Background The sense of coherence is as focused on one’s awareness of the level of pervasive, enduring, and dynamic feelings. Stronger sense of coherence leads to better physical and mental health and promotes recovery from life stressors. Sense of coherence-13 (SOC-13) is a 13-item valid and reliable measure for individual’s healthy living. However, the factor structure of SOC-13 was criticized in several cultures and languages. The current study was set to explore the factor structure of an Arabic adaptation for SOC-13. Methods This cross-sectional study of the SOC-13 included (n = 1235) Arabic speaking individuals. We used confirmatory factor analysis to contrast unidimensional, bidimensional, three-dimensional, and four-dimensional factor structure for the SOC-13. We carried out measurement invariance analysis across age and gender groups to examine the stability of fit indices among participants’ subgroups. Results We found the reliability coefficient to be 0.82, indicative of ...
Validation of Sense of Coherence (SOC) 13-item scale in Iranian sample
Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2010
Objective: The aim of the present study was to test the reliability and validity of Farsi version of the Sense of Coherence 13-item scale (SOC; Antonovsky 1987) in Iranian sample. Methods: participants completed Farsi SOC 13-item scale and Hardiness 45item scale (kobasa, Maddi, and Kahn, 1982; Bartone, 1991; Besharat, 2008). Data from a cross-sectional study with a sample of 375 undergraduate students, (137 males and 238 females), age 18-24, were analyzed. Results: Test of internal consistency of the SOC-13, revealed that all 13 items are highly correlated with total score. The Cronbach's alpha for the inventory was 0.77. The alpha for the males was 0.75, and for females was 0.78. The correlation between SOC 13-item scale and Hardiness 45-item scale was significant (r=0.54, p<0.01). A re-test after 6-8 weeks showed a significant correlation (r = 0.66, p > 0.01) between test and re-test scores. Statistical significant correlation were observed between subscales score and total score (Meaningfulness r=0.76, Comprehensibility r=0.86, Manageability r=0.81). Factor analysis extracted four factors with an eigenvalue of greater than 1 that could explain 53.49% of the total variance. Conclusion: The results confirmed the reliability and validity of Sense of Coherence 13-item scale (Farsi version) in Iranian population.
The purpose of this study is to investigate validity and reliability of Short Form of The Family Sense of Coherence Scale’s which was developed originally 26 items by Antonovsky and Sourani (1988) and 12 items short form by Sagy (1998). The scale measures individuals’ perception of Family Sense of Coherence and it can be applied to adolescents and adults. The sample was consisted of 328 female (58%) and 234 male (42%), totally 562 undergraduate students who attend Education Faculty, Cukurova University. After translating the FSOC into Turkish, exploratory factor analysis was performed on samples of undergraduate students. In addition item analyses, convergent, divergent scales validity and test-re test, Cronbach alpha coefficient reliability were examined. The results have shown that Short form of Turkish Family Sense of Coherence Scale has satisfactory reliability and validity.
Validity of Antonovsky's sense of coherence scale: a systematic review
Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, 2005
The aim of this paper is to systematically review and analyse the validity and reliability of Antonovsky's life orientation questionnaire/sense of coherence scale (SOC). Design: The study is descriptive and analytical with a systematic integration of the contemporary knowledge base on the salutogenic research published 1992-2003. The review includes 458 scientific publications and 13 doctoral theses. Setting: Worldwide, based on postgraduate scientific publications in eight authorised databases, doctoral theses, and available books. Main results: The SOC questionnaire has been used in at least 33 languages in 32 countries with at least 15 different versions of the questionnaire. In 124 studies using SOC-29 the Cronbach's a ranges from 0.70 to 0.95. The a values in 127 studies using SOC-13 range from 0.70 to 0.92, and in 60 studies using a modified SOC scale range from 0.35 to 0.91. Test-retest correlation show stability and range from 0.69 to 0.78 (1 year), 0.64 (3 years), 0.42 to 0.45 (4 years), 0.59 to 0.67 (5 years) to 0.54 (10 years). The means of SOC-29 range 100.50 (SD 28.50) to 164.50 (SD 17.10) points and SOC-13 from 35.39 (SD 0.10) to 77.60 (SD 13.80) points. After 10 years SOC seems to be comparatively stable, but not as stable as Antonovsky initially assumed. SOC tends to increase with age. The factorial structure of SOC seems rather to be multidimensional than unidimensional. SOC predicts a positive outcome in a long term perspective, although there are divergent findings reported. The SOC scale seems to be a reliable, valid, and cross culturally applicable instrument measuring how people manage stressful situations and stay well.
The Factor Structure and Reliability of a Six-Item Sense of Coherence Measure
Journal of Psychology in Africa, 2012
The study investigated the factor structure and reliability of a six-item sense of coherence (SOC) measure. Participants were a South African white collar employee sample (n=7185) purposively selected from over 300 different companies across various business sectors. The sample constituted 34% male and 66% female and 34% Black, 18% Coloured, 11% Indian and 37% White employees. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used for the structural analysis. The reliability of the scores was also estimated. A one-dimensional structure seemed to best represent the six-item SOC measure. The internal reliability of the scores from the measure was high.
