EFFECT OF DIFFERENT POTASSIUM LEVELS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.)

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is a popular vegetable and the most important ingredient when any vegetable is cooked and referred to as "protective food" because of its special nutritive value and widespread production. The present research was carried out in 2017-18 at Horticulture Garden, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, Pakistan. To assess the Effect of Different Potassium levels on the Growth and Yield of Tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum mill.) the experimental trial was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The Gola Variety Seedlings are transplanted at the field. Six different potassium levels were used for soil fertility Viz K1 (Control/ without K), K2 (25 kg ha-1), K3 (50 kg ha-1), K4 (75 kg ha-1), K5 (100 kg ha-1) and K6 (125 kg ha-1). Potassium should be applied on split doses and tomato crop was planted and observations were recorded for plant height (cm), number of branches plant-1 , days to flowering, days to fruiting, number of fruits plant-1 , the weight of single fruit (g), fruit yield plot-1 (kg) and fruit yield (ton ha-1). It was found that all studied attributes were statically significant (P<0.05) and influenced by different potassium levels. The maximum plant height (107.00cm), number of branches plant-1 (9.33), number of fruits plant-1 (91.66), the weight of single fruit (105.67g), fruit yield plot-1 (45.48kg) and fruit yield (49.12ton ha-1) was recorded in where potassium 100 kg ha-1 was used. The maximum plant height (103.60cm), number of branches plant-1 (7.33), number of fruits plant-1 (87.66), the weight of single fruit (101.00g), fruit yield plot-1 (40.95kg) and fruit yield (44.23ton ha-1) was recorded in where potassium 75 kg ha-1 was used. While the minimum plant height (70.00cm), number of branches plant-1 (3.66), number of fruits plant-1 (60.00), the weight of single fruit (48.00g), fruit yield plot-1 (10.27kg) and fruit yield (11.09ton ha-1) was recorded in where potassium did not be used respectively. The present results that the (100 kg K ha-1) had a better result for all parameters and all results were statically significant.
Effects on Enhanced Potassium Doses on Yield, Quality and Nutrient Uptake of Tomato

Turkey produces 7 million tons of tomatoes in 160 thousand ha of land per year and occupies 7 % of the world production. Of the production, 73 % is consumed fresh, 25 % is processed and 2 % is exported. According to the 1998 statistics, 1.011.361 t of total 8.200.000 t tomato produced in Turkey is production under greenhouse conditions. Tomato production with share of 51 % is the first order in the vegetable production. The objective of the study was to examine the effect of K fertilization on greenhouse tomato yield and quality parameters. Enhanced levels of K (0-120-240-360 kg K2O ha-1) and required amounts of N (240 kg N ha-1) and P (120 kg P2O5 ha-1) were applied as a base and the remaining as side dressing. The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur, to study the effect of potassium on yield, quality and shelf life of tomato under ambient condition during 15 October 2015 to 30 June 2016. Six levels of K viz., 0, 35, 70, 105, 140 and 175 kg/ha consisted of the treatments of the experiment. Effect of potassium and its time of application on yield and quality of tomato

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of potassium and its time of application on yield and quality of tomato variety, Nagina. Treatments included three potassium levels i.e. 60, 90 and 120 kg ha and two application timings: at transplanting as single dose, and half at transplanting + half at 40 days after transplanting in two splits, were applied along with a control (0 kg ha K). Potassium application @ 60 kg ha either applied in single or in two splits, significantly increased the yield and improved the quality parameters of tomato over control while higher levels of K (90 and 120 kg ha ) did not show further significant increase in the yield and quality subsequently. A survey of 140 processing tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fields in central California was conducted in 1996-97 to examine the relationship between K nutrition and fruit quality for processing. Quality parameters evaluated were soluble solids (SS), pH, color of a blended juice sample, and the percent of fruit affected by the color disorders yellow shoulder (YS) or internal white tissue (IWT). Juice color and pH were not correlated with soil K availability or plant K status. SS was correlated with both soil exchangeable K and midseason leaf K concentration (r = 0.25 and 0.28, p < 0.01) but the regression relationships suggested that the impact of soil or plant K status on fruit SS was minor. YS and IWT incidence, which varied among fields from 0% to 68% of fruit affected, was negatively correlated with K status of both soil and plant. Fruit quality is a crucial factor in the production of tomato and potassium is the only mineral element known as the quality nutrient because of its vital role in building up of metabolites and activation of enzymes which ultimately improve chemical and sensory attributes of tomato fruit. In the present investigation effect of different rates of potassium fertilizer on chemical and sensory attributes of tomato were studied through pot experiment conducted during crop season of 2009. The pots were treated with K2O @ 0, 75, 150, 225, 300, 375, 450 Kg K2O ha along with basal doses of N and P (100 Kg N and 80 Kg P2O5 ha, respectively). An experiment was conducted to determine the fruit size, mineral composition and quality of trickle-irrigated tomatoes as affected by potassium fertilizer rates. Six potassium (K) rates were applied as KCl, corresponding to 0, 48.4, 118.6, 188.8, 259.0 and 399.4 kg ha -1 , with four replicates, following a randomized block design. Quadratic responses to K rates were observed for double extra large (diameter > 60 mm), extra large (56 to 60 mm) and large (52 to 56 mm) fruit yields. Maximum yields of these classes were achieved with K rates of 116, 190 and 233 kg ha -1 , respectively. Fruit dry matter, phosphorus, sulfur and magnesium contents were not affected by K rates, but nitrate and K contents showed significant increments as K rates were increased. Vitamin C, total soluble solids, lycopene and β-carotene contents in the fruits were not affected by K rates. Increments in the K rate lowered the fruit pH and increased total acids content.
Effect of potassium fertilization on the yield and quality of two tomato varieties

Lycopene is the main antioxidants in fresh tomatoes which important in the prevention of cancer. The antioxidants components of tomatoes can be influenced by management practices during period of tomato production, including variety and nutrition. In this study, the effects of potassium fertilizer on yield and quality of two varieties of tomatoes were investigated. Two local varieties of tomato (Karina and Mawar) were planted in polybags using different level of potassium fertilizer (50, 100, 150, 200, 250 kg.ha -1 K2O). The results showed that the effect of potassium fertilizer appear on Karina variety, particularly on fresh weight of fruit at 100, 150 and 250 kg.ha -1 of K2O. In addition, the tomato fruit of Karina variety contained the higher fruit diameter, fresh weight per fruit and larger amounts of betacarotene. FOLIAR APPLICATION OF POTASSIUM IMPROVES FRUIT QUALITY AND YIELD OF TOMATO PLANTS
Tomato is well known regarding its quality and nutritional value in all over the world but imbalances of fertilizer nutrients severely affect the quality of tomato. To investigate the specific contribution of potassium to yield and quality of tomato, a field experiment was conducted on two tomato cultivars, Nagina and Roma. Foliar application with varying levels (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0%) of potassium solutions was applied to the plants and compared with control (without K). Exogenous application of 0.6% K significantly improved plant height, lycopene content, potassium, fruit weight and diameter. Exogenous application of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7% K maximally improved ascorbic acid contents of both tomato cultivars whereas 0.4 and 0.8% did not improve ascorbic acid contents. Due to positive correlation between K nutrition and fruit quality attributes, exogenous application of an appropriate K level can contribute to higher yield and better quality of tomato fruits.
