Social movement activism throughout the 1960s and 1970s provided space for feminist concerns in a variety of arenas. Women's movement activism and women's scholarship in history challenged the ways in which women’s experiences had been marginalized or omitted in school history programs and curricula. Women's organizations developed and broadened networks, created and published resources, and lobbied governments and institutions. Their widespread activism spilled into a range of educational circles and influenced history teachers in altering curricula to include women in course materials. Advocating for women, on a curricular or professional development level, however, was complicated because of entrenched neo-liberal systems in place within education institutions. Through the work of Joan Wallach Scott in the 1980s, gender emerged as a useful category of analysis for many historians, in North America and across the world more broadly. Perspectives of Women as Historians: an exploration of women's learning and historical practice

This research emerged from a desire to undertake a feminist exploration of academic debates in History Theory, postgraduate studies in History and the legacy of this learning in historical practice. I have examined the development of historical consciousness, the historicised self and historical scholarship. My research acknowledges an intellectual and historic sisterhood and its associated cUlnulative body of feminist knowledge and practice. This thesis was centred on the stories of a group of women, with whOln I studied postgraduate history at the University of New England in the early 1990s. This research process was largely shaped by feminist poststructural methodologies and incorporates interdisciplinary writings highlighting the alternate ways \ve can examine the past. Influencée à la fois par l'historiographie française, américaine et britannique et préoccupée par des questions spécifiquement québécoises, l'histoire des femmes au Québec s'est développé sous plusieurs facettes pendant les cinq dernières années. Le travail des femmes, la maternité, l'éducation et la politique ont fourni les principaux champs d'étude abordés dans différentes optiques féministes. Le présent article se penche sur cette production historique des dernières années, en souligne les apports les plus originaux et les lacunes qu'il reste à combler.

ABSTRACT. This study examined 20th Century Canadian history textbooks authorized in British Columbia, for their portrayals of women. The texts do not adequately reflect feminist scholarship nor societal changes. The nation building narrative of the textbooks precludes the inclusion of women in important ways. In the interwar years, the women who appear in history textbooks are portrayed as parasitic and weak. In the 1950s to 1970s period inclusion requires royal status or fame as a writer.
