Current Trends in Critical Discourse Analyses of Textbooks: A Look at Selected Literature
Canadian Journal of Applied Linguistics, 2022
Critical discourse analysis (CDA) has increasingly served to examine the content of textbooks. Given momentum by critical social inquiry pertaining to textbook content, this study looks at peer-reviewed literature drawn from three scholarly databases (JSTOR, ERIC, and SAGE; cross-referenced with searches on Google Scholar) that use critical discourse analysis for those investigations. Reviewing the selected literature, this study asks: What are the most represented approaches of CDA used for examining textbooks? What contextual themes appear to draw the most attention? In what fields of study are the examined textbooks situated? How do these emergent themes appear to be connected? What areas of research appear lacking in the collected literature? The findings illustrate that, while the methods of CDA and types of textbooks examined are diverse, the lion’s share of contextual attention and critical utility appear to be given to foundational approaches to CDA and textbooks used for En...

Ideology in English Textbooks: A Case Study of Matric Level Books in Punjab
Research on Humanities and Social Sciences, 2013
In many nations debates over the content and format of school textbooks are sites of educational and political conflict. The research argues that school textbook knowledge is socially constructed and textbook contents are manufactured by powerful groups according to their ideological vision. The research covers four dimensions firstly the selection of material and their thematic sequence in the textbooks present Islam not simply as a belief system but a political ideology that must be accepted by all citizens.Secondly; the textbooks offer a biased treatment of non-Muslim citizens in Pakistan, thirdly; the vocabulary in the textbooks underscores Islamic teaching as Hajj, Zakat ,prayers, and little is mentioned about critical thinking, civic participation, or democratic values of freedom of speech, equality, and respect for cultural and religious diversity.
This paper examines the cultural values, beliefs and ideology constructed through Pakistan Studies textbook, published by Sindh Text Book Board, currently used for secondary education in the Government sector in Pakistan. The study aims to critically analyze how discourses are created and what ideologies are embedded in them in the form of textbooks. The paper also analyzes how texts are manipulated in the public education sector to portray certain cultural forces, beliefs and values for the young reader and how these discourses in turn position the learner to go through the way these discourses are developed. The paper states that such discourses are contrary to the young learner's interests and serve the interests of the powerful elite.
Comparative Study of Socio-Ideological Practices in English Textbooks in Pakistani Context
2020
pISSN: 2521-2982 The present study is an effort to examine and compare the way socio-ideological practices are projected in the Oxford English Textbook Grade 5 and the English Textbook 5 published by the Punjab (Pakistan) Textbook Board (PTB) prescribed for the government, semi-government and private schools of the Punjab province. The content analysis was employed to find out the percentages of categories and subcategories of reading passages and exercises of the prescribed English textbooks. Socio-Ideological statements were analyzed through the representation of patriotic values and gender roles in the context of local and foreign EFL textbooks. The research findings and results make it visible from the current instructional materials or prescribed English textbooks that the Oxford English textbook is superficial and shallow with respect to its treatment of the target (Pakistani) culture. The textbook is therefore inadequate to the task of teaching and transmitting socio-ideologi...
