Daisy Rubiera Castillo's Reyita: "Mujer Negra": From Objectified Symbol to Empowered Subject (original) (raw)

This paper examines the transformation of the Afro-Cuban woman from an objectified symbol to an empowered subject through the lens of Nancy Morejón's poem "Mujer negra" and the testimonio "Reyita" by Daisy Rubiera Castillo. By analyzing Reyita's journey towards independence and her political awakening, the study highlights the societal shifts that allow for the redefinition of identity within the context of Cuban history. It argues that the changing dynamics of patriarchy and the social circumstances surrounding the Cuban Revolution play crucial roles in this evolution.
