Commission 46: Teaching of Astronomy: (Enseignement de L’astronomie)

Commission 46 is dedicated to Teaching of Astronomy. Commission 46 can be seen as an extension of the IAU Executive Committee in the sense that each adhering country has appointed a national representative to the Commission. National Representatives maintain liaison between the Commission and the home country, and write national triennial reports on development of astronomy on their nations. Other IAU astronomers, with special interest in education, can become regular individual members of the Commission. Non-IAU members can be invited by the Commission to serve for one triennial term. Commission 46 considers that one of its major duties is to contribute to enhance astronomy education in developing countries. The Newsletter, the International School for Young Astronomers, the Visiting Lecturer Program and the Travelling Telescope are examples of such activities administered by the Commission. ``The Sky as a Laboratory'' is an educational project of the Department of Astronomy of the University of Padova aimed to give students a physical approach to astronomy and astrophysics. It is a regional program designed to improve science education in the last two grades of high school, by creating cooperation between scientists and teachers. Currently it is present in 30 high schools around all provinces of the region of Veneto in the North-East of Italy. The close involvement in the didactical activities of high schools teachers is without any doubt the winning strategy of the project. Their enthusiastic participation to teaching and organising activities attracts each year the attention for sciences of an increasing number of students and suggests new ideas for future educational activities.
Researcher for one day; An Astrophysics Masterclass

In the last years it is becoming more and more evident the importance in providing to the students, and people in general, a more realistic view on the scientific research world. In this framework many initiatives are beeing carried out to put students closer to scientists. The Astrophysics Masterclass, held in our Department, is an example of such activities, consisting in a one-day outreach event during which high school students experience the research methods in the astrophysics field. In this paper we describe this activity, which allows the participants to work on real research data in a real research center.

C46 is a Commission of the Executive Committee of the IAU under Division XII Union-Wide Activities. Bringing frontline astronomy in the classroom: EU-HOU

The EU-HOU project ("Hands-On Universe, Europe. Bringing frontline interactive astronomy to the classroom") is in keeping with the general goal of renewing the teaching of science. A re-awakening of interest for science in the young generation is foreseen through astronomy and the use of new technologies, which should challenge middle and high schools pupils. The primary target group will thus be the school teachers, who will be involved through a pilot school scheme widely advertised. The project is based on real observations, possibly acquired by the pupils themselves in classrooms thanks to either a European and worldwide network of automatic telescopes operated via Internet or didactical tools (Webcam system, radio telescope) developed within this project. The International Year of Astronomy 2009: New Approaches and Novel Resources for Physics Classrooms

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) was conceived to honor the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei in 1609, and has evolved into an engaging series of worldwide programs. IYA2009 is sponsored by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and endorsed by the U.S. House of Representatives, UNESCO, and the United Nations. During this year, we are making great efforts to stimulate worldwide interest in astronomy and science, especially among young people and underserved populations. More than 145 countries and three dozen agencies are participating in this global effort, with the United States taking command of three large cornerstone projects described in this article, assisted by funding from the National Science Foundation and leadership from the American Astronomical Society and NASA.
