Relationship between Parenting Style and Children's Behavior Problems

Asian Social Science, 2011

In the family, parenting style directly impacts children's behavior and symptoms of behavior. There is ample evidence to support the correlation between parenting style and children's behavioral problems. However, parenting style and children's behavioral problems have received little attention and research interest in Iran. Therefore, the current research is deemed necessary and timely. Thus, the major purpose of this current study is to investigate the relationship between parenting style and children's behavioral problems. Parenting styles (Authoritative, Permissive, and Authoritarian) were assessed by Parent Authority Questioner (PAQ) and children's behavioral problems (internalizing and externalizing symptoms) were assessed with the Children's Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Respondents comprised 681 mothers of children in primary school (347girls and 334 boys) who were identified through their children selected by cluster sampling in the Iranian capital of Tehran. The results of the present study indicate that there is a significant correlation between Authoritative and internalizing (r= -.32, p<.001) externalizing (r= -.28, p<.001), Permissive and internalizing (r= .12, p<.001), externalizing (r= .12, p<.001), Authoritarian and internalizing (r= .25, p<.001), externalizing (r= .26, p<.001). In conclusion Authoritative parenting style with high responsiveness and high demanding in parenting behavior has shown to be directly related to less children's internalizing and externalizing symptoms.

Influence of Parenting Style on Children’s Behaviour

Journal of Education and Educational Development, 2016

This research determined the influence of parents and their parenting styles on children’s behavior. The author examined different parenting styles to understand which style leads the children to be juvenile delinquent, that ultimately makes the children low academic achievers. In this paper, the researcher attempts to bring an original contribution through the identification of what is missing in the literature thus offering recommendations for future research on the role of parents in shaping the future of their children. Much research has been done on the role of parents in shaping the future of their children; however, more comprehensive research needs to be conducted on the role of parents and different parenting styles on their children’s behavior. A qualitative paradigm was preffered using in-depth interviews with two mothers of children with delinquent behavior. The findings revealed that authoritarian parenting style leads the children to become rebellious and adopt problematic behavior due tomore than necessary power exercised on children by parents. In contrast, authoritative parenting style is effective for children, as it encourages moderate parenting style. There is a demonstrated need reported in the literature that parents who spend maximum time with their children reduce the probability of developing delinquent behavior among their children. Spending more time together with the adolescents reciprocate through reducing their problematic behaviors. This study is based on a limited data and refers to the experience of only two mothers.

Relationship between Perceived Parenting Styles and Behavior Problems among School Age Children

2016

In the family, parenting style directly affects children's behavior. Few researches supported the correlation between parenting style and children's behavioral problems. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between perceived parenting style and behavior problems among school age children. A Descriptive correlational design was used to achieve the purpose of this study. Setting: primary schools in Qaliubiya Governorate, which are affiliated to the Ministry of Education. Subject: Multistage random sample of 600 students were selected from primary schools in Qaliubiya Governorate. Instruments of data collection: Two instruments were used; one instrument was used to assess perceived parenting styles. Another instrument was used to assess behavior problems among school age children. Results: Lying was highly present between 32.3% of children, harassment and teasing was moderately present between 31.2% of them and stealing was moderately found between 27% of children. There was highly significant negative correlation between parents' total parenting style pattern and behavior problems among students at p < 0.0001. Conclusion: The most commonly perceived parenting styles were acceptance, tolerance, equilibrium, caring and equality were negatively correlated with harassment, rebellion and disobedience, lying, aggression, stealing and truancy. Neglectful parenting is correlated with sharp increases in children's behavior problems. Recommendations: The study recommended that educational program should be given to the parents focused on providing acceptance, tolerance, equilibrium, caring and equality when dealing with children.

The Role of Parenting Styles in Children's Problem Behavior

This study investigated the combination of mothers' and fathers' parenting styles (affection, behavioral control, and psychological control) that would be most influential in predicting their children's internal and external problem behaviors. A total of 196 children (aged 5 -6 years) were followed up six times from kindergarten to the second grade to measure their problem behaviors. Mothers and fathers filled in a questionnaire measuring their parenting styles once every year. The results showed that a high level of psychological control exercised by mothers combined with high affection predicted increases in the levels of both internal and external problem behaviors among children. Behavioral control exercised by mothers decreased children's external problem behavior but only when combined with a low level of psychological control.

The Effects of Parenting Styles on Behavioral Problems in Primary School Children: A Cross-Cultural Review

This review examines the literature regarding the effects of parenting styles on children's behavioural problems in different cultures. An initial literature search yielded 941 articles. Subsequent screening of titles and abstracts identified 86 potentially relevant studies. These were stored in full text for additional checks in order to further verify if they corresponded to the purposes of the review. Inclusion criteria yielded 21 studies from the following twelve countries: USA,

Parenting styles and their impacts on child problem behaviors

Jurnal Psikologi Indonesia, Universitas Diponegoro, 2020

Managing child problem behaviors as early as possible is crucial. Several studies have shown the impact of parenting on child problem behavior; however, the studies did not investigate the influence of paternal and maternal parenting on child behavior separately. This study aimed to test the effect of mothers' and fathers' authoritative and authoritarian parenting on child problem behavior. Furthermore, this study examined the influence of family adjustment on parenting styles. Participants were 105 pairs of parents (fathers and mothers). They completed a set of questionnaires assessing their parenting styles, child problem behavior, and family adjustment. Multiple regression analyses resulted in a significant effect of mothers' authoritative parenting on child emotional problems, as well as significant effects of fathers' authoritative and authoritarian parenting on child behavioral problems. Another key finding was that parental teamwork predicted the effectiveness of parenting.

Construction and Validation of Scale of Parenting Style

This paper describes the development and standardization of a measure of perceived parenting style. The four styles namely authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and negligent proposed by Baumrind (1971) are scaled based on a quadrant of high and low levels of parental responsiveness and control suggested by Maccoby and Martin (1983). The items are constructed on socio-cultural and educational circumstances of adolescent students in Kerala, India. Hence, the tool will be largely suitable for scaling the four parenting styles among south Asian adolescent students. The tool has good criterion related validity and test-retest reliability. Parents have huge impact on a person's life. Number of studies in the area of parenting matches its importance on the developing person. Parenting process combines all the activities of the parents that intended to support their children's wellbeing. One of the most studied approaches to understanding parental influences on human development is concept of parenting style (Baumrind, 1967). Baumrind proposed parenting styles as correlates to socialization of the children. Then many researches recognized the importance of researching role of parenting style in child development (Kordi,
