The essential oils of many plants have become popular in recent years and their bioactive principles have recently won several industry sectors, however their use as antibacterial and antifungal agents has been reported. This study focuses on the physico chemical and phytochemical with a study of the antimicrobial activity of essential oils of aromatic and medicinal plant of southwest Algeria, this essential oil was obtained by hydro-distillation of aerial parts of Cotula cinerea, belonging to the Asteraceae family, it is very extensive in the spring season in a region called Kenadza road, located 12km from Bechar. This work had done the object of the chemical quality study and the evaluation of antibacterial and antifungal activity of the Cotula cinerea essential oil from South Morocco. The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial part of the plant had been analyzed by GC/FID and GC/MS. The essence of Cotula cinerea is characterized by dominance of the 3-iso-thujanol followed by Santolina triene and camphor. The antimicrobial activity of Cotula cinerea essential oils had been estimated vis-a-vis of four bacterial strains, three molds and four reference woods rot fungi. The essential oil of this species showed a strong antimicrobial power against the tested microorganisms.

The chemical composition and anticandidal properties of the essential oil of Moroccan Cotula cinerea aerial parts have been examined. GC-MS data were used to identify 24 constituents. Oxygenated monoterpenes constituted the main fraction with trans-thujone (41.4%), cis-verbenyl acetate (24.7%), 1,8-cineole (8.2%) and camphor (5.5%) as the major components. The anticandidal activity of the essential oil was evaluated using a panel of human pathogenic fungi (Candida albicans CCMM L4 and CCMM L5, C. krusei CCMM L10, C. glabrata CCMM L7 and C. parapsilosis CCMM L18). The oil showed high anticandidal activity against all investigated strains with minimal inhibitory concentrations of 3.2 to 4.7 mg/mL depending on the tested yeast and 5.9 mg/mL as a minimal candidicidal concentration value. Aqueous extracts of 54 medicinal plants were evaluated for antibacterial activity against important human pathogenic and plant pathogenic bacteria by agar well diffusion method. Aqueous extracts of Combretum latifolium Bl., Persea macrantha (Nees) Kosterm., Vateria indica L. and Humboldtia brunonis Wall. recorded significant inhibitory activity against both human and plant pathogenic bacteria. These plants were further subjected to solvent extraction successively with petroleum spirit, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol based on increasing polarity to identify the suitable solvent for isolation of the antibacterial active principle.
