“Less of a man”: Stigma, masculinity, and the male experience of eating disorders. (original) (raw)
2013, Guest lecture for the Masters of HIV, STIs, and Sexual Health (MHSSH), Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney, Parramatta, Australia.
Covers the "male experience" of eating disorders, from classical thinness-oriented conditions such as anorexia nervosa, to newer, less well-understood conditions, namely muscle dysmorphia. Foci are the "double bind" of stigmatisation for men with disorders at each end of the eating disorder spectrum and the intrinsic role that masculinity plays in sufferers' decision whether or not to seek treatment.
