Like other African countries, Cameroon is struggling to meet the food needs of its population. There are several possible solutions to this problem, such as the import of agricultural produce and increasing national production. In terms of fishery products (fish, shrimps, etc.), it would not be easy to increase national production, due to the various constraints inherent in the sector and national industry, as well as low availability of farming areas. Fish farming is one of the solutions recommended as a sustainable method of producing an adequate supply of fish (farming fish in ponds). The study was conducted to assess the determinant of aquaculture technologies adoption among fish-farmers in Obafemi – Owode local government area of Ogun State, Nigeria. Primary data were obtained from 224 fish farmers with an interview-schedule guide and field observation using simple random sampling and snow-balling sampling techniques during 2008 culture period. The study revealed that majority of the respondents were male (78.6%) within active age group of 41-50 years (47.0%), had primary education (51.0%), with household size of 7-8 persons (35.7%), farming as primary occupation (71.4%), fish farming experience of 3-4 years (40.0%) and belonged to fish farmers organization (51.4%). The poor performance of fishery subsector is most clearly evidenced by low adoption of fishery production technologies by farmers. The purpose of this research was analyzing influence of socio-economic factors on the adoption of fish production technologies by community-based farmers in Cross River State, Nigeria. A Multistage random sampling technique was used in selecting 60 community-based farmers. Data for the study were analyzed with descriptive statistics and probit regression model. The result showed that the farmers adopted catfish technology packages such as; pond construction, stocking rate, fertilization of pond, feeding, test cropping, fingerlings production and harvesting and processing. The probit regression estimates of the determinants of farmer’s adoption showed that coefficients of education, farm income and extension contacts were positive and significant at 1%. The study assessed the adoption of improved aquaculture technologies among fish farmers in Lagos State, Nigeria. A total of 90 fish farmers were sampled through the multistage sampling technique. A validated and pretested interview schedule was used to obtain primary information from the fish farmers. Obtained data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results obtained revealed that more than half and about one-third of the fish farmers sourced credit facilities from cooperative societies and Esusu, respectively, while almost all sold their fishes as smoked fish. Higher proportions of the fish farmers were aware, tried and adopted most of the improved aquaculture technologies with some of the fish farmers also discontinuing most of the previously adopted technologies. Adoption of Aquaculture Technologies among Fish Farmers in Oluyole Local Government Area, Oyo State
This study examined the level of adoption of aquaculture technology among fish farmers in Oluyole Local Government area of Oyo State, Nigeria. To improve aquaculture practice in Nigeria, a technology package was developed and disseminated to fish farmers in the Local Government. This package included twelve practices that the fish farmers were supposed to adopt. One hundred and ten respondents were randomly selected from the registered fish farmers in the Local Government. Data were collected through use of well structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as percentage and frequency distribution were used while Chi-square and PPMC were used to analysis the hypotheses. The results showed that level of adoption of the technology was low. Less than half of the respondents adopted the technology. After the liming of pond, which was fully adopted by 55.9%, pond outlet and inlet fully adopted by 50.0% and Feed technology fully adopted by 50.0% which were usually not to specification. The farmers found it difficult to adopt the other recommendations, (e.g., Use the chilled holding for preservation fully adopted by 16.6%, hatchery technique fully adopted by 40.4% Water quality test before fully adopted by 40.1%). To increase the level of adoption of aquaculture technologies in the study area, it is necessary to change farmers' perception from subsistence to commercial and sustainable farming practice; to assist the farmers with credit facilities and to intensify activities of the extension agents.
