E3S Web of Conferences
Energy access is not only crucial for economic growth but also important for any strategy to improve the health and social welfare of a nation. Afghanistan’s energy industry is in poor condition due to many years of war and negligence. Despite international agencies’ support and energy policies adopted in the last few years, Afghanistan has no universal access to power. Besides, the residences suffer from an irregular distribution of power supply. There is a growing gap between demand and supply, and the current predictions of demand do not show reality due to hindered economic growth. Afghanistan’s domestic power transmission is limited, which must be extended for the country to enjoy a stable and sustainable energy supply. Sustainability and security of Afghanistan’s power sector would rely on its ability to become self-reliant in power generation. Overall, the objective of this paper is to summarize the current energy status of Afghanistan and to identify energy opportunities for...
Energy Scenario of Afghanistan
This paper attempts to review Afghanistan energy scenario with focus on renewable energy sources, energy losses, tariff cost and imported energy from neighboring countries. The study found that the energy scenario in Afghanistan is facing numerous challenges. Afghanistan energy sector is still one of the least development sectors with almost 70% of country population has no access to the electricity. The study shows that though the country has abundant renewable energy sources but its reliance on imported power has increased to almost 80% of its power imported from neighboring countries paying huge cost per year. In rural areas, the level of electrification has not increased. Which necessitates the development of untapped renewable energy sources with specific focus on small hydro power which cost less than imported electricity and is considered, as ultimate solution for electrification of rural areas. The existence of different energy isolated zones and lack of integrated tariff mechanism lead to significant variations in electricity tariff. Energy losses due to poor maintenance, huge overloading of transformers, unmetered supplies with wrong billing are some of the serious challenges discussed in this paper.

Renewable energy potential for sustainable development in Afghanistan
Journal of Sustainable Energy Revolution
Afghanistan is one of the developing countries in South Asia with an enormous renewable and nonrenewable energy resources. Since 1893, utilization of secondary (modern) form of energy in Afghanistan has been pursued. The trends of sustainable energy provision have been reinforced after the post-conflicts in Afghanistan. The Sustainable Development Goal-7 (affordable and clean energy access) encourages nations to assess their resource development of renewable, affordable, and accessible energy. Unlike many developing countries that struggle to identify domestic sources of clean, sustainable energy, Afghanistan has hydro, solar, wind, and geothermal resources as assets. This literature review analyzes Afghanistan's potential for renewable energy to identify obstacles and challenges like security, economics, and technology. Using surveys conducted by national and international organizations. This research evaluates Afghanistan's progress in meeting SDG-7, identifies the main barriers for renewable energy development, and offers recommended solutions. This study reveals the facts of energy sector development in Afghanistan to enable students, researchers, and practitioners with an overview of the current situation and future direction of the energy sector. Also, this study offers a concise outlook for energy sector investors and donors at the national and international stages.

Still, this information somehow has been kept in official documents wrap up. In this collection, the Afghanistan's electricity sector is pictured as a reference for Afghanistan electricity. It can be opening toward primary sources of Afghanistan electricity sector of the lessons learned and asset for researchers interesting in this topic.
An overview of Afghanistan's trends toward renewable and sustainable energies
Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2017
Relentless environmental concerns, steep hike in fossil fuel price, and increasing demand of non-renewable fossil fuels consumption have dramatically increased global search for alternative energies. The world requests ever growing energy supplies to sustain economic development and improvement. Renewable and sustainable energy ever more becoming accepted and established a decisive place in energy system of the word due to ecologicallyresponsiveinsight and a decrease in equipment expenses. Consistent with its endowment of energy resources, each country tried to figure out its own energy portfolio and employing technologies, which are economically viable and socially equitable, and have minimal adverse impacts. This article attempts to review all possible renewable energy sources as a substitute of the current energy profile (coal, natural gas, and petroleum) in Afghanistan. The study found Afghanistan power sector as one of the least development sector which its inadequate status is preventing the development of the country as well. Eventhough, the energy is not the only panacea, but cost effective energies in abundant quantity and quality on sustainable foundation will help to reach to demand socioeconomic development. The results indicate that Afghanistan due to its natural and geographical situations enjoys important prospective for renewable energy bases such as solar, wind, geothermal and micro hydro power. Renewable energies could offer the ultimate solution for Afghanistan in general, and rural areas in actual. But, switch to altered forms of energy is grounded in multifaceted interations. The study indicates number of issues such as great upfront charges, absence of providers, insufficient funding appliances, and feebleindorsed and methodologicalcapability overwhelm and affected the use of renewable energies and technologies in Afghanistan. However, with sufficient investment and practical stages by government, andnongovernment agencies and the public encourage, these unbound sources could play a vital role not only in Afghanistan's energy supply, but also in poverty reduction, social and political stability, and improving living standard.
Afghanistan’s energy potential and economic development
American Journal of Economics and Business Management, 2019
Abstract: Energy shortcoming is one of the major challenges for economic development in Afghanistan and majority of Afghans cut off from energy supply. On the other hand, Afghanistan is considered as one of the richest countries in terms of energy potential in the region. This paper sheds light on Afghanistan’s major energy sources, energy needs and possible outcomes of energy development. The finding of this study shows that despite the big potential of energy production, more than half of total electricity demand in Afghanistan is met by imported electricity. Furthermore, in the overall domestic energy provision, solid biomass is accounted for almost 85% of the energy consumption in the country. The government planned to develop domestic energy from hydropower and thermal resources like oil, coal and gas. Until self-sufficient energy production is attained, the government would continue importing energy from neighboring countries
The renewable energy sector in Afghanistan: Policy and potential
Afghanistan has one of the lowest rates of access to and usage of electricity in the world. Fuelwood, charcoal, agricultural, and animal waste still dominate in meeting energy needs for cooking and heating, with a large percentage of the population using kerosene, candles, and gas for lighting. Yet the situation has changed significantly since the U.S. and coalition combat operations that began at the end of 2001. The period through to the present day has seen a fivefold increase in the electrification rate; agreements with Central Asian countries and Iran for importing electricity; the implementation of thousands of small‐scale renewable energy projects in rural areas; the development and rehabilitation of several large‐scale energy projects; the (partial) development of the institutional, policy, and regulatory landscape; and the expansion of transmission lines and distribution networks. Although accurate information is scarce, Afghanistan has both substantial fossil fuel reserves and renewable energy potential. The country's wind power potential alone looks likely to exceed projected power demand for several decades ahead. Similarly, both the estimated hydropower and solar photovoltaic (PV) potential each exceed projected 2032 power demand. The institutional context of the Afghanistan energy sector is complex, comprising multiple ministries, government agencies, aid agencies, and intergovernmental organizations. Nonetheless, given suitable coordination, the technologies, natural resources, and capabilities are available for transforming the sector and the lives of many people.

Supplying energy demands in Afghanistan is a serious problem, providing demanded energy for consumption is mostly provided by neighboring countries, especially Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Domestic production of energy covers only an only small portion of energy demands in the country. In this regard, the energy supply in this country is extremely vulnerable and indicates non-sustainability. This study was intended to review available conducted research and published articles and reports. the results obtained from these reviews show that the utilization of renewable energy, especially, solar and wind energy, resources in Afghanistan is the only reliable and sustainable solution for the energy problem in this country. The results of the review of the previous research indicate that Afghanistan has great potentials for renewable energy sources. the country has sources of renewable energy, including solar, wind, and geothermal energy.
