In most assembly lines in manufacturing industry and service occupations, employees may experience pain and discomfort associated with long periods of standing. Prolonged standing tasks in manufacturing industry may lead to musculoskeletal disorders including pain, increased fatigue and stiffness in active muscles. The aims of this study are to determine subjective fatigue experienced by male Malaysian operators in metal stamping industry, and assess muscle fatigue in their lower extremities. Ten production operators of the industry participated in the study. Muscle fatigue has been analyzed using surface electromyography (sEMG) whereby six muscles such as left and right erector spinae muscles, left and right tibialis anterior muscles, and left and right gastrocnemius muscles were simultaneously measured. On the other hand, the subjective fatigue was assessed through questionnaire surveys. Results of questionnaire surveys found that all operators involved in the study reported that they experienced muscle fatigue due to prolonged standing tasks. Result obtained from sEMG measurement shows similar trend with the conclusion derived from surveys. Workers who experienced fatigue recorded a decreased average mean.
Assessment of Muscle Fatigue Associated with Prolonged Standing in the Workplace

The objectives of this study were to determine the psychological fatigue and analyze muscle activity of production workers who are performing processes jobs while standing for prolonged time periods. Methods: The psychological fatigue experienced by the workers was obtained through questionnaire surveys. Meanwhile, muscle activity has been analyzed using surface electromyography (sEMG) measurement. Lower extremities muscles include: erector spinae, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius were concurrently measured for more than five hours of standing. Twenty male production workers in a metal stamping company participated as subjects in this study. The subjects were required to undergo questionnaire surveys and sEMG measurement. Results: Results of the questionnaire surveys found that all subjects experienced psychological fatigue due to prolonged standing jobs. Similarly, muscle fatigue has been identified through sEMG measurement. Based on the non-parametric statistical test using the Spearman's rank order correlation, the left erector spinae obtained a moderate positive correlation and statistically significant (r s = 0.552, p < 0.05) between the results of questionnaire surveys and sEMG measurement. Conclusion: Based on this study, the authors concluded that prolonged standing was contributed to psychological fatigue and to muscle fatigue among the production workers.

IRJET-Ergonomically Analysis the Moderate Work for determining The rest period
Ergonomics is the study of human comfort and the relaxation from the exertion. In this paper a Basal Metabolism Methodology was used to reduce workload and improve the working conditions by providing proper rest breaks. The study was conducted in workshop on three females and seven males who are asked to perform the shovelling operation. The results indicate that rest period is very important in keeping the body healthy and to avoid musculoskeletal disorder of the body. The main objective of this study is to analyse the rest periods for the persons having varying physical properties. The metabolism is a process which converts food into the chemical energy and basal metabolism deals with the physical activities of a person when he is lying empty stomach and the calories spent is known as leisure calories.
Analysis of Time-to-Fatigue for Standing Jobs in Metal Stamping Industry

In metal stamping industry, almost all jobs are practically to be performed in standing position. Standing in a long period of time can lead to muscle fatigue. The objective of this study was to determine time-to-fatigue in the erector spinae, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius muscles of twenty production workers in a metal stamping company. The muscles activity was concurrently measured using surface electromyography (sEMG) during beginning, mid, and end of working sessions. Results of study found that gastrocnemius muscle fatigued earlier during all working sessions. In addition, working at the end of working session showed earlier fatigue than the beginning and mid of work days. The study concluded that standing in a long period of time is a cause to muscle fatigue experienced by the production workers.
A Study on Muscle Fatigue Associated with Awkward Posture among Workers in Aerospace Industry

In aerospace industry, many tasks required manufacturing workers to perform their works in awkward posture. Awkward posture is a practical working posture when joints are not in neutral position such as lifting heavy products, reaching materials, bending forward their back when doing jobs, and pushing or pulling excessive loads because those tasks require a stable position and large degree of freedom. Ten female participants performed work at a video display terminal (VDT) station over a whole working day. Subjective local muscular fatigue was evaluated by means of the Category Ratio 10 scale. Electromyographic activity of the upper right and left trapezius was measured. A comparison was made between five participants who had previous complaints and 5 participants who reported no musculoskeletal problems in the shoulder-neck region. The subjective scores for the shoulder differed significantly between the two groups, being higher for the group with complaints. Both groups showed a decrease in discomfort after the lunch break. The activity of the trapezius increased significantly for both groups, in a more pronounced way for the group with disorders. Impact of Exercise and Ergonomics on the Perception of Fatigue in Workers: A Pilot Study

The supervised implementation of psychophysiological recovery breaks and physical exercise in the workplace can be motivational factors for employees to be productive and remain for a longer time at work. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether ergonomic conditions (including rest breaks) and exercise programs can reduce fatigue before, during and after work hours. Twenty participants, age range: 31-48 years, were divided into four groups: 1) Exercise with rest breaks (n=5); 2) Exercise without rest breaks (n=5); 3) No exercise with rest breaks (n=5), 4). No exercise without rest breaks (n=5). The exercise group performed physical training, including resistance exercises, stretching and aerobic exercises for 4 weeks. The rest break was performed for 10 minutes and both exercise and rest were developed in the work place. To determine the fatigue effects on each intervention group, surveys with a 10-point Borg scale were used. In general, participants that conducted exercise program (1 and 2) showed less fatigue compared with those that did not perform the program (3 and 4), principally in the times during and after work hours (P < 0.03). This pilot study demonstrated that exercise programs may help to reduce fatigue during and after work hours.
