THE ROLE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY: Worldviews and Identity Discernment of Muslim Youth Mustafa Cabir ALTINTAŞ

Nobel Academy , 2021

This book extends the growing body of literature around the role of Islam and Islamic education in the lives of Muslim youth, and the qualities and skills needed to facilitate effective religious education among young people. İt explores Muslim youth within their religious and cultural settings, and it also examines their subjects and problems to bring a critical approach and a new understanding. İt investigates the Muslim identity from different perspectives and considers whether this identity has its roots solely in religion or whether it also emanates from the interplay of a variety of social forces, such as secularism, modernism, and postmodernity. This book is one of the few studies that contributed to the field using Worldview Theory. The importance of this book is enhanced by the fact that in Turkish society most of the challenges in the life of religious individuals have usually been confronted with formal religious considerations such as whether they conform to Islamic proclamations or not. Thus, the findings of the study may contribute to the development of new pedagogy and curriculum in religious education, particularly in secondary schools. The book contributes to the literature about religious education, typology of youths’ worldviews, identity and culture, and advances knowledge that has the potential to create greater social cohesion in Turkey.

Building A Muslim Worldview Through Islamic Education in The Middle of Globalization

Nazhruna: Jurnal Pendidikan Islam, 2023

It is undeniable that the current of westernization has been so strong. Western cultural values and ideologies have entered the minds of most Indonesian Muslims. So unknowingly, he became a worldview. This study aims to examine two things; first. The importance of the Islamic worldview for a Muslim as a feature of his identity in the midst of globalization, and secondly. The role of Islamic education in building and linking the world view of Islam in Muslim societies in the midst of globalization. This research includes library research, so the data collection technique used in this research is literary data collection. The results of this study show that the Islamic worldview is very different from the western worldview regarding reality and truth because the Islamic worldview refers to the main sources, namely the Qur'an and Hadith. For this reason, the role and responsibility of Islamic education are to build and strengthen the worldview of Islam in Muslim society as a system of guidance and control over ideas and values that undermine their identity or identity as Muslims. The education system must refer to the Islamic worldview to produce pious human beings who always base their attitudes and actions on Islamic teachings and values.

An Islamic Worldview: An Essential Component of an Islamic Education

Lahore Journal of Policy Studies Vol. 1 No. 1, p95-106, 2007

In contrast to the European worldview, Islam asserts that the best of times was the time of the Prophet Mohammad. S.A.W. These two worldviews are dramatically opposed to each other in many different dimensions. Today, the dominance of the Eurocentric worldview has indoctrinated Muslims into accepting many un-Islamic beliefs. Understanding and absorbing the Islamic worldview is a necessary antidote. In Search of Islamic Definition of Worldview: Elements, and Its Characters

2020

The discourse about worldview rapidly developed in harmony with the philosophy of science itself. The reason is that globalization has 'challenged' various nations and countries to develop science and technology; some even seem to negate others. At this stage, civilization experiences a 'clash'; namely at the level of natural outlook (clash of worldview). That is, differences in culture, nation, race and religion also confirm the definitive difference between the worldview of Islam and non-Islam. Furthermore, the true concept of the Islamic worldview can be defined based on the elements and characteristics that are fundamental to Islam philosophically. This literature research model seeks to offer efforts to define the Islamic worldview historically; that is, from the very beginning of the emergence of this concept until the 'maturity' of the concept of the Islamic worldview in the hands of Muslim scholars; and possible future developments. Data analysis is c...

Factors Determining Religious Identity Construction Among Western-Born Muslims: Towards a Theoretical Framework

Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, 2008

The aim of this article is to analyze, on the basis of a particular theoretical approach to identity construction, the factors that shape and help delineate various types of (religious) identity constructions among Western-born generations of Muslims. The author argues that a theoretical framework that combines a socio-cultural use of religion in the construction of group identity with that of scriptural interpretation provides the optimal conceptual tool for not only understanding the formation of religious identity among Western-born and/or Western-raised generations of Muslims, but also for delineating between different types of identities being acquired by the Muslims living in the West.

Lessening Impact of Religion on Turkish Muslim Identity in Westernizing and Modernizing Turkey

Journal Article, 2012

Turks have had a strong connection to Islam religion for a long time. After the eighth century when they began to accept Islam, their relations with Islam and Islamic communities increased more and more depending on the expanding geographies of the Turkish states. Anatolia, now called Turkey, harbours many different religions although the dominant one is Islam. Besides such factors as traditions, customs, and language, religion has also a great influence on shaping one’s or a community’s identity. Although religion was an important part of Turkish identity, it began to lose its effectiveness especially after the foundation of Turkish Republic. Due to the Westernization and modernization movements in this term, Islamic traditions and principles began to lose their dominance on people across the country. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the changing Turkish Muslim identity in a secularizing environment beginning with the 20th century, and to show how the technological and scientific changes in Europe influenced the core of Turkish Muslim identity. Keywords: Turkish identity, Islam, modernization, Westernization, identity crisis

Personal Identity From an Islamic Perspective

International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences

From an Islamic perspective, personal identity is an important issue because it involves a Muslim's strength and profoundness towards his religious beliefs. However, the current scenario shows that Muslims are increasingly distancing themselves from religious beliefs due to the influence of temptations and challenges offered by the world today. This study intended to examine personal identity in more detail by focusing on discussions pertaining to its definition, criteria as well as challenges in efforts to consolidate the Islamic identity. This was a qualitative study that used the content analysis method on various reference materials. Findings show that the personal identity issue should be a priority for Muslims, especially for rulers and religious scholars. Suitable strategies and approaches should be designed as soon as possible so that Muslims stop being mesmerized by worldly developments and stop distancing themselves from the sacred teachings delivered by the Prophet SAW.
