Defining diaspora in ethnomusicological research (original) (raw)
The concept of 'diaspora' has evolved significantly from its original context concerning Jewish communities to encompass diverse social and cultural phenomena, particularly in the study of the African diaspora. Current definitions reflect its complexity, influencing various disciplines and highlighting its role in cultural identity formation and musical expression. This paper argues that diasporic communities hybridize their cultural identities, particularly through music, forming a 'third space' characterized by the interplay of local and foreign influences, ultimately creating unique cultural identities reflective of both their origins and current environments.
