An Assessment System on the Semantic Web

This paper presents a way to develop a modern assessment system on the Semantic Web. The system is based on the IMS QTI standard (question and test interoperability) and designed by applying the model driven architecture software engineering standards. It uses the XML meta-data interchange specification and ontologies. We propose the framework for assessment systems that is reusable, extensible, and that facilitates interoperability between its component systems. The central idea here is using description logic reasoning techniques for intelligent analysis of students’ solutions of the problems they are working on during assessment sessions with the system, in order to process open-ended questions. This innovative approach can be applied in the IMS QTI standard.

In light of trends toward increased requirements for skilled workers, e-assessment presents many challenges. It should address learners' real performance in life. Recognizing the inadequacy of current traditional knowledge-based assessment systems in higher education to achieve performance visibility, we need to rethink how we design new assessment systems that can respond to the corporate requirements of the twenty-first century and mirror the learners' competences. This concern has not been sufficiently investigated. This chapter considers the competence-based assessment. The authors explore the importance of competency and competence modeling conceptual understanding. The research reviews the benchmark literature on the concepts, models, and approaches of competence and competency and explores the confusion surrounding the pair of concepts. The semantic web is an extension of the traditional web by introducing the meaning of the data and it adds new functionalities to machines which become able to understand and process the data, whereas now it simply displays the profile. The activities of selection, contextualization and rendering of unstructured content can’t be obtained from any computer. In other words, the information is readable but not understandable by the machine in order to make the meaning of the data web understandable by the computer, the data are combined with meta-information describing this content. Could the adoption of a forum in a semantic learning environment clear the way for the evaluation of learning that reflects a knowledge management in new ways?

Practical experiences for the development of educational sys-tems in the semantic web

Semantic Web technologies have been applied in educational settings for different purposes in recent years, with the type of application being mainly defined by the way in which knowledge is represented and exploited. The basic technology for knowledge representation in Semantic Web settings is the ontology, which represents a common, shareable and reusable view of a particular application domain. Ontologies can support different activities in educational settings such as organizing course contents, classifying learning objects or assessing learning levels. Consequently, ontologies can become a very useful tool from a pedagogical perspective. This paper focuses on two different experiences where Semantic Web technologies are used in educational settings, the difference between them lying in how knowledge is obtained and represented. On the one hand, the OeLE platform uses ontologies as a support for assessment processes. Such ontologies have to be designed and implemented in semantic languages apt to be used by OeLE. On the other hand, the ENSEMBLE project pursues the development of semantic web applications by creating specific knowledge representations drawn from user needs. Our paper is consequently going to offer an in-depth analysis of the role played by ontologies, showing how they can be used in different ways drawing a comparison between model patterns and examining the ways in which they can complement each other as well as their practical implications
