Role of Yoga in Non-Communicable Diseases: A Brief Review

Yoga understands health and well-being as a dynamic continuum of human nature and not merely a ‘state’ to be reached and maintained. Yoga helps the individual to establish “sukha sthanam”, which may be defined as a dynamic sense of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri Guru Maharaj, the visionary founder of Ananda Ashram at the ICYER, Pondicherry (www.icyer.com) and one of the foremost authorities on Yoga in the past century exclaimed lucidly, “Yoga chikitsa is virtually as old as yoga itself, indeed, the return of mind that feels separated from the Universe in which it exists represents the first yoga therapy. Yoga chikitsa could be termed as man’s first attempt at unitive understanding of mind-emotions-physical distress and is the oldest wholistic concept and therapy in the world.” To achieve this yogic integration at all levels of our being, it is essential that we take into consideration the all encompassing multi dimensional aspects ...

Yoga & Ayurveda : A Complementary System Of Preventive Therapeutics For Some Important Lifestyle Disorders :- A Review

2021

Modern medicine increasingly looks to traditional systems of medicine to combat the chronic disease crisis caused by non-communicable diseases. Yoga & Ayurveda present two ways to eliminate pathology and restore health. In ancient India, health was promoted by the most powerful means available. Traditional Indian system of medicines like Ayurveda and Yoga often restore health when all else has failed. They are increasingly accepted as possible routes to regaining health even in the face of otherwise incurable chronic diseases. Their seeds in the Upanisads are the pancavayus (five subtle energies) pranas (vital breaths) controlling the physiology. Acting on ‘subtle levels’ that control gross physical levels gives Yoga and Ayurveda their power to cure chronic diseases and restore health. As integrative practiced today, yoga-medicine combine traditional wisdom with modern medicine. Mentally yoga aims to balance the mind (‘balance of mind’ is called yoga) by balancing the three gunas. Many studies suggest yoga is a non-demanding activity that can effectively reduce anxiety, depression, and pain in the adult population with acute and chronic health conditions without adverse effects. Based on the results of numerous studies, yoga intervention can improve mental health and improve the quality of life of cancer patients or survivors. This paper focuses on yoga and its impact on alleviating the symptoms of cancer and the treatment. Based on the reviewed literature, the results of the studies suggest the problem of heterogeneous study design, lack of quantitative findings and lack of evidence regarding the long-term effects of yoga on the personal well-being of cancer patients. Future research should focus on systematic reviews or meta-analyses to provide further evidence on the type and effectiveness of yoga during or after cancer treatment for specific cancers.

The impact of the “Yogic Lifestyle” on cancer prognosis and survival: Can we target cancer stem cells with yoga?

International Journal of Yoga, 2017

Cancer has recently been known to originate from stem cell-like cells, called cancer stem cells (CSCs). Their unique properties of self-duplication, multiplication, as well as migration give the CSC resistance over conventional cancer therapies. Newer therapies are in developmental stage to target these stem cell-like populations and become the vanguard of future treatments. Several complementary and alternative treatments have been used in cancer management as an adjunct to conventional therapy to improve the overall quality of life and reduce recurrence. Yoga stands as the third most popular of all complementary and alternative medicine treatments currently used in cancer patients today. Preliminary results show that yoga modulates neural, hormonal, and immune functions at a cellular level. The scope of this commentary is to discuss the current evidence-based medicine on yoga and its effect on CSCs.

Implication of yoga in noncommunicable diseases

Journal of Social Health and Diabetes, 2017

The significance of yoga in health and disease is so extensive and of such a general nature that it has become a necessity for doctors who will be practicing in the current and the coming centuries. The evidence generated has made modern medicine accept the love, peace, joy, positive thinking, relaxation, hope, etc., as therapeutic tools. This is how yoga becomes a potent instrument for influencing the mind positively. Based on the above traditional as well as scientific thinking, some of the noncommunicable diseases are mentioned in this article, for which yoga may be used with a favorable effect in modern medicine. The need of the current time is to have an integrated approach toward complete therapy and to utilize yoga therapy in harmonization, cooperation, and collaboration with other systems of medicine such as modern medicine, Ayurveda, and naturop...

This study therefore aimed to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a yoga intervention in men and women receiving conventional treatment for a cancer diagnosis. Prospective, mixed methods feasibility trial allocated participants to receive one of three yoga interventions over a four-week study period. Data collection was completed through online survey of QOL-CA/CS and customized surveys. Fifteen participants were included (11 female) undergoing treatment for breast, prostate, colorectal, brain, and blood and lung cancer. Two participants dropped out and complete qualitative and quantitative data sets were collected from 12 participants and four yoga instructors. Other outcome measures included implementation costs patient-reported preferences for yoga intervention and changes in QOL-CA/CS. Three types of yoga inter...

Effects of Yoga on Psychological Health, Quality of Life, and Physical Health of Patients with Cancer: A Meta-Analysis

Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2011

Yoga is one of the most widely used complementary and alternative medicine therapies to manage illness. This meta-analysis aimed to determine the effects of yoga on psychological health, quality of life, and physical health of patients with cancer. Studies were identified through a systematic search of seven electronic databases and were selected if they used a randomized controlled trial design to examine the effects of yoga in patients with cancer. The quality of each article was rated by two of the authors using the PEDro Scale. Ten articles were selected; their PEDro scores ranged from 4 to 7. The yoga groups compared to waitlist control groups or supportive therapy groups showed significantly greater improvements in psychological health: anxiety (P = .009), depression (P = .002), distress (P = .003), and stress (P = .006). However, due to the mixed and low to fair quality and small number of studies conducted, the findings are preliminary and limited and should be confirmed through higher-quality, randomized controlled trials. of Hindawi Publishing Corporation
