Purpose This study examined the association between medication adherence (MA) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among the adult type 2 diabetes mellitus at the primary care level. Methods In this cross-sectional study, the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS) was the main independent variable and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief the dependent variable. Besides socio-demographic data, diabetes-related distress (DRD) and depression (DS) were included as covariates. Independent association between the MMAS score and HRQoL was done using multiple linear regression. Results The participants' response rate was 93.1 % (700/ 752). Majorities were female (52.8 %), Malay (52.9 %) and married (79.1 %). The mean (SD) for age and the MMAS score was 56.9 (10.18) and 5.6 (1.42), respectively. MMAS total score correlated significantly with all HRQoL domains: overall QoL (OQoL) (r = 0.17), physical QoL (r = 0.11), psychological QoL (r = 0.10), social relationship QoL (r = 0.15) and environmental QoL (EQoL) (r = 0.18). After adjustment for covariates (age, gender, ethnicity, religion, education, income, exercise, macrovascular complications, DRD and DS), MA had persistent effects on OQoL (B = 0.53, 95 % CI 0.012-1.048) and EQoL (B = 0.95, 95 % CI 0.235-1.667). Conclusion MA showed prevalent correlation and positive effects on the domains of HRQoL. Despite the small effects of MA on HRQoL, the sheer presence of the independent effects provides healthcare providers good reason for initiative and intervention to improve MA, which would improve quality of life.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease with a high prevalence world wide. This disease has also been reported to affect the quality of life (QOL) of the patient and their family due to its chronic nature and multi organ involvement. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between adherence to prescribed diabetes medication and diabetes-specific QOL in patients attending Secondary Health Care Facility in Bandung City, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the Secondary Health Care Facility in Bandung City, Indonesia. Data were collected between February and April 2014 using consecutive sampling. Adherence was assessed using the eight-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale while diabetes-specific-QOL was assessed using the Diabetes 39 instrument. Results: The results showed that among the patients, 49.4% exhibited low adherence, 29.7% exhibited medium adherence, and 20.9% exhibited high adherence to diabetes medication. Diabetes-specific QOL proved to be highly affected in the sexual functioning domain. Social-burden domain scores were better than overall QOL scores. There was a significant association between adherence and diabetes-specific QOL (p = 0.009) using The Kruskall-Wallis test of significance. The results of the post hoc Mann-Whitney tests (high vs medium adherence, p = 0.084; medium vs low adherence, p = 0.86; and high vs low adherence, p = 0.001) indicated that higher adherence to prescribed diabetes medication contributed to an improved QOL. Multiple regression analysis showed that the predictors of diabetes-specific QOL were adherence and patient income. Conclusions: Adherence to prescribed medication showed a positive effect on diabetes-specific QOL in patients. Patients with a high adherence to medication had an

Introduction: Previous studies have reported the relationship between medication adherence and quality of life are interrelated. However, many of the results were found to be conflicting. This study aimed to assess the level and association of medication adherence and quality of life among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital, Kelantan, Malaysia. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among adult type 2 diabetes mellitus patients on treatment for over 1 year using convenience sampling at outpatient. Medication Compliance Questionnaire (MCQ) and revised Diabetes Quality of Life Questionnaire (DQOL) instrument were self-administered to eligible subjects. Data were analysed using GNU PSPP version 0.8.5 and reported for descriptive statistics as well as correlation of both parameters. Results: A total of 200 patients were recruited and they were mostly at the age of 40 to 60 years old. The mean (SD) score for MCQ was 26.0 (1.6) w...

Purpose The purpose was to evaluate the association between medication adherence and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with diabetes. Methods In this cross-sectional study, a total of 518 patients were recruited from the outpatient departments of different general public and private hospitals in Greece during the COVID-19 pandemic using a consecutive sampling method. HRQoL was assessed with the EQ-5D-5L instrument and medication adherence with the corresponding subscale of the Adherence Starts with Knowledge 20 questionnaire. The relationship between HRQoL and adherence was explored by employing Spearman's correlations and multiple binary logistic and linear stepwise regressions using robust standard errors. Results A total of 15.1 and 1.9% of the patients reported that they had taken a medicine either more or less often than prescribed in the last month and week, respectively. Statistically significant but modest correlations of medication non-adherence with the EQ-5D index (rho = − 0.223), EQ-VAS (rho = − 0.230), and all the HRQoL domains (rho ranging from 0.211, for pain/discomfort, to 0.136, for mobility issues) were found. These significant associations persisted even after controlling for several other known potential factors of HRQoL in the multivariable analyses, except for the mobility and anxiety/depression dimensions. Conclusion Medication non-adherence appears to be independently associated with lower HRQoL and health levels in patients with diabetes. It is crucial to plan interventions to enhance medication adherence not only to obtain greater value from the available resources, but also to improve HRQoL of patients with diabetes.

Background: Despite certain contradictions, an association has been identified between adherence to drug treatment and the quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes. The contradictions observed emphasize the importance of using different methods to measure treatment adherence, or the association of psychological precursors of adherence with quality of life. For this reason, we have used an indirect method to measure adherence (pill count), as well as two adherence behaviour precursors (attitude and knowledge), to assess the association between adherence and the quality of life in type 2 diabetes patients.

Medication adherence is important in controlling blood sugar levels (HbA1c) in patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Studies on the relationship between medication adherence and blood sugar control on the quality of life (QoL) in Type 2 DM patients are limited in Indonesia. This study aims to assess the relation between medication adherence with blood sugar control and the quality of life of Type 2 DM patients. This study used a cross-sectional design conducted at Universitas Indonesia Hospital. Medication Adherence Questionnaires and EuroQoL 5D-5L is used to assess patients' medication adherence and quality of life. This study involved a total of 74 Type 2 DM patients with an average age of 57 ± 10.74 years. Medication adherence with good blood sugar control (HbA1c <7%) showed a significant relationship (p-value <0.05) with COR values of 3.74 (1.21-11.6) compared to non-adherent patients. But not on the QoL Index and VAS (Visual Analog Scale) values, where the value is lower in patients with high adherence and good blood sugar control. Factor asscociated with blood sugar controlled were comorbidites and medication adhrence while factor that associated with quality of life were comorbidities, ages, education and employment status.
