Predicting Change Over Time in Career Planning and Career Expectation for High School Students

This study assessed 166 high school students in Grade 8 and again in Grade 10. Four models were tested: (a) whether the T1 predictor variables (career knowledge, indecision, decision-making selfefficacy, selfesteem, demographics) predicted the outcome variable (career planning/exploration) at T1; (b) whether the T1 predictor variables predicted the outcome variable at T2; (c) whether the T1 predictor variables predicted change in the outcome variable from T1ÀT2; and (d) whether changes in the predictor variables from T1ÀT2 predicted change in the outcome variable from T1ÀT2. Strong associations (R 2 ¼ 34%) were identified for the T1 analysis (confidence, ability and paid work experience were positively associated with career planning/exploration). T1 variables were less useful predictors of career planning/exploration at T2 (R 2 ¼ 9%; having more confidence at T1 was associated with more career planning/exploration at T2) and change in career planning/exploration from T1ÀT2 (R 2 ¼ 11%; less confidence and no work experience were associated with change in career planning/exploration from T1ÀT2). When testing effect of changes in predictor variables predicting changes in outcome variable (R 2 ¼ 22%), three important predictors, indecision, work experience and confidence, were identified. Overall, results indicated important roles for self-efficacy and early work experiences in current and future career planning/exploration of high school students. r

The purpose of the study was to examine the differences in personality, motivational factors and career decision-making difficulties between career decided and undecided students. The predictive value of some personality and motivational variables for secondary school students' career decision-making difficulties was also investigated. 641 students of the fourth class of grammar school participated in the study. The results show that there are differences between career decided and undecided students in most of the personality variables. Career decided students make their decisions more self-confidently, are less panic-stricken and avoid decision-making less compared to undecided students. They are higher in extraversion, conscientiousness, openness and emotional stability, are more competent and report having more self-control and fewer career decision-making difficulties. The most important predictors of students' career decision-making difficulties are: a less panic-stricken and impulsive decision-making style, extraversion, emotional stability and competence in self-regulation.
Predictors for career indecision in adolescence
The counseling of adolescents in order to make a vocational choice is a key step along the path of career development. According to an consistent body of research, this study was designed in order to explore the contribution of career decision self-efficacy, locus of control, academic self-esteem, personality traits and parental support to the prediction of career indecision among adolescents. The career locus of control, academic self-esteem and neuroticism were significant predictors of career indecision. The main results were discussed in the context of their relevance for the counseling of adolescents in career choice and development.

Abstract The types of difficulties associated with career attitudes were studiedusing Super’s model of career maturity (1990) in a group of 620 Portuguese students from grades 9 and 12. A cluster analysis identified four styles with different patterns of association between time perspective, attributional beliefs, self-esteem and career attitudes. The adaptive style showed more committed career attitudes, and the other three styles—superficial, insecure and pessimistic—showed lower levels of career maturity. High school students’ career decision-making process
This study investigated consequences of high school students' career decision-making process for choice implementation in higher education. A sample of adolescents participated at the end of Grade 12 and was followed during the Wrst and second year in higher education. Linear and logistic regression analyses revealed that students' coping with career decisional tasks at the end of Grade 12 sig-niWcantly contributed to the several aspects of early choice implementation (i.e., choice actualization, academic adjustment, commitment to the chosen study) during the Wrst trimester in higher education. The importance of these aspects of early choice implementation is demonstrated through their relationship with academic achievement during the Wrst year in higher education.

Career-choice readiness in adolescence: Developmental trajectories and individual differences

Developing career-choice readiness is an important task in adolescence, but current theory and research has provided a rather static view of the phenomenon. The present study investigated the development of career-choice readiness among a group of 325 Swiss students assessed four times every 5 months from seventh through eighth grade. A variable-centered approach applying latent curve modeling showed not only a linear increase of readiness over time but also significant inter-individual differences in the level and development of readiness. Higher levels were predicted by more self-esteem and generalized self-efficacy and fewer perceived barriers while increase in readiness was predicted by increase in occupational information. A person-centered approach applying latent class-growth analysis identified four distinct developmental trajectories: high-increasing (42%), high-decreasing (5%), moderate-increasing (42%), and constantly low (11%). Students with different trajectories showed significant differences in core self-evaluations, occupational knowledge, and barriers. The results suggest that environmental demands promote a developmental trend in readiness development that overrules individual differences for the majority of students. Individual differences affect the level of readiness to a greater extent than the process of its development. Career information seems pivotal for readiness increase.
Motivational Profiles and Career Decision Making of High School Students

Based on self-determination theory, this study sought to identify distinct motivational profiles in a sample of high school students (N = 396, mean age = 17.02 years) using a person-centered approach. Three motivational clusters of students emerged: self-determined students, non-self-determined students, and externally regulated students. Differences between and among these profiles across career exploration and career indecision levels were analyzed. Overall, self-determination theory appears to offer a conceptual framework for organizing career interventions. The fact that motivational profiles can distinguish students among career exploration and career indecision levels leads the authors to reaffirm the importance of differential career intervention practices. Future research should examine the stability of motivational profiles, their predictive power over career exploration and career decision making, and the differences between highly motivated students regarding the career decision-making process.
