The Missing of Moral Entity in Modern Civilization: Values and Social Aspects 1

2012

Modernity and the modernization process are generally accepted as favourable phenomena. While on one side of the coin we see how modernity has greatly benefited mankind in areas of science, technology and economics, the other side of the coin -the costs of modernization -has often been intentionally left unnoticed or put within footnotes as inconvenient afterthoughts. One such thorny issue that has been the source of debate between pro-modernists and anti-modernists is the effect modernization has on the values and social aspects of society. Modernity and morality are deemed to be separate concerns; one can exist without the other, or, as some believe, in place of the other. The dilemma -modernity without morality, or morality without modernity -is one that can be answered through a scrutiny of the values themselves that are held by modern societies. Tradition vs. Modernity : The Continuing Dichotomy of Values in European Society

Revue française de sociologie, 2008

The modernisation theories developed in the 50s and 60s suggested that societies were converging toward modern values, gradually abandoning their traditional values. This convergence idea is reexamined in the following article within the context of European countries and on the basis of processed Values surveys. A set of attitude scales was constructed and then analysed through multivariate techniques. Two main results emerge from this analysis. First, it appears that, regardless of date and country, the Europeans' values are still structured around a traditionalism axis. This result obviously contradicts the theories of convergence towards modernity, theories that are strongly criticised. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the counterpart of traditionalism-need it be called "modernity"?-and on the relations between economic and moral attitudes. Second, religiosity is strongly linked to this structuring of values but it mainly opposes European members of whatever religious denomination to non-members, rather than-as is often imagined-Catholics to Protestants. All in all, the tension between tradition and modernity remains at the core of the value system of European societies.

Value Change in Western European Societies: Results from the European Values Study

関西学院大学社会学部紀要, 2009

According to contemporary modernization theories, Western and thus European societies are gradually transforming as a result of growing individualization, secularization, and globalization. Key issues in these transformation processes are the de-traditionalization and heterogenization of people's values. Analyses of the survey data from the European Values Study in 1981, 1990 and 1999 do not yield much evidence of vast changes. The trends appear not very substantive and seem to reveal gradual and rather slow changes in various directions. Which direction the course of changes takes depends upon the particular issue at stake. All in all it must be concluded that the answer to the question of what has happened to European values can be answered in two words: not much.

Morality and moral values as personalization of modern society

2020

Moral values are the basis for the functioning of every society. The criteria of good and bad, as essential elements of moral consciousness, are built through the life and experience of many generations as shared values for the whole society. In states that qualify as free, democratic, and legal, which do not recognize state religion and have a plurality of religious and ideological values, particular emphasis is placed on the need for a rationally based morality. To perceive people's beliefs about good and bad in society represents a challenge. This challenge is especially intriguing for a society like ours, which has undergone serious changes in the political, economic, and cultural segments. The subjective feeling that something is happening with the moral value system in our country has been around for a long time. Unfortunately, subjective feeling is that moral values barely exist. Practically, the main purpose of this paper is precisely to examine the moral values of individuals by applying appropriate methodological procedures and to understand the moral attitudes of a group of persons. Also, in this paper the questions of what morality is and what the moral values of a society depend on will be elaborated. To achieve the purpose of this research, the historical and sociological methods will be applied, as well as the survey and the method of content analysis.

Values and Morals in Contemporary Society: Role in Various Domains

Galore International Journal of Applied Sciences and Humanities

Values are internalised cognitive frameworks that help people make decisions by instilling a feeling of fundamental moral standards, a sense of priorities, and a propensity to interpret the world and recognise patterns. Values can be investigated at the individual or group level, just like other cognitive structures. To put it another way, societies, cultures, and other social groups have values-based norms, priorities, and rules that specify what people should do in order to act in a proper, moral or valued way. Currently, the study of values is more specifically concerned with the situations in which values influence behaviour. In doing so, the study elaborates on the ramifications of creating value education in various domains. Keywords: Contemporary Society, Values, Value and Society, Value and Education, Societal Domains.

Young and Ambivalent. A New Look at the Recent Rise of European Values, Their History, Precursors and Critics

Marie Göbel and Andreas Niederberger (eds.), Cosmopolitan Norms and European Values. Ethical Perspectives on Europe’s Refugee Policy (New York: Routledge 2024) 61-87. , 2023

It is often assumed that European values have been an essential and clearly defined part of the project of European integration since its inception in the 1950s. This chapter argues instead that only recently – from the late 1990s onwards – European institutions increasingly started to refer to “European values”, precisely because these values lack a clear and substantial content. Moreover, the chapter shows that when values were invoked at all before the 1990s, they were mostly invoked by Christian politicians in a conservative sense which differs from its current widespread liberal and secular use by European institutions. It is then explained why, at the turn of the century, these institutions increasingly invoked “European values” (in part because more ambitious alternatives proved less successful) and how this recent liberal version of “European values” was challenged by a populist interpretation of these values, notably in the context of the “refugee crisis”. The chapter then also shows how the liberal nature of European values is criticised by the left and how the emphasis on European values reveals doubts about Europe’s place in the world. Finally, the chapter argues that the lack of conceptual clarity of these values should not be seen as a problem.

‘Ethics Of Values’ and Its Significance in Society: A Christian Perspective

Ghana Journal of Religion and Theology, 2023

The ethics of values is a specialized area of meta-ethics that emphasises the concept of good in society. It is often contrasted with the ethics of duty, and it is an area that has been neglected in recent times due to a poor index of awareness and application. This underscores the significance of this work. Values are central to human lives and civilisation. Consequently, the question: "What values should I seek or apply to a situation?" is more relevant than "What is it that is right for me to do?" in contemporary society. The researcher was motivated by these differences and also the need to place the ethics of values in its proper perspective. Therefore, the paper roots its thesis on the works of Hartmann, Perry, and Peschke including the ethical insights from John Paul II. The study approaches the subject from its theories, nature, types, and significance in society. The paper is based on Christian ethics, and it also applies phenomenology to analyse and discuss the subject. The analysis reveals that some persons are more interested in the rationalization of duty than the actual application of ethics and values to society. The latter, unarguably, is germane to fostering societal moral rectitude.
