The state-space realization of ann-dimensional transfer function
International Journal of Circuit Theory and Applications, 1981
In this paper the non-minimal real state-space realization for ndimensional transfer functions with polylinear numerators and denominators is stated and proved. It is also shown that the every existing realization of an ndimensional transfer function can be achieved from the companion matrix of some (n + 1)-variable polynomial linear with respect to one of its variables.
Standard controllable realizations for nD separable transfer matrices
2011
A class of nD discrete-time systems is considered and its state- space and frequency-domain representations are provided. By using the multidimensional (nD) Z-transformation, it is shown that the transfer ma- trices for these systems are proper rational functions in n indeterminates with separable denominators. A realization problem for these systems is stated and an algorithm is proposed to construct standard controllable realizations for transfer matrices with separable denominators. A Matlab program is given for the provided algorithm and two examples illustrate the advantages of the proposed method.
Notes on minimal realizations of multidimensional systems
Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing, 2014
In this paper, we formalize two related but different notions for state-space realization of multidimensional (nD) single-input-single-output discrete systems in nD Roesser model, namely the "absolutely minimal realization" and the "minimal realization". We then focus our study mainly on first-degree 2D and 3D causal systems. A necessary and sufficient condition for absolutely minimal realizations is given for first-degree 2D systems. It is then shown that first-degree 2D systems that do not admit absolutely minimal realizations always admit minimal realizations of order 3. A Gröbner basis approach is also proposed which leads to a sufficient condition for the absolutely minimal realizations of some higher-degree 2D systems. We then present a symbolic method that gives simple necessary conditions for the existence of absolutely minimal realizations for first-degree 3D systems. A two-step approach to absolutely minimal realizations for first-degree 3D systems is then presented, followed by techniques for minimal realizations of first-degree 3D systems. Throughout the paper, several non-trivial examples are illustrated with the aim of helping the reader to apply the realization methods proposed in this paper.
Review of multidimensional systems theory, edited by N. K. Bose
Linear Algebra and its Applications, 1987
Few parts of application-oriented mathematics have benefited from the interaction with modern algebraic and analytic geometry as much as the area usually referred to as multidimensional systems theory. This field consists of the study of various topics in the theory of functions of several complex variables, motivated mostly by problems in network design and synthesis and by signal-processing applications. Because of finite realizability constraints, the focus is often on rational functions; this accounts for the strong algebraic flavor of papers in the area, and in particular the use of techniques and results from commutative algebra. A linear-algebraic component is introduced by the need to consider matrices whose entries are analytic or rational functions.
Composition of rational functions: state-space realization and applications
Linear Algebra and its Applications
We define two versions of compositions of matrix-valued rational functions of appropriate sizes and whenever analytic at infinity, offer a set of formulas for the corresponding state-space realization, in terms of the realizations of the original functions. Focusing on positive real functions, the first composition is applied to electrical circuits theory along with introducing a connection to networks of feedback loops. The second composition is applied to Stieltjes functions.

This paper considers systems theoretic properties of linear systems defined in terms of spatial and temporal indeterminates. These include physical applications where one of the indeterminates is of finite duration. In some cases, a singular Roesser state-space model representation of the dynamics has found use in characterizing systems theoretic properties. The representation of the dynamics of many linear systems is obtained in terms of transform variables and a polynomial system matrix representation. This paper develops a direct method for constructing the singular Roesser state-space realization from the system matrix description for 3D systems such that relevant properties are retained. Since this method developed relies on basic linear algebra operations, it may be highly effective from the computational standpoint. In particular, spatially interconnected systems of the form of the ladder circuits are considered as the example. This application confirms the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed method independently of the system spatial order. Controllable and autonomous nD linear systems
Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing, 1999
The theory of multidimensional systems suffers in certain areas from a lack of development of fundamental concepts. Using the behavioural approach, the study of linear shift-invariant nD systems can be encompassed within the well-established framework of commutative algebra, as previously shown by Oberst. We consider here the discrete case. In this paper, we take two basic properties of discrete nD systems, controllability and autonomy, and show that they have simple algebraic characterizations. We make several non-trivial generalizations of previous results for the 2D case. In particular we analyse the controllable-autonomous decomposition and the controllable subsystem of autoregressive systems. We also show that a controllable nD subsystem of (k q ) (Z n ) is precisely one which is minimal in its transfer class.
Structured Noncommutative Multidimensional Linear Systems
SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 2005
We introduce a class of multidimensional linear systems with evolution along a free semigroup. The transfer function for such a system is a formal power series in noncommuting indeterminates. Standard system-theoretic properties (the operations of cascade/parallel connection and inversion, controllability, observability, Kalman decomposition, state-space similarity theorem, minimal state-space realizations, Hankel operators, realization theory) are developed for this class of systems. We also draw out the connections with the much earlier studied theory of rational and recognizable formal power series. Applications include linear-fractional models for classical discretetime systems with structured, time-varying uncertainty, dimensionless formulas in robust control, multiscale systems and automata theory, and the theory of formal languages.
