A Simple Chronology of Greek Mythology -First Draft

Methodology: Over 2000 year ago, Herodotus described a method of chronology of counting a large number of generations, and assigning a number of years to it: "Agron son the sovereignty from these and held it, because of an oracle; and they ruled for twenty-two generations, or five hundred and five years, son succeeding father, down to Candaules son of Myrsus."-Herodotus Histories 1.7.4 505 years / 22 generations = 23 years per generation. I like that number and have derived and expanded my methodology from this approach. This general approach is called "Eldest Son Theory", where kingship is often passed on from father to son. This theory says that the average king sires his eldest son at 23 years old, and lives to about 53. The average king will start his reign around 30 and rule until he dies at 53. Then his son will on average do the same, and outlive his father by 23 years. This methodology from its simplistic description above, certainly sounds inaccurate and like it would have a lot of problems. For instance, what if a king dies at 40 or 60? How would that impact his son? What if a king takes charge at 20 instead of 30? This is a statistical model of approximation with obvious deficiencies and potentially large individual margin of errors. And we will study those. However, if a father lives and reigns until 58(28 years)(5 extra years), and his son takes the reigns at 35 instead of 30… then his son still dies at 53 with a reign of 18 years(5 fewer years). So living longer or shorter is not a problem. This is a classic fence-post problem. The model self-corrects over time. Validating the Methodology: I have chosen to validate this methodology against Egypt, starting with the 18 th dynasty. I could have chosen Assyria or Babylon or Israel; I have validated those as well. They are not included in this paper. For Egypt, I accept the standard chronology which numerous Egyptologists have dedicated hundreds of man years to create, with thousands of radiocarbon dates to validate. Here are 67 generations of Pharoahs, encomapassing over 1500 years to validate the Methodology against:

CHRONOLOGY OF GREEK LEGENDS AND MITHS

CHRONOLOGY OF GREEK LEGANDS AND MITHS, 2023

Greek mythology is the set of cultural myths and legends of Ancient Greece, in which there is the intention to explain the origin and nature of the world, the creator gods, their adventures and their multiple interventions in the lives of humans, as well as the worship of the same gods that gave rise to a religion. In this mythology, the gods engender with humans' peoples, nations and heroes. The heroes are protected by the creator gods and aided in their many feats. Thus arises a whole series of stories and legends about adventures, extraordinary journeys, wars, intrigues and tragedies with the participation of gods and heroes that constitute the source of poems, songs, literature and plays of Ancient Greece. It is interesting to note that there is a sequential chronology that is clearly seen between the accounts of the voyage of the Argonauts and that of the Trojan War, since the characters who participate in Troy are descendants (sons) of those who traveled on the Argo. This could indicate an ingenious argument by the creator of the stories or perhaps a hint of historicity, which becomes more likely with the discovery of the ruins of Troy at the end of the 19th century on the hill of Hissarlik, Turkey, with evidence of destruction and fire possibly caused by war, so these stories may contain a real historical background. The purpose of this essay is to propose a chronology to the myths and legends of the epic or heroic age of the ancient Greeks, accepting that some stories are fictitious, and others, perhaps historical, but exaggerated or embellished by popular tradition, the bards and playwrights of ancient Greece. It is important to clarify that the chronology proposed here is based on the date of destruction of Homeric Troy in 1250 BC. according to the historian Herodotus.