A Critical Discourse Analysis of Vision Textbooks: Representation of Social Relations and Ideology
Alzahra University, 2023
Considering the importance of the textbooks within the field of ELT, EFL textbooks should be subjected to for their suitability. Therefore, this article compared three dimensions of meaning (i.e., contents, subject positions, and social relations) in the conversations of the three volumes of the Vision textbook series developed by Iranian educational system. To this end, the theory and procedures of critical discourse analysis, as expounded by Fairclough (1989), were applied to the corpus of the study. The analysis into the dimension of contents revealed that the focus of material developers was more on the topics of everyday and school issues. The analysis into subject positions demonstrated that the material developers had focused more on the student character, with a tinge of gender inequality. The analysis into social relations disclosed their focus on the family and school life relationships for older students, tending to depict male supremacy. Besides, it was revealed that the ideology of Iran centrism had been underscored in the three textbooks thereby focusing on the issue of localization. Finally, two semi-structured interviews were conducted with two material developers of Vision series, which corroborated the CDA results. The findings of this study may have implications for language teachers and material developers
Ideology and Hegemony of English Foreign Language Textbooks
International Journal of Literacy, Culture, and Language Education
The collaborative work of two scholars, Ömer Gökhan Ulum from Mersin University and Dinçay Köksal from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, brings a stimulating and refreshing addition to the field of Applied Linguistics of a critical analysis of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks. The book is a dissertation project turned into a monograph by the authors. Accordingly, it follows the structure of a dissertation, divided into seven chapters including Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Data Analysis, Findings and Interpretations, Discussion and Conclusions, and Implications. I would highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the growing field of textbook evaluation as well as to all EFL pre-and in-service teachers, university students, Ministries of Education and publishing houses who must know the impact of ideological and hegemonic practices exercised in and through textbooks. Chapter 1, Introduction, summarizes the information by stating the major aim and significance of the study. By emphasizing the practical role of textbooks in EFL contexts, the authors raise the issue of "hidden agendas" in textbooks that impose certain ideologies and hegemonic beliefs on language learners. The authors identify the absence of involvement of students and teachers in their analysis of ideologies and hegemonies practiced in EFL textbooks. Accordingly, the study attempts to unravel not only the ideologies and hegemonies implicit in the textbooks, but also neglected and undermined ideologies uncovered in the content by interviewing the teachers and the students who use those textbooks. The study aims to investigate the ideologies, value orientations, and hegemonic practices prevailing in globally and locally produced EFL textbooks. The thrust of the study also stems from the research gap the researchers found while reviewing the related literature. The adopted theoretical framework is critical theory, drawn from poststructuralism. The rationale behind their choice, as they state, is "post-structuralism underlines the heterogeneity of the text as well as its political and ideological aspects" (p. 7). Therefore, in the following Literature Review chapter, they review the concepts, elucidating the notions of ideology and hegemony from many perspectives, including politics.

This investigation aims to decode the implicit ideologies in the chosen images and their function to support the process of getting an education in the Primary English Textbook (SNC2020) of grades (1-3) from the academic year . This is qualitative research, data collected from the Primary English Textbook (SNC-2020) of grades (1-3). The latent qualitative content analysis under Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) by (Machin & Mayer, 2012) decodes the illustrations. The findings reveal various Pakistani Cultural and Ethical themes and ideologies such as Studious Attitude at Home and Culture, Sharing and Creative Art, Assisting Elders with a Good Attitude, Pakistani Family Culture, Good and Bad Manners, Intellectual Mother and Ethical Education of a Child, Conversation Manner and Costume Culture, Home Culture and Intellectual Activities and Scheduled Routine of a Child. Moreover, the children are displayed in a proper posture while studying, and this teaches them the manner to sit and study. The children are involved in the creative art of making the card, and they write on it. This gives them the idea to enjoy along with studying. Thus, the socio-linguistic assessment is used to design an instructor's training program and aid curriculum designers in improving the shortcomings in the textbooks.
The present study attempts to investigate the three facets of meaning namely Subject positions, social relations, and contents through critical discourse analysis in English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks in Iran based on Fairclough’s (2001) framework. In order to investigate the frequency of these facets of meaning the conversations of two series of textbooks in Bahar and Navid Language Institutes (two famous Institutes in Shiraz, Iran) were selected to figure out the ideology behind these series of textbooks. To investigate subject positions, social relations, and contents, Fairclough’s (2001) framework was used. Results indicated that, educational and friends related positions were abundant in Navid and Bahar Language Institutes respectively. In both series of textbooks social relations were more or less equal. Content analysis of conversations revealed that the conversations were almost pertained to friendship, sports, and traveling issues. Through the analysis of audio, setting of conversations, tone and intonation in the conversations, it was revealed that the language in the conversations of these two series of textbooks was along with the western culture and ideology. It was concluded that the chosen textbooks had a particular discourse type specifically western ideology and this study was hoped to bring about some degrees of consciousness among people involved in language teaching by rejecting this idea that language textbooks are value free. The study implicated that attempts should be made by text users to acquire a threshold level in critical language awareness in order to understand the central role language can play in structuring human mind.
