The first international symposium on Ibn Ḥazm ever convened, to the best of our knowledge, was held in Spain in 1963 with twenty-five participants. The second such symposium was hosted by the Faculty of Theology, Uludağ University and the Muftiship of Bursa on 26-28 October 2007, in Bursa, Turkey. At the latter symposium, which comprised five sessions, twenty-eight papers and eighteen discourses were presented. The proceedings were published in book form after a delay of three years. Three of the contributions were in English, one was in Arabic, and others were in Turkish. The contributions that were not written in Turkish were published in their original language with a Turkish translation. The work is the fruit of a meticulous editorship and promises to become a significant reference work on Ibn Ḥazm. The proceedings are introduced under the headings of philosophy, kalām, fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), the history of religions, and other fields.
Al-Akhlaq (Ethics) Perceptions in Islam: A Textual Interpretation through Imam Muhammad Al-Ghazali
International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences, 2018
Islam contains a general code of conduct; there is neither much doubt nor disagreement on this. That Islam as both a religion and way of life encompasses all religious issues and affairs affecting human's life is also a fact unchallenged by those of consummate mind. One important aspect of all facets of Islamic discussions, that upon which all arguments sprout and agreements are either diverged and/or reached, that which for its effectiveness also relies on intellectual foundation, is al-Akhlaq (the Ethic). Ethic cum conduct is pertinent in Islamic religious facets. It could be interpreted in many ways and forms; its perception differs from one to the other, and sometimes within an individual, but seldom from one religion to the other. This is an area on which the paper is concentrated. This paper thus seeks to explore the meaning of ethics and the perceptions it has in Islam through the major writings of Imam Muhammad al-Ghazaali, an undeniably sounding ethical name among all noble Muslim scholars. It is also the aim of the study to expatiate the importance of ethic in jurisdiction according to al-Ghazaali. The study commonly employs qualitative library approach in collecting and analyzing the data. The study maintains that al-GhazÉlÊ's concept of ethics, if carefully applied on most contemporary issues, suffice and proffer long-lasting solutions to various problems intellectually, mechanically, and technically facing the Muslim nations.
AL-ITQAN: JOURNAL OF ISLAMIC SCIENCES AND COMPARATIVE STUDIES, 2018
This paper will analytically study the Islamic meaning of akhlaq as portrayed by two Western writers in the article entitled “Akhlak” published in the Encyclopedia of Islam. The author highlights the contribution of Western scholars especially Walzer and Gibb to the understanding of history of the development of Islamic thought and disciplines. By employing the qualitative methodology, the author uses textual analysis and comparative method on the writings of both thinkers and others. Findings indicate that there are several weaknesses in the writing that include limiting the scope of akhlaq to practical ethics of selected virtues, the lacking of clear detachment between akhlaq and ethical thought, and others. Key words: Ethics, Akhlaq, Philosophy, Islam, Encyclopedia of Islam.
AN APPRAISAL OF IBN QAYYIM'S ETHICAL THEORY AND ITS CONTEMPORARY RELEVANCE
The main purpose of this paper is to depict the contribution of Sheikh Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziyyah to Ethics; a normative branch of philosophy which deals conspicuously with the theory, scope and the nature of rights and obligations upon the individual and the society. A critical analysis of the significant concepts such as moral (descriptive) and ethics (prescriptive) and the dignity of man, the obligations of man to himself and to others are all subjects of discussion in the paper. It is also hoped that the study will reveal the basis of moral obligation, value and meaning and the extent of human life according to the Ibn Qayyim’s perception. As a spectacular adherent of the Salafi School of thought, he has, undoubtedly, rendered a lot of views in which he portrayed ethics befitting various branches of knowledge. In contrast to the Ibn Qayyim views, the study will touch upon other philosophical views. As a man of relenting intellectual conviction, Ibn Qayyim has based his ethical views on the belief that Islam is a religion that promotes harmony between the individual and the society, faith and science, the material and the spiritual. He, eventually, criticized some of the ethical theories, which defy faith from being an integral part of ethics. However, Ibn Qayyim has achieved his goal for a vast population of Muslims followed the containment of ethical doctrine developed by him nowadays from all angels, even though it has been barely studied by the scholars worldwide.
