the students’ interest in learning vocabulary through pictures at SMP Negeri 3 Merauke and the subject in this research was eight grade students B and C in SMP Negeri 3 Merauke. The research method using divided into quasi-experimental research. This sample of the research consisted of 40 students divided into two groups namely: 20 students to experimental group and 20 students to control group and conclude the data using two instruments; the vocabulary test for the students’ vocabulary achievement was analyzed used SPSS and the questionnaire was used to see students' interest in English learning vocabulary. This study aims at finding out the improving vocabulary mastery at elementary school students by using picture dictionary and to describe the students' attitude toward the using of picture dictionary in improving the vocabulary mastery. The total number of population is all students at elementary school students at SDN 5 Jerowaru, and from the total number of population the writer took some students in each class by using random sampling. So the total number of sample is 30 students. The data were taken by comparing their pre-test score and post-test score. The students was be given vocabulary test at the first time of meeting. The kind of the test is 10 point of the picture option base on multiple choices question of suitable words. And the test was given after the writer treats the students with pictures. The kind of the test is 10 point of jumble words, and questionnaire was used to get the data of the students whether the students like pictures, the picture motivated them in learning English vocabulary etc. The result of this study showed that picture dictionary has positive influence towards students' vocabulary mastery.
