The Impact of Distance Online Education Introduced during the Pandemic on the Motivation of Higher Education Students (original) (raw)

Due to the expansion of higher education, the number of students attending universities has significantly grown over the last few decades. However, many students drop out of higher education due to several reasons, such as lack of motivation. Freshmen and students in mechanical, IT, and natural scientific programs are more endangered to dropping out. The reasons for dropout have been surveyed by many researchers and several theories have been elaborated. One of the key factors of dropout theories is student motivation. Higher education students might be successful in their academic career if they own the ability of self-regulated learning, which is closely connected to intrinsic motivation and selfefficacy. Distance online education, introduced in March 2020, has a significant impact on students' attitude and motivation. The first research was conducted in February 2020, before the pandemic among 1-year IT students, while the second onein March 2021, after a year of purely online learning including freshmen and sophomores. Comparing the data of the two years, a decrease in intrinsic motivation and an increase in extrinsic motivation can be detected by 2021.