The Revised Arabic Schwartz Outcome Scale-10 (SOS-10-AR)
Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2020
This study presents the Revised Arabic Schwartz Outcome Scale-10 (Blais et al., 1999). Data collected from Arabic and English speakers residing in the United States (n ¼ 152) and international Arabic speakers (n ¼ 423) provided robust psychometric support for the instrument's use to measure Arabic speakers' mental health outcomes.
A simplified way of measuring sense of coherence
The European Journal of Public Health, 1995
Antonovsky's concept sense of coherence (SOC) has gained much attention during the last few years as an important factor in the understanding of social factors behind health and illness. The questionnaire developed to measure SOC may, however, for practical reasons be difficult to use. In a recently conducted population survey in Sweden, we were faced with the problem of incorporating the ideas behind SOC without being able to include the 29-ttem instrument. Instead, 3 questions were constructed in order to capture each of the 3 dimensions included in SOC, namely manageability, meaningfulness and comprehensibiltty. In this research note we present our simplified version of SOC and the properties of the measure obtained. We conclude that the simplified measure we have suggested might be a useful substitute for the original scale, especially in cases where information on SOC would otherwise have been totally omitted.
Short Form of the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-L9) in the US, Germany, and Russia
European Journal of Psychological Assessment
Validation of a 9-item version of the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-L9) and testing its cross-national measurement invariance and latent mean differences in representative samples from the United States of America (US), Germany, and Russia. The psychometric properties of the SOC-L9 were tested with representative samples aged 18-100 years from the US (N = 2,972), Germany (N = 2,005), and Russia (N = 2,726). Both a model with a general factor and method effect of items with negative wording and a unidimensional model were tested for structure validity. Measurement equivalence and latent mean comparisons were conducted across the samples. The SOC-L9 showed good reliability and validity in all countries. Rather than the unidimensional model, the model with additional method effect showed excellent fit across countries. Cross-national measurement invariance testing found partial strong measurement invariance across the three samples. The latent means of the SOC-L9 in the US sample were higher than those in German and Russian samples. The SOC-L9 has proved to be economic, valid, reliable, and cross-nationally applicable in the US, Germany, and Russia. Meaningful differences across countries were found, suggesting the importance of taking cultural background into account in SOC-related research.
Evaluation of Psychometric Properties of the ‘Sense of Coherence Scale’ in Schoolchildren
Interamerican Journal of Psychology, 2020
The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of Sense of Coherence scale (SOC-13) in schoolchildren. This is a cross-sectional study that included eight to fourteen years-old schoolchildren. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for SOC-13 measurement presented questionable results (0.63) and the Intra-Class Correlation Coefficient of 0.70 was statistically significant between different time points (p<0.01). Regarding the construct validity, significant values were observed between the SOC-13 components scores and the overall scale score. In the Confirmatory Factorial Analysis, the latent variable was related, through the standard factorial loads, to the other items of the questionnaire. We can conclude that the Brazilian version of SOC-13 showed adequate psychometric properties in a school-age population.
DISORDER OF THE TEXT GRAMMAR THEORY'S STANDARDS IN ARABIC: COHERENCE & COHESION TERMS
Over the last two decades, the study of the Arabic language and literature has gained a lot of impetus, with Arab researchers benefitting from Western linguistics. Perhaps the most important of these studies is Text Grammar Theory that saw the development of an integrated approach to the study and analysis of text, and also goes beyond the limitations of the sentence grammar. Several studies have been carried out on various texts that include poetry, literary prose of the novel, and the Holly Qur'an. With increased attention focussing on the theory standards and applications, a disorder of Arabization of the theory terms has been expanded and translations of its standards varied. This has resulted in some very obvious concepts confusion. This study aims to discuss and determine multiple Arabic translations of the theory's most important text standards, namely Coherence & Cohesion that result in disagreements within recent Arabic linguistic studies. This disagreement is unacceptable, especially when it comes to the Holly Qur'an. To review the translations of the two standards, the researchers have adopted a descriptive analytical method as well as a deductive approach. The importance of this study is limited to standardizing the Arabic linguistic terms and framing its concepts. A survey on the most recognized Arabic linguistic studies shows that Cohesion is denoted by eight terms, while Coherence is denoted by 10. The study also suggests that the terms (al-sabek and al-hubek(والحبك السبك are the best translations because they spread widely and have clear indications. It can also be said that the reason for the disorder is that some researchers avoid rooting the mentioned terms. This study stresses on creating a function to standardize Arabic terminology and linguistic framing. This has emphasized the popularity of USIM's combination of Naqli and Aqli sciences' framework.
