Instruction librarians focus on teaching information literacy skills to students in a variety of settings. However, most college professors only allow the librarian one 50 minute BI session per class to convey this in-depth amount of information each semester. During a library session, active learning technology can be utilized to encourage student participation and hands-on learning. Often, librarians seek other avenues to embed their knowledge to students beyond the BI session, e.g., Blackboard, wikis, tutorials, and subject guides. In this study, the authors use Interwrite Personal Response Systems (clickers) over two semesters to encourage student engagement during a BI session in a course originally designed for at-risk freshmen, then redesigned for any first-year student. The authors implement pre/posttests the second semester using the university’s course management system (Blackboard). The authors explain how this two-semester project integrated information literacy skills into a first-year curriculum, while serving as an instrumental assessment measure for student learning.

Objective – Librarians at Rider University attempted to discern the basic information literacy (IL) skills of students over a two year period (2009-2011). This study aims to explore the impact of one-session information literacy instruction on student acquisition of the information literacy skills of identifying information and accessing information using a pretest/posttest design at a single institution. Program. This pro-active Program targets instruction for all academic degrees and information competencies are also embedded in each lower-division General Education course. Librarians and disciplinary faculty work together to ensure that students successfully master these information literacy (IL) competencies. Three different assessment initiatives will be presented in this paper. The use of the iSkills test as a backbone for the study of first-year students and their retention; IL outcomes as measured in the General Education Assessment Plan; and participation in the annual assessments for academic programs are three campus-wide initiatives gathering evidence that students are becoming information literate.
Do Online Learning Modules Have a Role in Information Literacy Instruction

How can academic librarians engage undergraduate students and infuse fresh active learning approaches that enhance learning while delivering information literacy (IL) instruction? Does adding in-class tutorials to library instruction sessions positively impact student learning of IL concepts? This Assessment in Action (AiA) action research project addressed these pressing concerns and explored this contemporary and practical problem in library instruction. In the broader realm of assessment, the project tackled some challenges of assessing student learning when online tutorials and brief quizzes were added to a 50-minute instruction session. The study employed a mixed design, blending basic quantitative techniques with qualitative approaches. The qualitative responses from the students provided the most fruitful assessment data in the form of open-ended responses that evolved into themes indicating how the participants reacted to the tutorials. These responses provided rich feedback on how the tutorials might be improved.

Introduction Since the release of the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education,1 academic libraries have implemented a wide range of initiatives and programs. Formats range from traditional library instruction that integrates information literacy concepts in “one shot” sessions to credit-bearing courses that are librarian led and offer course or disciplinespecific instruction. Delivery modes also range from face-to-face to online instruction. Increasingly, student assessment and indicators related to program impact have become the focus of ongoing discussions. A Course of Our Own: Taking an Information Literacy Credit Course from Inception to Reality

Since 2009 librarians at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia have been teaching a fully weighted (half-unit/three credit) course in information literacy (IL), LIBR2100: Introduction to Research in the Information Age. Course sections are capped at 30 students with classes offered on campus in a traditional classroom/lab environment, and via distance using multimode technology. Now firmly established in the University’s curriculum, required in three programs and an elective in all others, the course is in demand with growing wait-lists requiring that multiple sections be offered each term. While the literature supports the positive outcomes of IL credit courses for both the students enrolled and the librarians teaching, few universities or colleges currently offer such an opportunity.
