Proceedings of Ikasnabar 2013, the 6th International Conference on Open Education and Technology (MOOCs, PLEs and eLearning platforms), 2013
In the last decade universities have added in their educational structure the e-Learning Systems. ICT have eased the utilization of these systems. While in the past education community put the focus on how to improve the learning process, from 2012 this focus turns into how to reach a massive number of learners. MOOCs allow massive amounts of participants to enroll in a course that it is situated in an open environment and it is available on-line. However, it is argued the difficulty in finding a common definition of MOOCs, since they are developed in different contexts and with distinct purposes. This paper goes into detail about MOOC movement and the main concerns about them. There are two distinct approaches: cMOOCs and xMOOCs. The former is based on connectivism, whilst the latter on conductive theory. Also, five successful developments of MOOCs are briefly analyzed in order to give a whole vision of MOOCs. Every MOOC bears a high rate of enrolment, but also its dropout rates are huge. The paper exhibits an analysis of these rates of the most relevant platforms. On one hand, xMOOCs have caused a high impact. On the other hand, cMOOCs provides a new model of teaching/learning.
The MOOCs: origin, characterization, principal problems and challenges in Higher Education
2016
MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are an innovation that have attracted public academic attention in recent times, and which have resulted in the evolution of e-learning (electronic learning) and so far have not achieved their expectations in Higher Education. This is due to the fact that from the outset these courses have faced a number of problems and questions regarding their acceptance, credibility, quality, methods of assessment, learning outcomes and more; which has generated controversy among their opponents, fans and even the creators of MOOCs. This work forms part of a doctoral investigation; in essence these are the results of the preliminary and exploratory stages in the research process, in which projections on the solution of some problems will be included. MOOCs: Their evolution, problems and challenges up to 2015, will surely help to minimize the high dropout rates of students in MOOCs, supported by mobile technology.
MOOCs: the New Educational Frontier of the 21st Century
Journal of Intercultural Management
Objective: Over and above being widespread in various sectors of the economy and fi-nance, the uncontrollable expansion of digital technology is also conquering areas reserved for education and training, going beyond the traditional models of demand / supply, frontal and long distance lectures. The article aims to analyse the phenomenon of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and how, together with new trends in the context of digital teaching, they can represent an incentive for universities to reflect on the changes that are taking place in educational policies and in academic culture, possibly re-evaluating their mission with the aim of improving the quality of content and learning experiences. Methodology: Through the study of various experiences and publications. Findings: Since their appearance, MOOCs have generated a huge interest in the field of higher education, establishing themselves more and more worldwide as an important online training system, aimed at a large number of...

Learning in the openness: the lost way of the MOOC
Digital Education Review, 2020
At the end of the 2000´s, MOOCs broke into the educational field with the promise of learning with features more suited to the demands of our times. Their connectivist genesis provided a provocative expectation regarding the potential of collaboration, sharing, reuse, and free access, as factors of a possible transformation of the current educational system, which has been characterized by being rigid and reluctant to change. Given the relevance and growing participation of MOOC in education, there is a strong interest in understanding both their functioning and structure so that they can be considered as relevant educational options for a networked society. In this sense, a multi-method, exploratory and mixed study was conducted on 225 MOOCs based on the four categories that make up their denomination: Massive, Open, Online and Course. The study was developed through three stages: enlistment, fieldwork and report. The results of the study show that the contributions of MOOCs as generators of shared and collaborative learning experiences as proposed in their origins are not reflected in the reality of their current offering.
MOOCs: A New Means of Higher Learning
International Journal for Research in Applied Science & Engineering Technology (IJRASET), 2022
MOOCs are an innovative way to conduct teaching-learning in online, with the help of internet technology. The objectives of the study are to Know about the user friendly characteristics of MOOCS. Know the role of MOOCS as an alternative to traditional education, role of MOOCs in higher education. Explore the benefits of MOOCS and to know about the disadvantages of MOOCS. It is a qualitative research. The study is conducted on the bases of researcher observation and critically analysis of the providing facilities of MOOC S in higher education. MOOCs is so popular because it is based on learner centered pedagogy, select learner interest topic, Value oriented, Language is no barrier here, globally use, any time anywhere, Learning is so enjoyable. MOOCs are no alternative to traditional formal education but it is modified then traditional learning. The special role of MOOCs in higher education is it is a free platform, Access for all, Professional development, Provide new courses. Including above benefits there are some limitations of MOOCs are-absence of physical classroom, absence of teacher physical interaction, Here individual attention by the teacher is absent, in remote area where internet connection is week where it is a big problem, most courses are provided by English that's why language is one of the barriers, to assessment the students is difficult, interaction with teacher and other students is less.
The emerging pedagogy of MOOCs, the educational design of technology and practices of study
During the last years, MOOCs (massive open online courses) are part of the most discussed developments in educational technology. MOOCs swept the landscape of educational technology in no time. However, through all this enthusiasm , it is difficult to see the contribution of MOOCs to computer-based education. Even though there is a surge in MOOCs as well as in MOOC-research, it is unclear how an effective MOOC-pedagogy can be developed. What is this MOOC-phe-nomenon? And how can we, as educators, teachers, pedagogues, educational researchers, develop MOOC-pedagogy? In the first part of this paper, we'll start with an overview of the MOOC-phenomenon. In the second part, we'll discuss the implicit philosophical attitudes towards educational technology that underlies much of the MOOC-debates. We then argue that, rather than a theoretically grounded approach to educational technology, common sense attitudes of essentialism and instrumentalism prevail. In the last part of the paper, we suggest to concentrate on the educational design of technology and on the development of practices of study necessary to deal with technology, in order to develop a meaningful educational practice.
2019
This paper presents a brief report on the MOOCs.Some of the famous MOOCs are discussed with their key features and revenue models. The current research gap was identified.Based on the research work already done, various factors were identified which affect the adoption of MOOCs, these were classified based on two perspectives – user point of view and the university which is offering the MOOC. At the end of the paper, we highlight some of the primary research which is to be done in this field.
The Role of MOOCs in the New Educational Scenario
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic emergency has forced a profound reshape of our lives. Our way of working and studying has been disrupted with the result of an acceleration of the shift to the digital world. To properly adapt to this change, we need to outline and implement new urgent strategies and approaches which put learning at the center, supporting workers and students to further develop "future proof" skills. In the last period, universities and educational institutions have demonstrated that they can play an important role in this context, also leveraging on the potential of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) which proved to be an important vehicle of flexibility and adaptation in a general context characterised by several constraints. From March 2020 till now, we have witnessed an exponential growth of MOOCs enrollments numbers, with "traditional" students interested in different topics not necessarily integrated to their curricular studies. To support students an...
