This long review is a critical survey of the current glyptic research and of the studies about engraved gemstones recently published; the period considered is from the 3rd century BC to the end of glyptic art. The many and complicated aspects of the glyptic world are reflected by a wide range of contributions: handbooks, corpora, monographs, catalogues of public and private collections; overviews and specific analysis; essays dedicated to whole groups, to historical, stylistic, technical aspects of gems, to ideological and political implications, to particular subjects, periods, themes, materials; publications about gems engravers, artists, scholars, antiquaries, collectors, forgers; iconographical and iconological insights into the wonderful world of images on gems; cast collections of gem impressions; the documentary evidence; resources available for non-destructive analyses. In this article are discussed many themes, problems, different approaches to the subject, neglected aspects of studies, open questions, ongoing and future researches.
