The Application of Gis Technology in Tourism
2016
Geoinformatics, as a scientific discipline, was created as an expression of geographers’ need as well as other experts in the science of space, to apply the achievements in information technology and information science in its geographical studies. GIS is used for the collection, storage, management, analysis and mapping of spatial data. This is an information system that builds its specificity on the fact that it manipulates spatial data. Geographic information systems have found their purpose in the field of tourism, too. Tourism has more increasingly expressed demands for new technologies in the management and control of tourist activities, as well as in the decision-making process. In the beginning, just a few of its basic functions were developed to meet the needs of tourists: selection of hotels and information on shopping centers near the hotel or interesting tourist attractions. However, with the development of the tourism industry, GIS soon finds its use, not only in the ch...
The application of GIS and its components in tourism
Yugoslav Journal of Operations Research, 2008
Since the success of any tourism business is determined by tourism planning, development research and marketing, the first thing we review in this article is GIS application for tourism planning. Both tourism and IT increasingly provide strategic opportunities and powerful tools for economic growth, redistribution of wealth and development of equity around the globe. GIS technology offers great opportunities for the development of modern tourism applications using maps. This technology integrates common database operations such as query with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps. GIS is used for bringing the georeferenced data (spatial and non spatial) of geographic location Zlatibor and Zlatar into digital maps. Each object is assigned to a thematic layer. Each layer combines related objects like roads, building, protected areas or watercourses. In this research the authors used GIS in three types of applications such as inventory, analysis and evaluation of plan based on tourism development.

Identification of tourism potential represents the initial step in the organization of tourism offer of the certain administrative units or other spatial units. Modern scientific concept of tourism motives identification implies their systematization at the level of adequate thematic geodata sets that are based on two conceptual models. First methodological concept involves identifying and inventorying tourism motives according to the components of physical geographic and social geographic environment. In this case, attributes of associated thematic geodatabase minimally include name, type, degree of attractiveness, photo and forms of tourism that can be developed in the analyzed site. Second methodological concept is based on the identification of the tourism potentials according to territorial principle, which involves formation of geodatabases for all forms of tourism motives and all forms of tourism that can be formed in defined destinations. The implementation of these methods ...
INTERACTIVE TOURISM MAPPING AND POTENTIAL STUDY OF TOURISM USING GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM
This paper aims to produce a tool for use in decision support tourism, based on GIS applications so that it explains the sites and tourist services, tourism statistics, and other factors that could affect the development of tourism, with the integration of applications that retrieve all the tourist data, prepare a geographic database, tourist sites of Central development region of Nepal. Tourism is probably the only economic sector that provides concrete and quantitative growth in trading opportunities. Therefore, this paper gives a discussion on an initiative for the development and the implementation of GIS in the tourism industry for an important tourist destination of Central development region. This technology integrates common database operations such as queries with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps. GIS is used for bringing the geo-referenced data (spatial and nonspatial) of major tourist destinations into digital maps. Each object is assigned to a thematic layer. Each layer combines related objects like roads, hospitals, hotels, weather information, and major destinations of tourists. In this research, we use GIS in three types of applications such as inventory, analysis, and evaluation of plans based on tourism development.
Tourism Management Perspectives, 2018
Geographical Information Systems are tools that allow a better decision making process, accessing politicians and managers in tourism development and providing integrated touristic information. Furthermore, these are powerful tools for the development of destination marketing strategies. Aveiro web-based Geographical Information System was developed, with the purpose of integrating tourism resources in a common platform. Aveiro region is an important coastal wetland of Portugal that presents unique features which allow the development of a sustainable tourism activity, based on natural and cultural characteristics. Despite the diversified resources, it is observed that the Aveiro region needs a strong improvement regarding tourism development and marketing strategies. In this paper, it will be presented the methodology used for the implementation of the first step of this GIS (inventory of resources and creation of the database) and the potential of this tool for the development of a sustainable tourism marketing strategy.
The impact of GIS application in the tourism development of Elbasan region
2012
This paper provides an initiative for the application of GIS (Geographic Information System) in the tourism industry in Albania. It is applied in Elbasan, which is an important destination in this country for both native and foreign tourists. The application of GIS consists on bringing geo-referenced data of Elbasan region, provided mainly by the District Office, into digitized maps, assigning all objects to thematic layers. The results show that GIS may help to the development of tourism industry in Elbasan region in order to become more competitive not only in Albania but also in the regional and international tourism market.
The Use of Gis Technologies for Creating Tourist Reference Systems
2005
The purpose of this research is to show how to apply GIS technologies to creating information reference systems. The software product Jordan GIS Tourism is presented as a model. This stand-alone system requires Windows 95 or Windows NT and functions without basic instrumental GIS. The proposed GIS includes the following items: Map (options: vector maps, structure of image layers, scaling, printout, selecting single objects or a group of objects by certain characteristics, visualizing the information); Jordan viewed from space (a collection of satellite images); The History of Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (a document in html format); Jordan today (the information on political, economic and social systems, natural resources, working hours of state and commercial establishments, traditions); References (database of mail addresses of state establishments, embassies, telephone directory, transport system); About GIS (how to use the program). The detailed description of GIS functioning i...
