Perspectives on healthcare leader and leadership development

Journal of Healthcare Leadership, 2010

Healthcare delivery systems are complex entities that must merge the best of administrative and clinical practices into a new model of leadership. But, despite growing recognition that healthcare organizational leaders must partner with clinical leaders to address patient safety, evidence based practice, financial sustainability, and capacity, tensions between the groups remain. Healthcare is based in large, bureaucratic entities organized in administrative hierarchies with clinical or product line silos that thwart collaboration, limit inter-disciplinary engagement, and foster mistrust. Around the world healthcare accessibility, fragmentation and affordability issues challenge healthcare systems whether they are centralized, socialized systems or free market private and public enterprises. In response to these concerns, healthcare organizations are struggling to address the 'how' of integrating clinician competence in patient management with the financial imperatives of modern day delivery systems. To redesign healthcare services for effectiveness and efficiency and to improve patient safety and outcomes, organizations must redefine leadership using new paradigms that promote the development and diffusion of improvements and innovations. Current research evidence shows that there is a need for not just formal administrative leadership, but also a need to develop integrated leadership processes throughout healthcare delivery systems. Shared leadership concepts framed in the context of complexity leadership theory (CLT) provides a vehicle for rethinking old definitions of leadership and for mobilizing the collective energy of healthcare organizations.

Leadership Hypothesis: Analysing Transactional And Transformational Leadership Methods In The United States Healthcare Industry

International Journal of Scientific & Technology Research, 2021

Notwithstanding recent groundbreaking scientific and technical inventions, the United States healthcare industry faces persisting problems of a disintegrated system, an increasing price of care, and the delivery of high standard care. These problems have been ascribed to the healthcare industry's failure to react to the changing patients/workforce populations, defective working environment, and above all, a gap in leadership. Efforts in the recent past to solve these problems by evaluating the rising price of care, paucity of access, and standard of care delivered failed because these measures didn't do enough to bridge the gap in leadership. The U.S healthcare industry is presently challenged with huge complicated issues accompanied by a growing mistrust in the general public. Consequently, focused and purposeful leadership is cardinal in the contemporary season to ensure the continuity of the healthcare industry. The two leadership methods put forward to institute reformations in the healthcare industry are the transactional and transformational leadership methods. The former primarily focuses on superintendence, ordering, or implementation of the firm's policies as well as preserving its cultures/values; while the latter concentrates on working together with the employees to identify things that need to change, and through inspiration/joint efforts such reforms are implemented. Hence, it has become important to review the two leadership methods to know which of them will assist the healthcare industry to solve its problems. This paper set out to review the transactional and transformational methods of leadership and to find out which of them is more apt for the healthcare industry in America.

It has been realized that the quality of leadership is crucial to how work gets done in an organization. People who are managing healthcare organizations and healthcare systems need leadership ability and skills because they depend on their employees for effective work execution. The aim of this book is to describe an accredited training course entitled Medical and Healthcare Leadership which will serve as a compendium and a useful guidebook for professional trainers working in this field. The knowledge and skills acquired during the course will help the participants to think and work to improve the medical practices and health services in their organizations and institutions.

Leadership and Its Effect on Health Management

Leadership in health care focuses mainly on achieving the goal of effective health care delivery as a team under the guidance of another team member. Leadership in the health sector has become a key point in improving patient safety and health management as a whole. Delivering effective health care services to patients may be more efficient when health care professionals unite and act as a single body that is patient oriented. By developing a structure where leadership influences health management, the outcome of services rendered to patients is being greatly ameliorated. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has outlined a number of actions which health care organizations need to implement in order to improve patient safety. The Baldrige National Quality Program also recognizes the importance of leaders and has stated the roles of leaders and what is expected of them in order to achieve excellence in health care. Leadership models are the fundamentals of leadership, which determine whether the objectives will be met as in the interest of the organization. This research was aimed to determine the impact of leadership on health management. This explores the characteristics of a leader, leadership styles that may be implemented, and their effect on outcome in a health care organization.

The Aspects of Shared Leadership in Health Care

SOCIETY. INTEGRATION. EDUCATION. Proceedings of the International Scientific Conference, 2018

Leadership is overwhelming the thinking of contemporary society. A well-functioning organization is first identified with its leader very often. Therefore, it is very important to question the attitude of leadership constantly, not to devalue it, but to understand it better and realize it. Moreover, the expression of leadership in different organizations is very distinct, and its specificity in areas such as health care is still insufficiently explored. Healthcare organizations hold strict hierarchy, therefore leadership is considered as equal to the administrative position. Modern conceptualizations such as transactional, shared, authentic and other leadership theories point to the educational power of a leadership; however, implementation remains challenging. The article presents the analytical-theoretical point of view and interpretive approach for case study about leadership. Firstly, the article introduces research evidence analysis of leadership educational impact for integrat...
